Thane-based firm dupes man of Rs 23.5 lakh in share trading fraud; six booked

Thane, Aug 16 (PTI) A 44-year-old man was allegedly duped of Rs 23.5 lakh by the owner of a financial services company in Maharashtra's Thane district and his associates, who lured him to invest in share trading, police said on Saturday. A case has been registered against a Diva-based firm's owner and five associates under sections 316(2), 316(5) (criminal breach of trust), 318(4) (cheating) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for the crime that took place between March and August, an official said. The complainant, who owns a medical store, has alleged that the accused lured him to invest in share trading, he said. 'The complainant was induced to make repeated payments with the assurance of high returns. However, when he demanded his profits or the principal investment back, he was allegedly abused in slang and threatened with dire consequences," the official from Mumbra police said. The complainant approached the police on Wednesday. 'The accused allegedly threatened to kill the complainant and his family members when he insisted on repayment," the official said, adding that a probe is underway into the firm's operations and transactions. Trump signals US may not impose secondary tariffs on India over Russian oil

Agency: PTI New York, Aug 16 (PTI) President Donald Trump has indicated that the US may not impose secondary tariffs on countries continuing to procure Russia crude oil. There were apprehensions that additional secondary tariffs would have hit India in case the US decided to enforce them. 'Well, he (Russian President Vladimir Putin) lost an oil client, so to speak, which is India, which was doing about 40 per cent of the oil. China, as you know, is doing a lot…And if I did what's called a secondary sanction, or a secondary tariff, it would be very devastating from their standpoint. If I have to do it, I'll do it. Maybe I won't have to do it," Trump said on Friday. The US president made the remarks in an interview with Fox News aboard Air Force One en route to Alaska for a high-stakes summit meeting with Putin. The meeting concluded without any agreement on ending the Russia-Ukraine war. On Wednesday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had said if 'things don't go well" between Trump and Putin at the summit meeting, then secondary sanctions on India for purchasing Russian oil could go up. In an interview with Bloomberg, Bessent said, 'I think everyone has been frustrated with President Putin. We expected that he would come to the table in a more fulsome way. It looks like he may be ready to negotiate." 'And we put secondary tariffs on the Indians for buying Russian oil. And I could see, if things don't go well, then sanctions or secondary tariffs could go up," he added. On whether sanctions can go up or loosened, Bessent had said, 'Sanctions can go up, they can be loosened. They can have a definitive life. They can go on indefinitely." Trump imposed tariffs totalling 50 per cent on India, including 25 per cent for Delhi's purchases of Russian oil that will come into effect from August 27. Responding to the tariffs, the Ministry of External Affairs has said that the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. 'Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," it said. India Achieves Historic 100 GW Solar PV Manufacturing Milestone

Last Updated: India's solar PV module capacity hit 100 GW under ALMM, up from 2.3 GW in 2014. Minister Pralhad Joshi credits PM Modi's vision and the PLI Scheme. News18 India has achieved a historic milestone of 100 gigawatts (GW) of solar PV module manufacturing capacity registered under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), marking a significant leap in the country's renewable energy journey. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, called it a 'remarkable rise" from just 2.3 GW in 2014, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision and initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar Modules. He said the achievement strengthens India's path toward Atmanirbhar Bharat and its target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030. The Government of India's commitment is to make India self-reliant in solar PV manufacturing and establish the country as a major player in the global value chain. This commitment is supported through a comprehensive set of initiatives, including the PLI Scheme for High Efficiency Solar PV Modules and measures to provide a level playing field for the Indian manufacturers. The catalytic effect of these interventions has resulted in an expansion in solar module manufacturing capacity, from just 2.3 GW in 2014 to over 100 GW today. This reinforces India's commitment to achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and contributes meaningfully to global decarbonization efforts. The ALMM Order was issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) on 02nd January 2019. The first ALMM list for solar PV modules was published on 10th March 2021 with an initial enlisted capacity of around 8.2 GW. In just over four years, this capacity has grown more than twelvefold, crossing the 100 GW mark. This remarkable expansion is not just limited to depth of capacity achieved, but by the breadth of the number of manufacturers who has also significantly increased from 21 in 2021 to 100 manufacturers, who are operating 123 manufacturing units currently. This growth includes contributions from both established companies and new entrants, many of whom have adopted high-efficiency technologies and vertically integrated operations. The result is a diverse and competitive manufacturing landscape capable of meeting domestic needs and serving global markets. The crossing of the 100 GW solar module manufacturing capacity underscores the success of Indian solar PV manufacturing story, and the collective efforts of industry, various State governments, and the Government of India. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
