Kolkata: It's official. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate East-West Metro's last 2.6km leg and two other metro lines next Friday.
TOI has been reporting on the anticipated launch of the last 2.6 km Esplanade-Sealdah stretch of the East-West Metro or Green Line, the first 7 km Noapara-Airport section of the Yellow Line, and Phase II of the Orange Line (4.4 km Ruby-Metropolitan) since Aug 6.

Finally, on Thursday, Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the information with the BJP functionaries in Bengal. Extending an invitation to Sukanta Majumdar, Union minister of state for education and development of the northeastern region, the railway minister wrote: "Hon'ble Prime Minister will inaugurate the Sealdah-Esplanade Metro section, Beleghata (as the station at Metropolitan is called)-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (the station at EM Bypass' Ruby crossing) and Noapara-Jai Hind (airport Metro station), the subway at Howrah metro station and flag off trains in these sections on 22 Aug 2025."
The letter was forwarded to the media by Majumdar, who also wrote on X: "This is a historic gift for West Bengal before Durga Puja."
"At last, the city's biggest infrastructure project will finally run its full 16.6 km length, connecting Sector V on the east and Howrah Maidan on the west of the Hooghly," an engineer of KMRC, the implementing agency of the Rs 10,000 crore project, said.
Apart from the East-West Metro, the commissioning of the Noapara-Airport or the Yellow Line will be very significant for the transportation sector as Kolkata will get its first metro-airport connectivity.
The Noapara station is a part of the 32 km North-South Metro or Blue Line, which also has an interface with the East-West Metro at Esplanade. Flyers from Howrah, Kolkata, and the southern and northern suburbs will now have the option of availing Metro services to board an aircraft.
The 9.2 km Sector V-Sealdah section could not continue to Esplanade since the authorities had to skip the in-between 2.6 km Esplanade-Sealdah stretch, which suffered several setbacks because it passes through the subsidence-ridden Bowbazar area.

The inauguration function will be held at the Jessore Road metro station of the Yellow Line in the northern suburbs of the city The Esplanade-Sealdah Metro section will finally complete the East-West Metro line, linking it to the existing Howrah Maidan-Esplanade and Sector V-Sealdah stretches. The new 4.39-kilometre extended stretch of the Orange Line from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay to Beleghata will serve four new stations, improving access for residents in areas like VIP Bazar, Ritwik Ghatak (Topsia), Barun Sengupta (Science City), and Beleghata. Guv: Spike in discrimination, drugs, crime; DMK hits back

Chennai: A fresh bout of verbal sparring broke out between Raj Bhavan and DMK govt in TN, as Governor R N Ravi alleged state was grappling with "very serious challenges" including a spike in sexual offences and rising drug abuse, which drew a sharp rebuttal from the ruling party. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On the eve of Independence Day, Ravi said about 60% of TN youth study in govt-run schools and are mostly from poor and marginalized sections. "The standards of teaching and learning are sharply declining in these schools," he said. Citing the ASER (annual status of education report), he said more than 50% of high school students cannot do simple maths or read primary standards textbooks. "Public education in TN is in steady decline," he said. Students are merely passing with certificates, and without job opportunities, he said. Alleging that social and educational discrimination was on the rise, Ravi said dalits are physically assaulted and at times even killed for their attempt to share the common public space. "It is a matter of collective shame that even after 78 years of Independence, rampant humiliating social discrimination practices are prevalent in our state," he said. Ravi said according to national crime records bureau, about 20,000 suicides are reported from TN every year, more than double the national average. The suicides reflect the prevailing acute social, psychological, or economic distress in the society, he said. Ravi alleged that drug abuse, especially among youth, was sharply increasing, particularly synthetic drugs. He also alleged that there was a sharp increase in the incidents of sexual offences, especially Pocso cases. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "According to official data, there has been more than 56% increase in Pocso rape cases in 2024,'' he said. Rejecting Ravi's charges, municipal administration minister K N Nehru said data released by Union govt shows TN was ahead in social and economic parameters. He said TN govt has responded to these charges with data in the past. "The governor is lying, frustrated over the boycott of his Independence day tea party by DMK allies," he said. Nehru also dismissed the statement that Centre has been supporting the development of TN by providing 'substantial funding', which included 3lakh crore as grants-in-aid. "The last Union budget had no mention of TN," he said. School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said if Ravi was concerned about education of children in TN, he should urge Union govt to release pending funds for school education department.

J&K: Pilgrims were having lunch when cloudburst struck Kishtwar district; 2 CISF personnel among victims

JAMMU/SRINAGAR: Many victims of Thursday's flash floods in J&K's Kishtwar district were having lunch at a pilgrim camp when a cloudburst struck the area between noon and 1pm, causing rapidly filling rivulets to swamp a swathe of the valley. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The camp set up for pilgrims bore the brunt of the damage, leaving a mud-filled gorge where the langar stood. Floodwaters washed away several other structures, including a security post. Dozens of vehicles were damaged. "Two CISF personnel were among the victims. Many of the pilgrims who died were having food in the langar when disaster struck," an official said. Chishoti is about 90km from Kishtwar and the last stop before pilgrims trek 8.5km to the ancient Machail Mata shrine. The 43-day Shri Machail Mata Yatra, which commenced on July 25 and was to continue till September 5, has been suspended. At Paddar, the town closest to the disaster zone, leader of the opposition Sunil Sharma told reporters that 100-odd people were missing. "There are mud-caked bodies and critically injured people all around. The death toll could rise," he said. "I just spoke to the Union home minister @AmitShah to brief him about the developing situation in Kishtwar region of Jammu," CM Omar Abdullah wrote on X, also announcing the cancellation of his scheduled "At Home" tea party on Independence Day. "My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the cloudburst and flooding in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir. The situation is being monitored closely. Rescue and relief operations are underway. Every possible assistance will be provided to those in need," PM Narendra Modi wrote on X. IGP (Jammu zone) Bhimsen Tuti said the administration had "activated" control rooms and help desks across Kishtwar to provide updates about the rescue efforts.
