Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, and Trisha Krishnan starrer Thug Life released theatrically on June 5, with a promising hype of success and breakthrough performance. However, in the end, the Mani Ratnam-directed film failed to hit the mark and ended up becoming a colossal disappointment at the box office.
While the makers initially assured that the film wouldn't release digitally before completing eight weeks in theaters, Thug Life has now ended up making its way to OTT.
When and where to watch Thug Life
Makers of Thug Life announced their collaboration with Netflix for its OTT deal, which they had announced the same way back. And now the movie has finally begun streaming on the portal from July 2, 2025, onwards.
Sharing the post on X, Netflix captioned it as 'Ithu Rangaraya Sakthivel-kum yamanukum nadakura poti. Watch Thug Life, now on Netflix in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.'
Official trailer and plot of Thug Life
The storyline of Thug Life revolves around a gangster named Rangaraaya Sakthivel, who, during a shootout incident with a rival kingpin, ends up protecting an orphaned little boy, Amaran, thinking he was the son who saved him.
Sakthivel later adopts the latter, Amaran, as his own son. Years later, after Sakthivel is released from imprisonment, he finds altered dynamics in his kingdom, where a grown-up Amaran is being treated as the next leader.
Unbeknownst to Sakthivel, Amaran is manipulated by falsities and hatches a plan to overthrow the former and assassinate him. While the latter initially thinks he is successful in doing so, the former returns with cold revenge against betrayal by someone he considered his own.

Metro In Dino box office collection day 1 early report: Sara Ali Khan, Aditya Roy Kapur film off to a weak start

Metro In Dino box office collection day 1 early report: Sara Ali Khan and Aditya Roy Kapur's Metro In Dino released on July 4 to mixed reviews. The romantic musical, directed by Anurag Basu, also features Fatima Sana Shaikh, Ali Fazal, Neena Gupta, Konkona Sen Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi, and Anupam Kher. Despite its ensemble cast, the film has received a lukewarm response at the box office. According to early estimates from industry tracker Sacnilk, it opened with Rs 2.63 crore nett in India on day one. On Friday, the film recorded an overall Hindi occupancy of 13.62% in theatres, with morning shows at 8.64%, afternoon shows at 14.24%, and evening shows at 17.99%, according to Sacnilk. Bengaluru reported the highest occupancy on day one, at 28.33%. Advance bookings for Metro In Dino brought in only Rs 50–60 lakh, a relatively low figure. Given the mixed response from both critics and audiences, it remains uncertain whether the film will gain momentum over its opening weekend. However, it's worth noting that the movie is already ahead of its predecessor, Life in a… Metro (2007), which earned Rs 87 lakh on its opening day and went on to collect Rs 24.31 crore worldwide over its lifetime. The latest installment of the Jurassic franchise, starring Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey, has already earned Rs 4.43 crore in India. An excerpt from SCREEN's review of Metro In Dino read, 'What I really enjoyed in the film were the nimble writerly leaps and the people speaking to each other as people do, in sentences which feel as if they are coming from the character's lives, rather than rehearsed dialogues on the page. Yes, there is the occasional floweriness, but that's just Basu leaning into his bent for amping up the mundane. As the architect of edifices full of messy emotions and registering graphs of hurt and happiness, Basu retains his old touch, and I found myself smiling in the dark, especially in the first half. Things do slacken post-interval; a couple of crucial situations repeat themselves, and the film strains to fill its nearly three hour length.'

City Civil and Sessions Court Judge Madhu N R passed an interim order in a suit filed by the Kannada Sahitya Parishattu and its President, Nadoja Dr Mahesh Joshi, Live Law reported. Haasan's remark that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil" sparked anger in Karnataka, leading to a ban on his film Thug Life, which hit theatres on June 5 in other parts of the country. During a promotional event for 'Thug Life", Haasan said: 'You are my family that is residing in Karnataka, and hence, you came all the way here. When I started the speech, I said that my life and my family are Tamil. Your language was born out of Tamil, and hence you are part of it," said Kamal Haasan to Shiva Rajkumar. Later, Haasan defended his remark, saying that he said it out of love and that a lot of historians have taught him the history of languages. First Published: July 04, 2025, 21:05 IST
