Illegal HT cotton seeds make deep inroads into agriculture markets, hits legal traders

Time of India10-06-2025
Nagpur: The prohibited herbicide-tolerant (HT) seeds — genetically engineered to survive toxic weed killers — have made deep inroads into the market, and it may end up leaving a major dent in the legal trade of BG2 cotton seeds this sowing season, say dealers in agricultural inputs.

Farmers are buying the HT seed at nearly double the price at which the legitimate BG2 cotton is available, said sources. Farmers told TOI that HT seeds are being sold for as much as Rs1,200 to 1,500 a packet, whereas the permitted BG2 seeds are being sold for Rs850. Rates of the latter are fixed by the govt.
CD Mayee, former director of Central Institute of Cotton Research, said at least 30% of the area under cotton is expected to have HT cotton.
HT seeds were developed by multinational agriculture giant Monsanto in alliance with the Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company (Mahyco). It has an additional gene that can survive even if weed-killers (herbicides) are used. It does away with the need for manually clearing farms of weeds before and after sowing. Just spraying glyphosate-based herbicide helps, as the weeds are killed and the HT cotton survives. The BG2 cotton is only resistant to the bollworm pest.
However, the variety could not get formal approval from the govt as the trials were stopped midway by the Mahyco-Monsanto combine. Yet, as the seeds were pilfered, Gujarat emerged as the hub for illegal cultivation, said sources.
Pankaj Bothra, a dealer in Yavatmal, said traders have to book their quota of cotton seeds by paying in advance. There are chances that many may not be able to even recover their costs due to the rampant sale of HT seeds.

There are chances that some may even ask for a refund from seed companies due to substantial stock remaining unsold.
Sharad Chandak of Nagpur Agro Dealers Association also acknowledged that HT seeds are hitting their business. Farmers are preferring the HT seeds, which the peddlers claim have dual protection covering both pests and herbicides. In fact, the grey market dealers start operations much before the official sales are allowed.
The govt does not allow the sale of cotton seeds before June 15, a source said.
Sources said the packets are transported in passenger buses from Gujarat, with dealers bringing small quantities to avoid detection. In a recent trend, loose seeds are brought to Vidarbha and then packed by local agents. So far, the agriculture department has seized 1,800 packets and over 1.7 tonnes of loose HT seeds in Nagpur division. Farmers say this is just the tip of the iceberg.
The real action must happen in Gujarat — where the source lies.
Meanwhile, even as BG2 seeds sales are down, dealers are also stocking glyphosate-based weed killers anticipating demand due to the HT seeds. Legally, glyphosate cannot be used in cropped areas but it is easily available in stores, said sources.

Festive rush chokes market areas as illegal parking and thin policing cripple traffic

1 2 Nagpur: Mahal and Itwari, the city's traditional commercial hubs, have turned into sprawling parking stretches this festive season as thousands throng their congested lanes. The heavy festive rush, coupled with illegal parking and a thin traffic police presence, has pushed these areas to the brink of gridlock. Over the past week, thousands of shoppers from across the city have thronged the markets, stretching from Chitnis Square to Ram Cooler Square, then Zenda Chowk, Badkas Square, and deep into the internal lanes of Mahal and Itwari. While major landmarks like Badkas Square occasionally see a police traffic marshal, key junctions remain unmanned for most of the day, leaving vehicles, handcarts, and pedestrians to jostle for space. Residents in such market areas say the festive chaos has effectively confined them to their homes. "In the evenings, we can't even step out for milk. There's no space to walk, and if you try to take your two-wheeler out, you're stuck for half-an-hour before even reaching the main road," said Shyam Pathekar, a 62-year-old resident of Mahal. A shop owner at Badkas Chowk said, "Only when VVIPs are visiting the area, you can see police presence there. The moment they are gone, the situation is back to normal. Leave normal days, even on festive days you can hardly spot a cop at Badkas Chowk, which is a key junction." Ironically, the Mahal–Itwari belt saw road widening and footpath development over the past two years to accommodate both vehicular and pedestrian movement. But with enforcement lagging, the extra carriageway has simply become more parking space and a dais for hawkers. Shopkeepers admit that festive-season deliveries and aggressive discount sales have drawn unprecedented crowds, but many blame the absence of continuous traffic monitoring. The festive traffic surge is expected to last another fortnight. However, several residents say they have seen no sign of increased manpower. "We hear about special drives against illegal parking, but on the ground, nothing changes. By the time a tow truck comes, people have already parked and gone shopping," said Chandrashekhar Deshpande, a commuter who spent 30 minutes covering less than a kilometre. A senior police official from the cotton market zone told TOI that currently, 32 personnel are deployed on the ground. Due to the festive season of Ganpati, an additional 60-70 personnel are being brought in from other zones for bandobast. He added that the local staff strength is lower than usual due to the festivities. "We plan our deployment accordingly so we have at least 100 cops on duty," he said. With festival shopping set to peak, traffic police face mounting calls to post additional personnel at key chokepoints, impose stricter towing action, and coordinate with the civic body on vendor regulation. Until then, for shoppers and residents alike, the Mahal–Itwari belt will remain a test of patience — and a lesson in how quickly widened roads can be swallowed by festive chaos. Dharashiv double-murder accused father-son duo arrested from Pune

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Within 24 hours of a farmer couple being murdered in public in Dharashiv on Wednesday morning, the local crime branch apprehended the accused father-son duo in the early hours of Thursday from Janta Vasahat in Pune city. The preliminary investigation revealed the deceased farmer couple — 37-year-old Sahdev Pawar and his wife, Priyanka (28) — and the accused — Hariba Chavan (50) and his son, Jeevan (30) — were friends who became adversaries. Police said the victims and the accused had their farms and homes situated adjacent to each other, and the families had always maintained a good rapport. Local crime branch inspector Vinod Ijjapwar said shortly after the murder, the accused duo left their car at the scene and, riding a bike, reached their close relative's house in Pune. "After being arrested, the accused said they feared Sahdev might murder them, so they decided to eliminate him before he could strike," Ijjapwar said. An FIR against the accused men was registered at the Bembli police station based on a complaint lodged by Priyanka's father. According to police records, in July 2022, the friendship between Sahdev and Jeevan turned sour after Jeevan drove a tractor over Sahdev's soybean crop. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo A violent fight broke out. Sahdev chopped Jeevan's thumb and also attempted to run him over with a tractor. Following the incident, Sahdev surrendered to the police and was arrested on attempted murder charges. The case went to trial, and he was convicted. Over a month ago, he obtained bail and returned home. To avoid friction with the Chavans, he, along with his wife and two minor daughters, started staying at his father-in-law Subhash Salunke's house in Dhanori village of Lohara tehsil. On Monday, Sahdev, along with his wife and children, returned to the farm to spray fertilisers on the sugar cane crop and stayed back. On Wednesday, around 11.30 am, while the Pawars were riding their bike from Karajkheda Chowk towards Lohara, the Chavan father and son duo approached them from behind and rammed the bike. The Pawar couple was seriously injured. The accused also lost control of their vehicle, which landed in the roadside ditch. Carrying a sharp-edged sickle, the accused began attacking Sahdev and even chopped his fingers. They did not spare the injured Priyanka and attacked her as well. Eyewitnesses told the police that the victims' bodies remained on the road for over an hour before they were lifted and taken to the hospital, where they were declared dead. It's official: E-W Metro's Sealdah-Esp stretch finally set to open next Fri

Kolkata: It's official. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate East-West Metro's last 2.6km leg and two other metro lines next Friday. TOI has been reporting on the anticipated launch of the last 2.6 km Esplanade-Sealdah stretch of the East-West Metro or Green Line, the first 7 km Noapara-Airport section of the Yellow Line, and Phase II of the Orange Line (4.4 km Ruby-Metropolitan) since Aug 6. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Finally, on Thursday, Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the information with the BJP functionaries in Bengal. Extending an invitation to Sukanta Majumdar, Union minister of state for education and development of the northeastern region, the railway minister wrote: "Hon'ble Prime Minister will inaugurate the Sealdah-Esplanade Metro section, Beleghata (as the station at Metropolitan is called)-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (the station at EM Bypass' Ruby crossing) and Noapara-Jai Hind (airport Metro station), the subway at Howrah metro station and flag off trains in these sections on 22 Aug 2025." The letter was forwarded to the media by Majumdar, who also wrote on X: "This is a historic gift for West Bengal before Durga Puja." "At last, the city's biggest infrastructure project will finally run its full 16.6 km length, connecting Sector V on the east and Howrah Maidan on the west of the Hooghly," an engineer of KMRC, the implementing agency of the Rs 10,000 crore project, said. Apart from the East-West Metro, the commissioning of the Noapara-Airport or the Yellow Line will be very significant for the transportation sector as Kolkata will get its first metro-airport connectivity. The Noapara station is a part of the 32 km North-South Metro or Blue Line, which also has an interface with the East-West Metro at Esplanade. Flyers from Howrah, Kolkata, and the southern and northern suburbs will now have the option of availing Metro services to board an aircraft. The 9.2 km Sector V-Sealdah section could not continue to Esplanade since the authorities had to skip the in-between 2.6 km Esplanade-Sealdah stretch, which suffered several setbacks because it passes through the subsidence-ridden Bowbazar area.
