Kelantan ranks third for drug addiction in Malaysia with 11,280 cases
The National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) reported 597 cases per 100,000 population, trailing behind Terengganu (663) and Perlis (609).
AADK director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh noted a 5.4% decline compared to the previous year, attributing the improvement to integrated efforts such as enforcement crackdowns, preventive education, and tighter border controls.
'The closure of illegal entry points has helped curb the flow of prohibited substances,' he said after attending the State Drug Control Action Council Meeting.
Amphetamine-Type Stimulants (ATS) accounted for 89.3% of cases (10,071 individuals), followed by opiates (6.8%), psychotropic pills (2.5%), and cannabis (0.4%).
Ruslin emphasized ongoing collaboration with police, immigration, and customs to enhance prevention and rehabilitation programmes. - Bernama

High THC content fuels demand for ganja buds, says Nada D-G
KOTA BARU: Ganja buds have become the preferred form of cannabis being smuggled and consumed in the black market due to their stronger psychoactive effects and growing demand. National Anti-Drugs Agency (Nada) director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said more users and drug traffickers were turning to ganja buds as they contain a higher concentration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary compound responsible for the intoxicating effects. "Ganja buds are not a new product, but they have gained popularity over the past few years. Previously, most users consumed ganja leaves either by smoking them or extracting their oil. "However, with modern agricultural technology, ganja buds of much higher quality are being produced," he told the New Straits Times. Ruslin said the global legalisation of medical cannabis in several countries had further fuelled the demand for premium-grade ganja products. "Ganja buds are the most potent part of the cannabis plant. They grow at the top of the plant and are also known as 'buds' or 'nuggets'. Even though they come from the same plant, they are significantly stronger than the leaves or stems. "They can be smoked like cigarettes, infused into food or drinks (edibles), or turned into liquid form for electronic cigarettes (vapes)," he said. Despite their growing popularity, Ruslin said ganja buds remain classified as dangerous drugs under Malaysia's Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. "International studies have found that cannabis abuse can lead to two major effects – hallucinogenic effects, which disrupt perception and may cause hallucinations and depressant effects, which can induce calmness but impair brain and body functions," he said. Ruslin added that due to their high THC content, ganja buds produce a more intense and longer-lasting high compared with ganja leaves. "Users may experience extreme euphoria, sudden mood swings or hallucinations, especially when taken in large doses. "Some users may feel overly energetic after consumption while others may overdose and suffer from impaired movement or judgment," he said. In contrast, he added that ganja leaves tend to have milder and slower effects but still pose risks of addiction and mental impairment if used regularly. "Ganja buds are far more dangerous than cannabis leaves due to their higher THC content. However, both substances are illegal in Malaysia and can severely harm the body and mind if abused," he said.

Man denies armed robbery at Melaka convenience store
MELAKA: A man pleaded not guilty at the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court here today to a charge of committing armed robbery at a convenience store here last month. Amirul Hamry Hambalyi Azahari, 27, was charged with robbing the convenience store of RM202.80 in cash, three boxes of branded cigarettes and a price scanner when armed with a butcher knife. The offence was allegedly committed at the 7-Eleven premises at Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho 2, Central Melaka, at about 3 am on July 29. The charge, framed under Section 392 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 397 of the same law, provides imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping if found guilty. Judge Haderiah Siri allowed Amirul Hamry Hambalyi bail of RM9,000 and also ordered him to report to a nearby police station every two weeks, as well as surrender his passport to the court. She set Sept 2 for mention for the submission of documents and the appointment of a lawyer. He said the driver lost control of the classic American automobile which skidded and veered left, then hit two electric poles whereby both victims suffered serious injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. "The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and further investigations are still being carried out. Anyone with related information can contact the (traffic division of) Segamat police headquarters," he said in a statement. Meanwhile, Segamat fire and rescue station operations commander Senior Fire Officer (PBK) Abd Rahim Taufik said after receiving a distress call at 1.46pm, a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) with six personnel was dispatched to the scene. "On arrival at the accident scene, the operations team had to extricate the two victims in the car using special equipment.
