Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate three new Metro stations in Kolkata on August 22, which will boost urban connectivity in the city.
'PM Modi will inaugurate the Sealdah-Esplanade section of the Green Line, Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing)-Beleghata section of the Orange Line, and Noapara-Jai Hind (airport) section of the Yellow Line,' Union minister Sukanta Majumdar Thursday posted on X.
The inauguration function will be held at the Jessore Road metro station of the Yellow Line in the northern suburbs of the city
The Esplanade-Sealdah Metro section will finally complete the East-West Metro line, linking it to the existing Howrah Maidan-Esplanade and Sector V-Sealdah stretches. The new 4.39-kilometre extended stretch of the Orange Line from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay to Beleghata will serve four new stations, improving access for residents in areas like VIP Bazar, Ritwik Ghatak (Topsia), Barun Sengupta (Science City), and Beleghata.
The Noapara-Jai Hind (Biman Bandar) section will introduce four new stations — Noapara, Dum Dum Cantonment, Jessore Road, and Jai Hind Bimanbandar—with a mix of elevated and underground tracks, providing a direct metro link to the airport.
At present, works of Rs 83,765 crore are in progress in the state, and a record allocation of Rs 13,955 crore was made this fiscal year. A total of 101 stations are being redeveloped, and the state's rail network is already benefiting from nine Vande Bharat and two Amrit Bharat trains, Railways Minister said. — With PTI

ED raids across two cities over reopened case against Tamil Nadu minister, DMK says bid to deflect from ‘vote chori'

Officers from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched simultaneous searches on Saturday at the properties of Tamil Nadu Rural Development Minister I Periyasamy, his family members, and linked premises in Dindigul and Chennai, reviving a years-old disproportionate assets case that had been dismissed but was recently reopened by the Madras High Court. About a dozen ED officials, split into three teams and backed by armed Central Reserve Police Force personnel, arrived at three residential locations in Dindigul — Durairaj Nagar, Vallalar Nagar, and Seelapadi — around 7:30 am. Local DMK cadre quickly gathered near the sites as police tightened security. The searches targeted the minister's home, as well as that of his son and Dindigul East MLA I P Senthil Kumar and his daughter Indra. In Chennai, ED teams conducted searches at Periyasamy's official bungalow on Greenways Road under heavy Central Armed Police Force protection. Officers also visited the MLAs' hostel at the Government Omandurar Estate. Periyasamy, a senior leader of the ruling DMK, his wife Suseela, and sons Senthil Kumar and Prabhu had been acquitted by a Dindigul trial court in a Rs 2.01 crore disproportionate assets case dating back to 2006–2010. The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption alleged that the family had amassed assets in excess of their known income during his earlier tenure as minister. The acquittal was overturned in April by Justice P Velmurugan of the Madras High Court, who ordered a fresh trial. The family has appealed in the Supreme Court, with a hearing scheduled for August 18. The DMK responded sharply, framing the raids as politically motivated and timed to distract from what the party called the BJP's own electoral misconduct. 'This is an attempt to divert attention from vote chori (theft),' said DMK organisation secretary R S Bharathi, invoking a phrase used by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to describe alleged fraud. In a formal statement, Bharathi said: 'The BJP stands exposed for indulging in electoral fraud by using the Election Commission. The country is shocked over this. To divert attention from the illegal vote chori, the Enforcement Directorate is conducting searches at premises linked to Periyasamy.' Bharathi said the DMK 'would neither fear the ED nor Modi,' and accused the BJP of weaponising state institutions: 'The BJP was using empowered and autonomous bodies as its election instruments.' While the ED has not disclosed the specific trigger for Saturday's searches, the revival of the disproportionate assets case has heightened political tensions as Periyasamy remains an influential figure in the DMK. The outcome of the Supreme Court hearing next week could determine whether the disproportionate assets case proceeds to trial again.

Lakhs gather at Nemra for Shibu Soren's Sanskar Bhoj; leaders across India pay tribute to Dishom Guru

RANCHI: Tributes poured in for 'Dishom Guru' Shibu Soren on his Sanskar Bhoj at his native place in Nemra on Saturday. From senior political figures and government officials to social representatives and local villagers, a vast gathering assembled to honour the memory of the revered leader, popularly known as 'Dishom Guru.' Dignitaries from all over the country participated in the Sanskar Bhoj. Apart from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Telangana CM Revanth Reddy, Baba Ramdev, Pappu Yadav and several others visited Nemra. Governor Santosh Gangwar also offered floral tributes at Soren's portrait and joined the Sanskar Bhoj. He later met Chief Minister Hemant Soren and family members to express his condolences. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recalled that Shibu Soren's simplicity and personality had always impressed him. 'I had several meetings with Dishom Guru, Shibu Soren. His spontaneity, simplicity and personality always impressed me. Guruji was known not only as the guardian of tribals but also of other communities. I offer my humble tribute to him,' said Rajnath Singh after paying homage. Given the massive turnout, extensive arrangements were made for more than one lakh people visiting Nemra. Huge cutouts of late Shibu Soren were installed on both sides of the road. Around 4,000 street lights and over 200 generators were arranged to deal with any power failure. Five big pandals were raised at different places for the Sanskar Bhoj, each carrying Soren's picture where people paid their respects. More than 300 e-rickshaws operated between designated parking zones and the event venue. Resting areas and dedicated footpaths were set up for visitors' convenience.

Now, 100-metre FOB Connects Mumbai Metro 3 with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 2

Mumbai: Catching a flight from Terminal 2 just got easier. A newly constructed 100-metre Foot Over Bridge (FOB) now links the CSMIA–T2 Metro Station on Line 3 directly to the airport terminal, allowing passengers to skip road traffic and walk straight from the Metro to the check-in counters. Built 23 metres above ground with strong structural steel, the bridge connects Lift Entry/Exit A1 of the Metro station at ground level directly into the terminal building. The 4.3-metre-wide and 3-metre-high structure sits above the ongoing Metro Line 7A station works, ensuring faster, safer, and seamless transfer for air travellers. "100-metre-long FOB to CSMIAirport T2 from underground Metro 3 station is opened. This facilitates much-needed last-mile connectivity to Mumbai Airport from the Metro station. Thank you MMRDA for providing the FOB on our request," said Ashwini Bhide, Managing Director, MMRCL. Passengers no longer need to negotiate busy road crossings, and those carrying luggage will find the connection much easier. The spokesperson added that the construction posed significant challenges as the bridge had to be built high above the ongoing underground Metro works. On July 28, senior officials from the BMC, MMRCL, MMRDA, and Indian Railways met at the civic headquarters to discuss ways of improving last-mile connectivity. The discussions centred on integrating pedestrian infrastructure with the city's expanding underground transit system. One of the first integration projects in the pipeline is a 1-km pedestrian subway linking Acharya Atre Chowk Metro station to the Mahalaxmi Racecourse and the Coastal Road's parking facility at Haji Ali. A 160-metre arm is also planned to connect to nearby open spaces. BMC and MMRCL have already been working on the alignment since June. A senior official added that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared in the next four months, with the vision of connecting high-density commercial hubs within a 500-m to 1-km radius. Equipped with escalators and elevators, these will be accessible for all commuters. Metro Line 3, also called the Aqua Line, is Mumbai's first fully underground Metro corridor.
