Allow FYJC aspirants to edit college choices: Principals after court stay
Mumbai: The school education department may have to allow students from socially and economically backward classes to change their preferences on the FYJC admission portal following Bombay high court's stay on the controversial clause in the May 6 govt resolution (GR) that introduced social reservations in the 50% non-minority seats in minority institutions, said principals of city colleges.
This, they added, may delay the admission process further.
While department officials said that necessary steps will be taken for the welfare of students, no decision was made on providing the editing option on the portal until Thursday night.
Many students belonging to the socially and economically backward classes would have chosen minority institutions on the admission portal, said a principal. "There is a possibility that all their 10 choices are for minority institutions or even if they selected two or three, their order of preferences will be affected.
Now, with the HC decision, these students will have to be given a fair chance to edit their options and to apply to the same colleges under the open category too, based on their merit.
Or maybe to choose other colleges too. If they are not allowed to change now, there could be confusion after the allotment," added the principal. The allotment list for the first round is set to be released on June 26.
Another principal pointed out that govt did not issue clear guidelines prior to the commencement of admissions.
"The May 6 GR talks only about admissions to vacant minority seats. There was no application of mind behind bringing such a regulation. If govt was clear about its intention, institutions would have moved court before. Now, we just hope the change does not impact the admission schedule much," said the principal, pointing out that SSC results were out over a month ago.
A govt official confirmed that no decision has been made yet.
"We will study the HC order copy and then take appropriate action for the larger benefit of students. We will make necessary changes, if needed," said the official, adding that this is the first time that students have access to thousands of colleges across the state by just filling one form for Rs 100.
Meanwhile, admissions to in-house, minority, and management quotas commenced Thursday. Of the over 1.1 lakh students who applied under these quotas, 9,087 have secured admissions.

Co says can't give 50 iPads in 1 wk, govt cancels order
Mumbai: The state govt on Friday cancelled the work order to buy 50 iPads for ministers and select officials after the supplier said the devices cannot be delivered at short notice. Govt had in April decided to provide iPads for Rs 1.6 crore for implementation of its e-cabinet system. On June 4, it issued the work order, asking the supplier—Radius Systems Pvt Ltd—to deliver 50 iPads within a week. Officials said that the company emailed the general administration department two days later, expressing its inability make the delivery on time, prompting govt to cancel its order. RTI activist Vijay Kumbhar questioned how the firm was selected when it can't even fulfil such a small order. "The contractor says delivering 50-60 iPads in a week is not possible! Does that make sense to you?" he posted on X. "Tenders were even invited. At that very moment, I had raised a question. For ministers who don't even have official email IDs, what exactly is the use of an iPad? A toy? Who found a contractor who can't even supply 50-60 iPads? How was his tender approved? College teachers await 7th pay panelimplementation
Ludhiana: The 7th pay commission is yet to be implemented in aided colleges, despite Punjab govt promising to do so three years ago. The govt has been making tall claims about bringing about a revolution in education, but nothing has been done about higher education, members of Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) have alleged. Varun Goel of the Union recently said though the Centre is considering bringing about the 8th pay commission, Punjab govt is yet to implement even the 7th pay. JPSC to pay Rs 1L to candidate in recruitment case
Ranchi: Jharkhand high court on Friday imposed a cost of Rs 1 lakh on the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC), while dismissing an appeal filed by the latter against a candidate. The division bench headed by Chief Justice MS Ramachandra Rao while dismissing the appeal upheld the order of a single judge and imposed the cost of Rs 1 lakh on the Commission which is to be paid to the petitioner, Manoj Kumar Kachhap, in eight weeks. Kachhap had filed a petition before the single bench of the HC stating that he was a candidate and had applied for the post of assistant professor in 2018. He appeared for the exams after scrutiny of his documents by the commission. But at the time of interview, he was told that the fees deposited for the exam was not credited in JPSC's account and therefore his candidature could not be considered. Kachhap told the court that he wasn't informed about it before the interview. In another matter, the high court imposed a cost of Rs 8,000 on former chief minister Madhu Koda for seeking adjournment in a case for the fourth time.
