Trump, Starmer to meet in Scotland, with Gaza on agenda
Trump, riding high after announcing a huge trade agreement with the European Union late on Sunday, said he expected Starmer would also be pleased.
"The prime minister of the UK, while he's not involved in this, will be very happy because you know, there's a certain unity that's been brought there, too," Trump said. "He's going to be very happy to see what we did."
Starmer had hoped to negotiate a drop in U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs as part of the discussions, but Trump on Sunday ruled out any changes in the 50% duties for the EU and has said the trade deal with Britain has been "concluded."
The two men are expected to travel from Trump's luxury golf resort in Turnberry, on Scotland's west coast, to a second sprawling estate owned by Trump in the east, near Aberdeen.
Casting a shadow over their visit has been the deepening crisis in the war-torn Gaza enclave, where images of starving Palestinians have alarmed the world.
Starmer has recalled his ministers from their summer recess for a cabinet meeting, a government source said on Sunday, most likely to discuss the situation in Gaza as pressure grows at home and abroad to recognize a Palestinian state.
The British leader on Friday said his country would recognize a Palestinian state only as part of a negotiated peace deal, disappointing many in his Labour Party who want him to follow France in taking swifter action.
Trump on Friday dismissed French President Emmanuel Macron's plan to recognize a Palestinian state, an intention that also drew strong condemnation from Israel, after similar moves from Spain, Norway and Ireland last year. Reuters

The survey of 513 Democratic primary voters was conducted from July 11-17 - before images of Israel's forced starvation in Gaza made major headlines. Kirsten Gillibrand (+3). AIPAC (-35) and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (-64) are deeply unpopular with these voters. Mamdani voters were also asked what issues affected their decision to vote for him, and the top responses they cite are 'his plans to lower costs' (89%) and 'his plans to tax the wealthy and stand up to corporations' (86%). Notably, the third-most motivating reason for Mamdani voters is 'his support for Palestinian rights' (62%). The poll also included an oversample of New York's 10th Congressional district, represented by Rep. Dan Goldman, a Member of Congress funded by AIPAC who has repeatedly voted with Republicans to advance anti-Palestinian legislation. Goldman is deeply unpopular with his voters. 21% of his constituents say they expect to vote for him again, while 44% say they plan to vote for another Democrat in the June 2026 primary.

Turkey to start providing Syria with natural gas on August 2
Ammon News - Turkey will start providing Syria with natural gas from August 2, Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar told state-owned Anadolu news agency on Wednesday, adding Azerbaijan would also be involved in the exports running through Turkey's Kilis province. During a visit to Damascus in May, Turkish Energy Minister Bayraktar had said Turkey would provide Syria with 2 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually, in addition to 1,000 megawatts of electricity. He had said this month that Azerbaijan's SOCAR may be a partner in the project as well. On Wednesday, he said the natural gas provision would help Syria address its electricity needs as well, adding this would be used as fuel in electricity production at Syria's existing power plants. "We made a swap agreement with Azerbaijan, and the gas that will come from Azerbaijan will be exported to Aleppo, Syria, via Kilis," he said, adding Qatar would also be involved in this in terms of financing, and that ministers from the three countries would mark the start of the gas flow in a ceremony on Saturday. "With the 6 million cubic metres of gas that we are planning to send there, we will be able to realise 1,200 megawatts of electricity production," he added.
