vasovasostomy

The breakthrough surgery was performed on July 9, 2025, by a skilled team led by Dr Aditya Prakash Sharma, Dr Girdhar Bora, both Additional Professors, and Prof Ravi Mohan from the Department of Urology.
This pioneering intervention replaces the traditional microscope-based technique with the precision of robotic surgery, marking a major leap forward in reproductive microsurgery in India.
The patient, a 43-year-old male presenting with secondary infertility following a vasectomy, underwent the procedure using the
da Vinci Surgical System
. He was discharged the very next day, signaling a swift and successful recovery.
Vasovasostomy, commonly known as vasectomy reversal, is a highly intricate microsurgical operation that involves reconnecting the severed ends of the vas deferens to restore the passage of sperm and enable natural conception.
Traditionally dependent on high-powered microscopes, the PGIMER team broke new ground by harnessing robotic assistance - offering three-dimensional magnified visualization, enhanced precision, and superior suturing stability.
"This innovation reflects PGIMER's unwavering commitment to integrating next-generation technology into patient care," said Dr Aditya Prakash Sharma, the lead surgeon.
"Robot-assisted vasovasostomy not only improves accuracy but also reduces surgeon fatigue and eliminates tremor - allowing the use of ultra-fine sutures, even thinner than a strand of human hair. It opens a new horizon for couples desiring natural conception post-vasectomy."

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday disposed of a petition challenging protests by employee unions at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, while reiterating that no union would be allowed to obstruct patient care or disrupt the functioning of the hospital. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry clarified that the unions 'shall not enter the premises of the PGI' in a manner that causes 'obstruction to the movement of the patients or the employees or officers'. The bench was hearing a batch of petitions, including CWP No. 162 of 2024 and CWP No. 24 of 2024, which had challenged protests, strikes and alleged service disruptions at the premier medical institution. '162 is being disposed. 24 is the same,' the bench noted, indicating that both were being considered together. During the hearing, counsel for the Union of India, Additional Solicitor General Satya Pal Jain, informed the court that issues relating to the validity of the central government notifications—central to the dispute—were currently under conciliation proceedings before the labour commissioner (central). The court recorded that the labour commissioner 'is about to decide' the matter and noted that further hearings would depend on the outcome of those proceedings. 'As regards the validity of the notifications… the same will be taken up after the Labour Commissioner submits [a decision], or if it fails to take up the issue, the court will hear it in the month of September,' the bench stated. The dispute stems from strikes by central government hospital employees against recent changes in service conditions, following the lapse of certain central notifications. However, the high court made it clear that any demonstration or protest or strike that affects medical services at PGIMER will not be permitted. The bench added that the challenge to the notification 'shall be taken up after the Labour Commissioner submits [a decision], or if the LC fails to do so, the same shall be taken up in the month of September'. The issue traces back to the expiry of an exemption granted to PGIMER under the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970. Through a 2014 notification, the Ministry of Labour and Employment had prohibited the use of contract labour in sanitation, security, and catering services at PGIMER, acting on the advice of the Central Advisory Contract Labour Board (CACLB). PGIMER, however, subsequently sought and obtained exemptions under Section 31 of the Act. These were conditional upon the institute paying contract workers wages and benefits on par with the lowest-paid regular employees. These exemptions were renewed periodically—in 2018, 2020, and 2023—but the latest exemption expired on January 12, 2024. The institute applied for an extension, citing its continued need for contractual staff. However, the CACLB deferred a decision during its July 2024 meeting, as the matter was pending before the high court. According to minutes of a November 5, 2024, meeting placed on record in court, PGIMER stated it had cleared wage arrears for contract workers in compliance with the exemption conditions up to January 13, 2024. Officials from the ministries of Labour and Health, as well as PGIMER, acknowledged that under Rule 25(2)(v)(a) of the Contract Labour Rules, contract workers performing similar duties must be granted the same wages and working conditions as regular employees. In an interim order dated November 22, 2024, the high court had issued a writ of prohibition, restraining all PGIMER employees—regular or contractual—from striking during the pendency of conciliation proceedings. It had also directed the deputy chief labour commissioner (central), who is presiding over the conciliation process, to endeavour to conclude it within two months. The court further clarified that a strike would not be permitted after the conciliation ends—if adverse to the employees—without explicit permission from the court. With Wednesday's order, the court has formally disposed of petitions relating to the protest and obstruction of medical services. However, the broader question involving the validity of the central notifications remains pending, subject to the outcome of the ongoing conciliation process.

'Project Sarathi', involving the National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers in managing patient influx at the PGIMER, was launched last year. The scheme, conceived by Pankaj Rai, deputy director, Administration, saw the involvement of NSS volunteers, which significantly improved the patient management process at the hospital, easing the burden on the medical staff and providing invaluable support to the patients and their families. As the project continues to evolve, the PGIMER administration has now opened the Project Sarathi for citizens, and not just NSS volunteers, to assist patients and their attendants. The decision is expected to bring much-needed relief to thousands of patients who visit the institute daily. The hospital system is often overwhelming and confusing for patients, especially for those coming from rural areas. With more volunteers guiding them through processes like registration, bill payments, and navigating different departments, the PGIMER aims to ease the patient journey, improve services, and patient care. Rai shared that the decision to open the project to citizens was taken after the institute received an overwhelming response from students, not only NSS volunteers. 'Since July 17, in just 15 days, over 1,000 students have applied to become Sarathi volunteers. We didn't expect this kind of response in such a short time. We are sure we will now have many citizens also come forward to be part of Sarathi,' Rai said. Interestingly, it's not just students who are showing interest; several common citizens have also expressed their desire to volunteer and be a part of this patient-friendly initiative. This prompted the PGIMER to take the next big step, to open Project Sarathi for every willing individual, regardless of their background. 'Service doesn't look at age, profession, or qualifications. If someone genuinely wishes to assist patients at the PGIMER, we welcome them to join us,' Rai added. Started to assist patients and their families in understanding the institute's complex hospital system, Sarathi volunteers guide people from getting their OPD slips to meeting the right doctor. These volunteers are posted in different hospital blocks and help people navigate through processes like registration, billing, report collection, and more. Besides logistical help, volunteers also provide emotional support and often feel lost in the hospital's busy corridors. To strengthen this initiative, the PGIMER has also launched the 'Sarathi Feedback Mobile App' that will enable volunteers to collect real-time feedback from patients and their families after assisting them. The feedback will be sent directly to the institute's administration, helping them understand service gaps and areas that need immediate improvement. Rai emphasised that the feedback app will bring transparency and accountability into the system. 'Our policies and improvements will now be guided by patient feedback. This blend of service and technology will make PGIMER's healthcare delivery more effective and patient-centric,' he said. Anyone, be it students or common citizens, interested in volunteering under Project Sarathi can send an email with their name, institution (if applicable), and contact details to ddapgi@ Once the application is received, PGI will provide orientation and training to ensure the volunteers are well-prepared to guide and assist patients effectively. The PGIMER's School of Public Health recently surveyed this project to analyse the benefits patients are experiencing. The study has revealed that patients visiting the institute for treatment for the first time benefit the most from the project, with 42 per cent of first-time visitors utilising Sarathi services, 30 per cent for the second visit, and 28 per cent of patients and their attendants using Sarathi after two trips. Usually, a new patient seeking treatment takes about four hours from getting the registration card made to going to the OPD and receiving treatment. With the help of Sarathi, new patients take only two hours and a few minutes for this entire process, saving close to 1 hour 50 minutes for each patient.
