We were perhaps a little too much in our comfort zone towards the end: Mohamed Salah compares Jurgen Klopp's tenure to Arne Slot's time
Liverpool star winger Mohamed Salah, who recently helped the club win their record-equalling 20th Premier League title, compared former manager Jurgen Klopp and current gaffer Arne Slot, saying that at the end of the German's tenure, the players were a little too comfortable but Slot's direct approach jolted them back to life.
'Arne is very direct, he re-established the competitive level, whereas with Jürgen, we were perhaps a little too much in our comfort zone towards the end. Arne and his staff are more open to discussion, to sharing feelings, I think that was important in my performances. And, above all, it led us to success,' Salah said in an interview with France Football, as per ESPN.
The Egyptian, who was Liverpool's player of the season, scoring 28 times in the EPL, said that Slot's approach had initially taken him by surprise.
'I didn't expect us to win so quickly. Who could have predicted that the transition would be successful so quickly? No one, I think. In preseason, Arne came to see me and asked me to be an example for the other players,' he said.
'I told him not to worry because I'm always at my best, not to set an example, but because that's who I am. He told me what he expected of me in the game, with a lot of responsibilities in running, which I liked,' the Egyptian added.
Meanwhile, Salah was voted 'Footballer of the Year' in England by soccer writers for a record-tying third time on Friday, while Arsenal striker Alessia Russo won the women's award.
Salah previously won the award, handed out by the Football Writers' Association, in 2018 and 2022. Arsenal great Thierry Henry is the only other player to have captured it three times.
Salah has the most goals (28) and assists (18) in the Premier League this season and played a key role in Liverpool winning the title for the second time in five years.

The Bellingham name is back at Borussia Dortmund. Jobe Bellingham signed a five-year-deal on Tuesday with the German club where his older brother developed into one of the world's best midfielders before joining Real Madrid in 2023. Just like Jude, Jobe Bellingham is a central midfielder who likes to get forward and support attacks. Jobe has followed in his brother's footsteps by coming through the Birmingham City academy and making his senior debut at the age of 16 in 2022. He's also played for England Under-21s. There are a couple of differences between the Bellinghams, too. Jobe is two years older than Jude was when he signed for Dortmund in 2020, and he also has experience of playing a center-forward role in a handful of games for Sunderland. His performances for Sunderland in the second-division Championship this season saw Bellingham named the league's young player of the year in April and named in its team of the season. Bellingham joins a Dortmund team which narrowly secured Champions League qualification for next season by rising to fourth place on the final day of the Bundesliga. Bellingham is eligible for Dortmund's opening group-stage games this month at the Club World Cup in the United States. He will wear No. 77 at the tournament, Dortmund said. England stunned by Senegal to put Tuchel under immediate pressure
England slumped to a 3-1 home friendly defeat by Senegal on Tuesday to ramp up the scrutiny on boss Thomas Tuchel one year out from the World Cup. Goals from Ismaila Sarr, Habib Diarra and Cheikh Sabaly inflicted England's first ever defeat against African opposition at Nottingham Forest's City Ground after Harry Kane had given the hosts an early lead. Tuchel was scathing in his criticism of his side's dreary display in beating minnows Andorra just 1-0 in World Cup qualifying on Saturday. The German, who was appointed with the task of ending England's wait since 1966 for a major tournament win, has so far failed to spark a star-studded squad into looking like contenders for the World Cup, even if this was his first defeat in four games. Tuchel responded by making 10 changes, with Kane the only player to retain his place. Tennis-Engel claims upset win in first professional match on grass in Stuttgart
June 10 - German teen Justin Engel had never played a professional tennis match on grass but on Tuesday he showed he could be a force to reckon with at the Stuttgart Open when he overcame Australian James Duckworth, who sits 187 rungs above him in the rankings. Engel, ranked 281 in the world, arrived at the tournament having played only five matches on the ATP Tour, with the 17-year-old a regular on the Challenger Tour where he has played on clay and hardcourts. After slowly coming to grips with the green surface, Engel forced a decider but found himself a break down and even needed treatment for dizziness before triumphing 4-6 6-4 7-6 in nearly 2-1/2 hours. When Duckworth's return on match point found the net, the Australian nearly smashed his racket but controlled himself while a relieved Engel sank to the grass in disbelief before throwing his cap into the air in delight. "I'm really proud of myself, it was my first grass match," said Engel, who fired 32 winners past Duckworth. "I know this match was tough and I'm pretty happy with this result. I can't wait to play the next round." American 19-year-old Learner Tien also advanced from his first match on grass but only after his opponent Yoshihito Nishioka retired when Tien had levelled the match at one set apiece. Top seeds Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton and Felix Auger-Aliassime received direct entries into the second round.
