‘Padakkalam' to ‘Gaganachari': Anime influence in Malayalam cinema
A few years ago, if someone said anime would start influencing Malayalam cinema, you might've raised an eyebrow. After all, Malayalam films have always leaned into realism — intimate stories, everyday people, quiet emotional punches.
But things are shifting. Slowly, subtly — and surprisingly.
It's not like characters are sprouting blue hair or shouting attack names. But something's changing. The colors. The moods. The tone. You can almost feel it — especially if you've grown up watching anime.
A different kind of visual energy
Take 'Padakkalam'. On the surface, it's a Malayalam film. But visually? It's bold. Loud. Almost too bright at times — in a good way.
Characters are a little exaggerated, scenes are cut with sharp energy, and the storytelling has this vibrant, kinetic feel. For anyone who's spent hours binging 'My Hero Academia' or 'Jujutsu Kaisen', it hits familiar nerves.
Padakkalam - Official Trailer
It's the kind of film that feels like it was made by someone who's spent some time in anime worlds — or at least deeply respects them.
"Me and director Manu are hardcore anime fans" - 'Padakkalam' writer Nithin C Babu

He said, "We are hardcore anime and DC fans. There are several easter eggs and One Piece action figures in 'Padakkalam'. The 'One Piece' fans may know about Arlong Park and in it, there is an entry sequence of Luffy and gang which is exactly used in a sequence in 'Padakkalam'. It is replicated shot by shot in 'Padakkalam'.
We are that much dedicated in putting all such references in the movie."
The writer further said that they didnt take the references randomly but they had inserted it intentionally.

Gaganachari is weird — and that's the point
Then you've got Gaganachari. A sci-fi mockumentary from Kerala? Ten years ago, that sentence wouldn't even make sense. But here it is — funny, eccentric, dystopian. If you squint, it feels like something from 'Cowboy Bebop' or 'FLCL'. It jumps genres without apology. That's straight out of anime's playbook.
"Maniyan Chittappan' will be a combo of 'Rick and Morty' and 'Doctor Strange' - Arun Chandu
Talking to Film Companion, the 'Gaganachari' director Arun Chandu said that the next part of the movie which is called 'Maniyan Chittappan' will have the influence of the series 'Rick and Morty' (even though it's not an anime).
He said, "Maniyan Chittappan' will focus on the adventures of a mad scientist."
Dubs made a difference
Here's what a lot of people don't realize — anime is now available dubbed in Malayalam. Over a dozen series, including Attack on Titan and Chainsaw Man, have local versions. That's huge. Kids in Thrissur or Kozhikode are growing up with the same characters Tokyo teens love. And when those kids become filmmakers? Well, don't be surprised if those influences sneak into the screen.
Reddit's already ahead of the curve
You should see some of the fan theories and wishlists floating around online. One person wants 'Erased' adapted as a Malayalam thriller. Another pitched Lijo Jose Pellissery directing a live-action horror inspired by' Junji Ito'. Are these real projects? No. But the fact that people are dreaming like this says a lot. There's an appetite. A hunger to blend the worlds.
Morality tales, Malayalam style
Here's the kicker. You don't have to change Malayalam cinema too much to align with anime. Look at 'Minnal Murali'. A small-town guy with superpowers, figuring out how not to mess it all up? That could be any number of anime plots. Themes like justice, identity, loss — both formats love digging into them.
With the increasing love for anime among the Malayali audiences and many of them turning to filmmakers, it can be expected that there will be more of anime references in Malayalam cinema in future.

'Zero Social Intelligence': Viewers Call Out Mang0 for Alleged Harassment of Maya Higa
Image via: X/C9Mang0 Beerio Kart 2025 quickly took a dark turn when Joseph "Mang0" Marquezly began to make inappropriate gestures toward several of the female streamers, one of them most notably Maya Higa. Some clips from the stream went viral as they showed Mang0 humping the air near the participants, including Maya, ExtraEmily, and Cinna. At one grotesque moment, Maya can be seen physically pulling away as Mang0 gyrates dangerously close to her head in a gesture that was deemed by viewers as invasive and extremely disturbing. Much of the footage has, since then, been deleted. But the story was out. The online community exploded with condemnation, with one Reddit user summarizing the sentiment, "Zero social intelligence." Drunken Behavior Crosses the Line Mang0, aptly known in the Smash community for an alcohol and content mashup, got eliminated very early on from the Beerio Kart competition; inevitably, it was then that he started acting up even more. According to reports and attendee recollections, he has subjected his victims to uncomfortable gestures on more than one occasion. Ludwig Responds: No Place Here In response to the growing backlash, event host Ludwig Ahgren confirmed Mang0 would no longer be welcome at any of his future events. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 10 Most Expensive Cars In The World Time-journal Read More Undo As time irrevocably moves on, and the Turing test loses its current viability, analysts that think shall be rendered more pertinent in light of examples such as this. Not 'Terminator', but this comedy earned Arnold Schwarzenegger most money
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger surprised his fans when he revealed that his film 'Twins' was his most profitable film of his career, despite being known for his superhit franchise 'Terminator', reported Variety. During an interview on the 'Watch What Happens Live' talk show, as quoted by Variety, Arnold said that 'Twins' delivered him 40 million USD. It was a comedy-drama that starred Arnold and Danny DeVito in the lead roles, marking their first collaboration on the big screen. The movie was released in 1988. "Well, number one was 'Twins' because we got no money for the salary, but ownership with a piece of the back end. It was fantastic. We went all the way to the bank with that," said Arnold as quoted by Variety. When asked if he made more than 20 million USD from the success of 'Twins', Schwarzenegger said his final payday was more than that. Asked if it exceeded 40 million USD, the actor replied, "It was more than that. It was more than any movie I ever made," as quoted by Variety. 'Twins' starred Schwarzenegger and DeVito as fraternal twin brothers. While Schwarzenegger was an iconic action star at the time thanks to 'The Terminator' films, 'Predator' and 'Conan the Barbarian,' his comedy chops were untested before that. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ukraine: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Search Now Undo "Why would they [cast me in a comedy?]" Schwarzenegger recently told his son, Patrick, during a chat for Variety's 'Actors on Actors' series. "They said, 'Are you crazy? The more people this guy kills on-screen, the more money we make. Why would we change that?' That was the dialogue until Ivan Reitman and Danny DeVito came along," said Arnold as quoted by Variety. Nobody wanted to make a comedy with Schwarzenegger, so the actor claims that he devised a plan to increase his chances of appearing in comedy films. He said, "If we don't take any salaries, we can shoot the movie for 16.5 million USD. We worked out a deal where we got 40% of the backend of the movie. It happened to be the best deal we've ever made," as quoted by Variety. According to Variety, 'Twins' grossed 216 million USD worldwide in theatres and profited even more on home video. Despite the film's huge paydays, Schwarzenegger never got around to making a sequel with DeVito. They planned a follow-up titled 'Triplets.' They also decided to add Eddie Murphy to the cast. But Reitman "passed away before we wanted to start shooting," said Arnold as quoted by Variety. Meanwhile, on the work front, the second Season of Schwarzenegger's action comedy 'Fubar' premiered on Netflix on June 12. Among his upcoming projects is the holiday movie The Man with the Bag, in which he'll play Santa Claus, reported People.
