Brian Shuel obituary: photographer of early Bob Dylan and British traditions

Times6 days ago
W hen Brian Shuel made his way to the Pindar of Wakefield pub in Grays Inn Road in London one cold night in December 1962, he had no idea that his camera was about to capture musical history. It was two days before Christmas and the local folk music club was hosting a party. Among those taking an open-mic floor spot was an unknown folk singer from America on his first trip to Britain.
There were no more than a few dozen present and while the singer in a corduroy cap and fur-collared jacket performed two songs, Shuel took seven photos. When he got home, he recorded in his diary that he had taken pictures of a singer called 'Bob Dillon'. He thought no more about it until a year or two later, by which time songs such as Blowin' in the Wind and The Times They Are a-Changin' had made Bob Dylan the most famous folk singer in the world. His photos from that December night have since become legendary as a rare document of Dylan's first visit to Britain.

Lana Del Rey accuses rival singer Ethel Cain of body-shaming her amid ongoing feud

Lana Del Rey has accused fellow singer-songwriter Ethel Cain of body-shaming her in an explosive social media post. The Born to Die hitmaker, 40, has also reportedly blocked the up-and-coming Ethel on Instagram and recorded a diss track about her. The drama started when Lana namechecked Ethel in one of her new songs, which she previewed on Instagram on Wednesday. 'Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post,' she crooned in the ballad. After pop music fan account Popbase posted the clip, Lana left a comment accusing Ethel of body-shaming her. 'I didn't know who Ethel was until a few years ago - when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight,' she wrote. 'I was confused at what she was getting at. Then when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life I was definitely disturbed.' Ethel reacted to the drama on her Instagram Stories on Thursday, writing, 'Update: Lana Del Rey has blocked Ethel Cain on Instagram'. While it's unclear how exactly Lana and Ethel's beef started, fans have long speculated that the pair have been trading subtle jabs at each other for years. One of the most glaring instances of shade between the two stemmed from a 2022 New York Times article about Ethel titled, 'The Most Famous Girl At The Waffle House.' After the article was published, Lana famously worked a shift at a Waffle House in Alabama. She also referenced the incident in her unreleased diss track to Ethel. Fans have claimed that Ethel has made several shady posts about Lana on social media over the years, and that that's where their issues stem from. Making things more awkward, Ethel is friends with Lana's longtime ex-boyfriend Jack Donoghue. The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Ethel Cain for comment. Ethel burst onto the music scene in 2022 with her debut album, 'Preacher's Daughter'. Ethel reacted to the drama on her Instagram Stories on Thursday, writing, 'Update: Lana Del Rey has blocked Ethel Cain on Instagram' The album was acclaimed by critics and reached No. 10 on the Billboard 200, making Ethel the first openly transgender artist to score a top ten album. Her indie-pop style has earned her comparisons to Lana from music critics, which Ethel has dismissed as 'lazy'. She released her sophomore album, 'Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You', on August 8. Meanwhile, Lana has been busy working on her tenth studio album for the last two years. It was originally a country-inspired record called Lasso, but the songstress scrapped the idea and changed the album's title to The Right Person Will Stay. She has since scrapped the second title and the album currently has no release date. She most recently completed a sold-out stadium tour of the UK.

Red-faced Buckingham Palace inserts a VERY embarrassing falsehood into its '75 facts about Princess Anne' for her birthday

Royal watchers might have expected Buckingham Palace to celebrate Princess Anne 's 75th birthday with a gun salute, the release of an official photograph or an equestrian event. What they definitely didn't expect was the palace to mark Friday's milestone by announcing that King Charles 's sister had two secret stepchildren. Yet, remarkably, that is exactly what did happen when the official royal website published an article on Wednesday under the headline '75 facts about the Princess Royal'. The 14th 'fact' was that 'Her Royal Highness also has two stepchildren from her second marriage to Sir Timothy Laurence, Tom and Amy Laurence'. In fact, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, 70, had never married before he exchanged vows with the princess at Crathie Kirk, near Balmoral, in 1992 and does not have any children, let alone ones named Tom and Amy. Anne has two children, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, with her first husband, Mark Phillips. They divorced in 1992 after 19 years of marriage. It's not clear who first spotted the glaring error on the royal website but the article had been taken down by Wednesday evening. On Thursday, there was a notice on the site stating: 'The requested page could not be found.' Anne has two children, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, with her first husband, Mark Phillips. Pictured: Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips attend the Tusk Ball 2022 at the Natural History Museum in honour of African conservation on May 19, 2022 The mistake seems to have been made by a member of staff using incorrect information published in an article online by Woman & Home magazine in 2023. There are suspicions that Artificial Intelligence software, such as ChatGPT, may have been used to write the Woman & Home article. A palace source told the Daily Mail Thursday: 'The facts were checked, and that one was a late addition, sourced from a reputable publication online, which unfortunately wasn't put back through the checking process. There was no AI sourcing on our part.' Social media users were quick to spot the mistake, with one commenting: 'Tom and Amy Laurence? Either I've gone crazy or Sir Tim Laurence has secret children.' The user added: 'Pretty sure this is an error, but how did that happen? I can't think of any Tom & Amy siblings in the extended royal family.' Another posted: 'That would be the best hidden royal secret ever.' Someone else asked: 'That is so odd? Could it be an AI mistake? Someone at BP made that list with ChatGPT but didn't check it? Otherwise that would be one heck of a plot twist.' A third user stated: 'This is not true. Sir Tim does not have children from a previous relationship.' A Buckingham Palace spokesman declines to comment. No one at Woman & Home was available to comment. The fact series was also published on the Royal Family official Instagram channel. It revealed details of Anne's birth, explaining, 'Her Royal Highness was born Princess Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise at Clarence House on 15 August 1950, VJ Day, at 11:50 am.' Anne at the coronation of her brother in May 2023. Anne shows no sign of slowing down just yet and she holds the title of the hardest working royal, having taken on 474 engagements last year Anne with Queen Elizabeth II in June 2019. To mark her 70th birthday in 2020, Anne enjoyed a socially distanced lunch with her mother The fact was accompanied by a black-and-white photograph of the late Queen Elizabeth holding Princess Anne as a newborn. The second fact read, 'Princess Anne joined the 1st Buckingham Palace Company of Brownies and Guides in 1959. 'This group had first been created in 1937 for her mother, then Princess Elizabeth, and was reinstalled for Princess Anne.' The following fact revealed insight into Anne's charitable pursuits, explaining that she supports over 399 charities, organisations, and military regiments in the UK and beyond. The post also explained Anne's sporting talents, writing, 'Princess Anne was the first member of the British Royal Family to compete in an Olympic Games, when she participated as a member of the British Equestrian team at the 1976 Montreal Games.' Elsewhere in the post, Anne was seen carrying out charity work, with the fact, 'The Princess Royal was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 by President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia. 'She was nominated for her work as President of Save the Children across two decades.' The next fact read, 'In 1994, The Queen appointed The Princess Royal to the Order of the Garter. However, The Princess Royal requested to be installed as Royal Knight of the Order and not a lady.' Anne was seen stepping out of a vehicle in the slide explaining that she's the first member of her family to have a HGV licence Anne and her father Prince Philip at the 2012 Olympics. Anne, like Philip, is reportedly planning to wind down her royal duties as she approaches her 80th and then 90th birthday The impressive list didn't stop there, with the post also adding that Anne was the first member of the Royal Family to appear as a contestant on a television quiz show when she competed on the BBC panel game, A Question of Sport. Anne's diligent nature was also mentioned in the fact list, explaining that she's completed a total of 562 overseas visits and has visited every continent, making it unsurprising that she's often dubbed the hardest working in her family. The following fact said, 'Her Royal Highness has been Patron of the Scottish Rugby Union since June 1986, regularly attending matches and visiting team training sessions.' In another image, Anne was seen stepping out of a motor alongside the text, 'The Princess Royal is the first member of the Royal Family to have a HGV license. Her Royal Highness has also driven a double-decker London bus and a police car.' 'Her Royal Highness is Colonel-in-Chief of more than 20 British and Commonwealth regiments,' the next fact read. The post concluded with an image of Anne in her famous shades, writing, 'The Princess Royal is often seen sporting Team GB sunglasses, including at high-profile events such as the London 2012 Olympics and Royal Ascot in 2021.

Peter Andre hits back at Katie Price: Star reveals their children have been in HIS care since 2018 'for their safety' - as he airs frustration over staying silent on ex-wife's 'baseless lies' for 16 years

Peter Andre has hit back at his ex-wife Katie Price due to her 'baseless lies' over the last 16 years. The singer, 52, spoke out just hours after Katie, 47, urged him to take part in peace talks as their daughter Princess has been 'unfairly' dragged into their feud. Rumours of a 'rift' between Katie and Princess have been growing in recent weeks after Katie didn't attend Princess' 18th birthday party, or appear on the nepo baby 's fly-on-the-wall ITV television series. Katie, who shares Princess, 18, and son Junior, 20, with ex-husband Peter, later claimed that it was her daughter's management who had told her not to appear on the show. In a lengthy Instagram statement, Peter has now shared his side of the story, explaining: 'For sixteen years, I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silent has been incredibly frustrating. That ends today. 'The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangeemnts compel me to se the record straight. For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood. 'In 2019, the family courts issued a legally binding order to enforce this arrangement. I have never made this public before, out of respect for my children.' He continued: 'In 2011 and 2015, publicly documented court cases found my ex-wife had made false claims. She was ordered to pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise to me and my management. The same falsehoods are being repeated today. 'Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations I have yet to address. Those will now be dealt with in the coming months.' Daily Mail has contacted Katie's representatives for comment. It comes after Katie called on Peter to sit down with her and 'squash their beef' for the sake of their family. Speaking on the latest on the latest episode of her Katie Price Show podcast, Katie - who is currently recovering from more facial surgery - shared: 'There's no reason why both parents just can't be there to support her.' She continued: 'Now this isn't about me. I have to clarify this. I don't care that I'm not in Princess's show. 'I don't need to raise my profile by being on Princess's show, I do enough stuff. 'All what I want to do, is just whatever my daughter does, and it's the same with Junior, I don't care if I'm in the background, but I want to watch her do her photo shoots, I wanna watch her do her signings, because that's what I did. 'And my mom and you and Nan used to come along and support, and I'm proud of her. And I just wanna be there with her because I now I feel that I've missed out on so much.' Katie went on: 'It's so not fair to bring Princess piggy in the middle. 'So I think it's about time all of us adults just sit down and talk about what their beef is with me and just get over it. 'Life would be more at peace because I don't have a problem. I just think life would be a better place. 'Well, I'm not saying we all have to be best buddies, best friends, but come on. For the sake of the children, there's room for everyone to support your kids. Do you know what I mean? 'I'm not saying I have to stand with them and play happy families.' Elsewhere in the chat, Katie's sister Sophie urged her niece to push for Katie's inclusion on the show. Sophie mused: 'Ultimately I do think it's down to Princess to put her foot down a bit'. But Katie shot back and said Princess will be 'scared' to speak up to her management about what she really wants. She said: 'But, she'll be scared Soph. What you got to remember is when I started my career, I didn't have people like the management and all that around me. I used to get the train, go on castings, I put the graft in.' For a time, Katie and Pete were the golden couple of reality TV, with a lavish wedding and a string of big-money deals making them one of the most talked-about pairs in Britain. But things turned sour between the pair when their marriage came to an end in 2009 after four years together, with Katie claiming it was Peter's decision to walk away from the relationship. Much of the nation has witnessed the fall-out of the end Katie and Peter's marriage, and the string of public swipes that have been thrown from both sides. Princess opened up about the impact of her parents' tumultuous divorce in her new ITV2 reality series The Princess Diaries, sharing she felt she couldn't 'go to her dad' after he split from Katie due to their dislike of one another. She revealed on the show how she has a counsellor and previously 'couldn't just go to my dad' due to her parents 'not liking each other'. As Princess' show has aired, Katie has been recovering from yet more facial surgery. During her time at a Turkish clinic, Katie underwent a lip lift correction, brow lift, and eye lift, and was seen bloodied and bandaged as she stepped out this week while recovering from the procedures. Katie is no stranger to going under the knife, having had at least 16 boob jobs, three rhinoplasties and six facelifts. The Real Husbands of Katie Price In the decades since she first rose to fame, Katie Price has enjoyed – and quite likely endured – a decidedly busy love life that has seen her walk down the aisle three times before heading to divorce court in equal measure. Here's a look at the trio with whom she exchanged 'I dos'... and 'I don'ts': PETER ANDRE (2005 - 2009) The nation got to watch love blossom between the pair when they starred alongside one another on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here back in 2004. The flying sparks soon became nuptials, with blushing bride Katie and her erstwhile pop hunk beau tying the knot at Highclere Castle (the grand Berkshire estate of Downton Abbey fame) in September 2005. Katie, who was already mother to son Harvey (born in 2002 following a romance with former footballer Dwight Yorke), soon started a family with her new husband. The couple welcomed son Junior in 2005, while daughter Princess followed in 2007. Creation between the pair also came artistically, with the release of reality programmes, a failed talk show and a foray into the music world. However, after four years of securing their position as the Ken and Barbie of reality TV and glossy magazine deals, the pair announced in 2009 that they were going their separate ways. ALEX REID (2010 - 2012) Katie soon switched her romantic allegiance from a onetime ab-bearing pop heartthrob to musclebound MMA fighter Alex Reid. The two met at Michelle Heaton's 30th birthday party at London's Cafe de Paris. But shortly after they got together, Katie dumped Alex on live TV, only for him to win her back and the pair go from strength to strength. Weeks after proudly cheering her man on to a win on the 2010 edition of Celebrity Big Brother (also featuring none other than her ex-boyfriend Dane Bowers), Katie jetted off to Las Vegas to tie the knot with her new partner in February 2010 after just seven months of dating – and nine months after divorcing Peter. Following their Sin City sojourn, the pair returned to their native UK, where they had a formal ceremony – which was filmed for a TV series. However, after just 11 months of marriage, the pair announced they were splitting and their divorce was finalised in March 2012. While Katie declared at the time that she married Alex 'too soon', she would later go on to reveal that a major factor in their split was his cross-dressing alter-ego Roxanne. KIERAN HAYLER (2013 - 2021) Showing herself to be a true woman of the times, Katie embarked on a romance with former stripper Kieran after the two met on the now-defunct Blackberry Messenger service in 2012. And just two months after altering the paths of their lives via those thumb-tapped fateful opening messages, the twosome would go on to exchange nuptials in the Caribbean. Kieran proposed to a thrilled Katie on Christmas Day 2012, and just three weeks later, the pair would be pronounced husband and wife in the idyllic shores of the Bahamas on January 16, 2013. They had their marriage blessed in Weston-super Mare, and in the months that followed, it appeared that Katie had finally found her happily ever after. They welcomed son Jett in August 2013, and daughter Bunny in August 2014. But Katie's world came crashing down in 2014, when she discovered that Kieran had cheated on her with her close friend of 20 years, Jane Pountney, and was enjoying a fling with another of her pals, Chrissy Thomas. After publicly lashing out at all parties involved (and naming her pet pigs after her friends-turned-foes), Katie appeared determined to make things work when she renewed her vows with Kieran in 2015. But alas, it would not turn out to be third time lucky for Katie, as the pair split in 2018 amid even more cheating allegations. Their 'amicable' divorce was finalised in early 2021.
