said the former Supreme Court judge was a jurist of integrity and champion of social justice and civil liberties.

"As someone who can create space for constructive debates in Parliament, conduct the House giving rightful place to the voice of the opposition, and as a democrat who has faith in the Constitution and in the principles of federalism, pluralism, social justice, and linguistic rights Sudershan Reddy stands," Stalin posted on social media on Tuesday. "I wholeheartedly congratulate B Sudershan Reddy. A jurist of integrity, independence, and a champion of civil liberties and social justice, he has upheld constitutional values throughout his career," he said.
Stalin's congratulatory message came hours after Sudershan Reddy was announced as VP candidate of INDIA bloc, putting to rest speculation that a candidate may be fielded from TN to counter BJP's choice of C P Radhakrishnan from the southern state.
"At a time when our institutions are under strain, his candidature strengthens our collective resolve to safeguard democracy and protect the spirit of the Constitution," Stalin added.
Stalin alleged that all the independent institutions that were meant to safeguard Indian democracy have been turned into subsidiary bodies of BJP, and the Constitution itself was in danger. "In such a situation, the responsibility before us is to support one who believes in India's fundamental ideals of secularism, federalism, social justice, and unity in diversity," he said. He also alleged that Union govt was "continuously inflicting injustice on TN".

"As the opposite of anti-federalism, authoritarianism, and the trend of spreading hatred Sudershan Reddy stands," he said.
Stalin's statement is also seen as a response to BJP leaders who have been urging DMK to back CPR, as he was from TN. On Tuesday too, BJP leaders Tamilisai Soundararajan, Vanathi Srinivasan and H Raja urged DMK to support CPR.
Stalin also held a meeting on the VP election, with leaders of DMK's alliance partners including VCK's Thol Thirumavalavan, MDMK's Vaiko, MNM's Kamal Haasan and the left leaders on Tuesday at his residence.
Meanwhile, DMK's Parliamentary party leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi said on Tuesday that the party will not support the NDA candidate C P Radhakrishnan merely because he hails from TN. "We must look beyond it. It is a battle of two opposite ideologies. We are opposing a candidate who comes from the RSS background and supports the divisive politics of BJP. We can't confine this battle to any one state. All the opposition parties have united and took the decision based on consensus before announcing the candidate," Kanimozhi told reporters in New Delhi.

'Laundromat for Russia': Donald Trump aide targets India amid US tariff threats

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro has levelled fresh charges against India over its purchase of oil from Russia, alleging the country is a 'laundromat for the Kremlin'. Navarro's attack comes days after he termed India the "Maharaja of tariffs" as he backed US President Donald Trump's doubling of duties on Indian goods entering the country. Peter Navarro, White House senior counselor for trade and manufacturing, speaks to members of the media outside the White House.(Bloomberg) In a media interaction, Navarro asserted that India's oil purchase from Russia was virtually close to nothing before Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. "The argument now, when this percentage has gone up to 30-35%, that somehow they need Russian oil, is nonsense...," the Trump aide could be heard saying in a clip shared by C-Span. "India doesn't appear to want to recognise its role in the bloodshed... It's cosying up to Xi Jinping (Chinese President). They (India) don't need the (Russian) oil," he said. Backing the same argument, Navarro later said that India's oil trade with Russia is "a refining profiteering scheme. It's a laundromat for the Kremlin." However, the White House official further added: 'I love India. Modi is a great leader, but please, India, look at your role in the global economy. What you're doing right now is not creating peace. It's perpetuating the war.' Navarro's remarks come days ahead of Trump's 50% tariff deadline for India. Last month, Trump announced 25% tariffs on Indian imports, which he later threatened to double to 50%. While one half of these duties came into force earlier this month, the remaining would take effect on August 27. "In India, 25% tariffs were put in place because they cheat us on trade. Then 25% because of the Russian oil... They have higher tariffs, Maharaja tariffs...," Navarro said, adding that there's a massive trade deficit between India and the US which hurts American businesses. Navarro said that India pays the money it gets from doing business with the US, to Russia, for buying their oil, "which then is processed by refiners, and they make a bunch of money there, but then the Russians use the money to build more arms and kill Ukrainians." The White House official then asserted how the American taxpayer money goes into providing more military aid to Ukraine, adding "that's insane, and President Trump sees that chessboard beautifully... In many ways, the road to peace runs through New Delhi...". This is not the first time the White House official has targeted India over Russian trade. In an opinion piece for the Financial Times a few days ago, Navarro termed India's oil trade with Russia 'opportunistic' and 'corrosive' to global efforts being made to isolate the Russian economy. 'As Russia continues to hammer Ukraine, helped by India's financial support, American (and European) taxpayers are then forced to spend tens of billions more to help Ukraine's defence. Meanwhile, India keeps slamming the door on American exports through high tariffs and trade barriers. More than 300,000 soldiers and civilians have been killed, while Nato's eastern flank grows more exposed and the west foots the bill for India's oil laundering,' wrote Navarro. Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who is visiting Moscow, lashed out at the tariffs threatened by the US and said that India was "perplexed" at the rationale behind the move. 'We are not the biggest purchasers of Russian oil, that is China. We are not the biggest purchasers of LNG, that is the European Union. We are not the country which has the biggest trade surge with Russia after 2022; I think there are some countries to the south,' he said. Trade ties between India and the US have been seeing some tensions ever since Donald Trump's tariff tirade last month. While it has targeted India time and again for its oil trade with Russia, it has not imposed any sanctions on China yet.

When BJP's UP allies gathered in Delhi, minus BJP: Why an NDA meeting is turning heads

A gathering of the BJP's backward class allies from Uttar Pradesh in Delhi, in which prominent leaders of the ruling party were absent, has the political circles abuzz. Calling themselves the 'actual PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) platform', the four parties representing the Other Backward Class (OBC) communities of Jats, Rajbhars, Nishads, and Patels in Delhi's Talkatora stadium on Wednesday drew the attention of both the BJP and the Opposition. While Union Health Minister J P Nadda, the BJP president, and other senior party leaders were invited but could not turn up, eyebrows were raised about the absence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other senior UP BJP leaders. Scotching any rumours, NISHAD Party leaders said this was due to the event — the 10th anniversary of their party's foundation — being held in Delhi. However, NISHAD Party leader and state minister Sanjay Nishad's call to gherao the UP Assembly if these communities' demand for reservation were not met with attention. 'There is a narrative of PDA going on in UP, but this stage was the actual platform for the unity of the PDA leadership. When the pain felt by all is the same, then can't the stage be the same?' Sanjay Nishad told The Indian Express. Emphasising the need for OBCs to unite on a common platform, Nishad said political history had shown these communities become powerful when they come together. At the event, Nishad said the gathering had proved the Nishad community would not 'compromise on its rights and entitlements under any circumstances'. 'If our people can come to Delhi, they can also march to surround the Assembly in Lucknow. We must fulfil the dreams of our ancestors and secure a strong future for our coming generations,' he said. His fellow UP Minister and Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) leader Om Prakash Rajbhar took a dig at Opposition parties that claim to represent OBC interests. The PDA is a formulation popularised by the Samajwadi Party (SP) in its pivot to expand beyond its traditional Muslim-Yadav core base. 'The so-called PDA leaders have only exploited the backward and Scheduled Castes, including Nishads, Kevats, Mallahs, Binds, Kashyaps, Bhars, Rajbhars, Patels, Kurmis, and Jats. For 70 years, the Congress and for 19 years, the SP and the Bahujan Samaj Party discriminated against our castes like flies in milk. But today, the red flag of the Nishad Party waving in Delhi indicates that if our community is denied its rights, then not just Delhi, but the Assembly in Lucknow too will be surrounded,' said Rajbhar, backing Nishad's gherao call. The Rajbhar community is the primary base of the SBSP. 'We are all part of NDA. We were invited by Sanjay Nishad ji and it is true that it became a stage for all the backwards fighting for social justice to be united on the same platform. It is too early to say much,' said a senior Apna Dal (Soneylal) leader. In recent months, the Apna Dal (S), whose leader Anupriya Patel is a Union Minister, has looked to expand beyond its Kurmi vote base and reach out to other backward classes to be in a position to go solo in the 2027 Assembly elections, if needed, or at the very least gain more leverage while bargaining with the BJP. Apna Dal (S) leader Ashish Patel, Anupriya's husband, said the key to power lay with the four parties on the stage. 'Today, the real PDA is present on this stage — RLD (Rashtriya Lok Dal), SBSP, Nishad Party, and Apna Dal (S). The key to power lies with these four parties.' The Jayant Chaudhary-led RLD, which recently saw a state minister from the BJP, Chaudhary Laxmi Narayan, launch a broadside against it, sent its MLA Chandan Chauhan to Talkatora. However, it refused to comment on the BJP's absence from the event. 'We are all allies of NDA. There was an invitation from the Nishad Party and we all participated in it. The BJP leadership may not have been able to attend, but the fact remains that our unity will further strengthen the NDA alliance and that is what all of us aim for,' RLD national general secretary Anil Dubey told The Indian Express. UP BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi said there were no differences between his party and its allies. 'There is neither any 'matbhed' nor any 'manbhed' (differences of opinion) among the allies. They had invited national leadership because decision regarding allies is taken by the central leadership and it is clear they could not attend because of the V-P polls. The allies and the alliance are very much intact,' he said. SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said, 'Everyone knows that there is only one true leader of PDA in the country and that is Akhikesh Yadav. Whatever happened in Delhi was all sponsored by the BJP as they are afraid of our PDA narrative and are trying to divert attention through their allies. But the public will see through their tactics.'

‘Maharaj' in tariffs: Trump's Trade Adviser Navarro criticises India over Russian oil

India is a 'Maharaj' in tariffs and it is running a 'profiteering scheme' by using discounted Russian crude oil, White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro has said, in yet another sharp criticism of New Delhi. Mr. Navarro's comments came on a day External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar responded to criticism of India by American officials for its energy ties with Russia and said the U.S. itself had asked New Delhi to help stabilise global energy markets by buying Russian oil. The White House Trade Adviser also talked about how India is 'cosying up to' Chinese President Xi Jinping. The relations between New Delhi and Washington are on a downturn after U.S. President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to a whopping 50%, including 25% additional duties for India's purchase of Russian crude oil. 'Prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, India virtually bought no Russian oil... It was like almost one per cent of their need. The percentage has now gone up to 35%,' Mr. Navarro told reporters in the U.S. Mr. Navarro's fresh attack on India came three days after he wrote a piece in the Financial Times slamming the country for its procurement of Russian crude oil. He said the argument that India needs Russian oil to meet its energy requirements does not make any sense. 'They get cheap Russian oil and make refined products which they sell at premium prices in Europe, Africa and Asia,' he said, adding 'it is purely profiteering by the Indian refining industry.' 'What is the net impact on Americans because of our trade with India? They are Maharaj in tariff. (We have) higher non-tariff barriers, massive trade deficit etc — and that hurts American workers and American businesses,' he said. 'The money they get from us, they use it to buy Russian oil, which then is processed by their refiners,' he said. 'The Russians use the money to build arms and kill Ukrainians and American tax-payers have to provide more aid and military hardware to Ukrainians. That's insane,' he added. 'India does not want to recognise its role in the bloodshed,' he said, adding India is running a 'profiteering' scheme. Though the U.S. imposed an additional 25% tariff on India for its energy ties with Russia, it has not initiated similar actions against China, the largest buyer of Russian crude oil. Defending its purchase of Russian crude oil, India has been maintaining that its energy procurement is driven by national interest and market dynamics. Also read: India's purchase of Russian crude funding war in Ukraine, has to stop: U.S. trade adviser Navarro India turned to purchasing Russian oil sold at a discount after Western countries imposed sanctions on Moscow and shunned its supplies over its invasion of Ukraine in February, 2022. Consequently, from a mere 1.7% share in total oil imports in 2019-20, Russia's share increased to 35.1% in 2024-25, and it is now the biggest oil supplier to India.
