Posts misleadingly claim Nigerian governor renamed school after monarch died

Attached to the post is a one-minute video showing Ogun state Governor, Dapo Abiodun, listing projects completed in honour of Adetona, including the renaming of a state-owned school from Tai Solarin College of Education to Oba Sikiru Adetona College of Science and Technology.
Shared more than 500 times, the claim was published by an account called 'AsakyGRN'. A review of the account shows it shares posts on Nigerian politics and entertainment with more than 89,000 followers.
The claim was also shared here on Instagram by a popular Nigerian blog called 'instablog9ja'.
Adetona, the late Awujale of Ijebuland and one of Nigeria's longest-reigning monarchs, died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 (archived here).
While Adetona was revered for his principled 64-year leadership of the culturally rich Ijebu people, Tai Solarin, known for his bold ideas, love for education and fearless voice for the common man, was celebrated as one of Nigeria's most influential educators, and has several institutions named after him.
However, the post does not show Ogun state governor Abiodun renaming an educational institution after Adetona following his death.

Using Google Lens to conduct reverse image searches on keyframes from the clip, AFP Fact Check was led to the original video published on YouTube on July 23, 2025 (archived here).
The video, which runs for 55 minutes, shows the 8th-day Fidau prayer — a Muslim memorial held to pray for the soul of the deceased — organised for the late monarch and attended by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, state governors, and other top political figures.
At 12'13', Abiodun takes the podium and speaks about Adetona's legacy and impact on Ogun state.
'In appreciation of our love, respect and support for Kabiesi, one of my first actions upon assuming office was the immediate award for the reconstruction of the Ijubu-ode/ Ojoda/Egbe road…', the governor says a few minutes later at 15'45' — the exact point where the video in the misleading posts starts.
At 16'08'', he adds: 'We also renamed the Tai Solarin College of Education in Ogun in his honour, and I am glad we did all these in his lifetime. It [the college] is now known as the Oba Sikiru Adetona College of Science and Technology.'
Using the institution's name as a keyword in an internet search, AFP Fact Check was led to a news article published in 2022 when the school was formally renamed — a development Abiodun had initially discussed in 2021 during a political campaign (archived here and here).
In a statement by Abiodun's media aide, Kayode Akinmade, the governor clarified that the institution renamed after the late monarch was one of two campuses that emerged from the former Tai Solarin College of Education (archived here).
He said the degree-awarding arm became Tai Solarin University of Education, while the second campus — focused on teacher training — was renamed Sikiru Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology in 2022.

Posts falsely claim to show footage of Ethiopian prime minister fleeing country after shooting
The post, published on Facebook on July 22, 2025, includes a video with text overlays in Amharic that translate to: 'Arat Kilo is in turmoil following the shooting of Abiy by one of his security guards.' The Facebook account spreading these claims is based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, according to information in the bio. The account regularly publishes posts on political developments in the Sidama region — one of Ethiopia's 12 regional states. Despite the end of the brutal two-year war in the northern region of Tigray in November 2022, Ethiopia is still plagued by conflict, including in the Oromia and Amhara regions. Oromia, Ethiopia's most populous region, has been dominated by an insurgency involving the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) since 2018, despite attempted peace talks that have failed (archived here). More recently, a local militia known as Fano was initially allied with the Ethiopian federal government before launching an armed rebellion in the Amhara region in April 2023 (archived here). The armed conflicts have posed major challenges for Abiy and his government. However, the videos do not show Abiy fleeing the country after being shot. Ethiopian cargo flight AFP Fact Check used the video verification tool InVID-WeVerify to conduct reverse image searches on keyframes from the video showing an aeroplane taking off at night. The results established that the video was first published on TikTok in 2021, with the caption that it shows an Ethiopian Airlines cargo Boeing 777 leaving for Liège in Belgium (archived here). An official statement issued in 2024 by Ethiopian Airlines confirms how the airports in Ethiopia and Liège have maintained a partnership for the transport of goods between Europe, Africa and the rest of the world for more than 17 years (archived here). Despite claims in the post that Abiy had fled the country following a protest in the capital on July 21, 2025, searches revealed there were no demonstrations in Addis Ababa on that day. We could not find the source of the second video, which appears to be user-generated content (UGC) -- meaning it was filmed by a bystander -- of police cars racing through a street, purportedly after Abiy was shot by a bodyguard. AFP Fact Check compared the images of the vehicles, some of them marked with the letters 'EFP' in yellow, and found they resemble the fleet used by the Ethiopian Federal Police. Are there more mosques than churches in Catalonia?
Claims on social media allege that the autonomous community of Catalonia in northeastern Spain is now home to more mosques than churches. A picture, which appears in posts on X and Instagram, among others, also says that 120 Catalan schools "teach Islam". The Catalan government's website features an official Religious Map of the region, which tracks established places of worship across various religions that hold services at least once a year. As of 2024, the most recent dataset, the Catalan government counts 7,260 places of worship throughout its territory, corresponding to 14 main religious denominations and some smaller denominations grouped into the "Other" category. The data show that Catholic churches are by far the most common type of religious centre in Catalonia, accounting for 5,665, or 78% of the total. However, these are declining due to the ageing population and certain parishes joining forces. Evangelical or protestant churches come in second place with 889 places of worship. The government notes that this is the denomination which has grown the most by places of worship since it started tracking the data. Islam, including mosques, is in third place with 326 religious centres, meaning that, no, there aren't more mosques than churches in Catalonia, and the social media posts claiming the contrary appear to want to spread an Islamophobic narrative. The Catalan government does, however, also note a "sustained growth" in Islam since the 1970s based on the number of places of worship. The social media posts sharing the image suggest that the claims originate from Spanish news outlet EDATV News, which describes itself as an independent media outlet pushing back against "political correctness, ideological censorship and cancel culture". However, the exact claim about mosques and churches doesn't quite appear in any of its articles. Instead, a search of its website takes us to an article about the supposed "Islamisation" of Catalonia. It contains a similar quote attributed to Júlia Calvet, a politician from the far-right Vox party. She says that there are Catalan municipalities with more mosques than churches, such as the municipality of Salt in the province of Girona. Referring back to the official government figures, while Salt does have more mosques than Catholic churches, combining churches from different denominations puts churches on top again. Calvet also reportedly refers to some 120 schools teaching students an Arabic language and Moroccan culture course, which alludes back to the "120 schools teaching Islam" claim in the social media picture. The programme does exist as per an agreement between Spain and Morocco. It aims to teach Arabic and Moroccan culture to both Moroccan and non-Moroccan primary and secondary school pupils in Spain. It's coordinated by the Moroccan embassy in Spain and the Spanish education ministry, and managed by the autonomous communities, according to the agreement. The programme is taught by Moroccan civil service teachers. The agreement underlines that the programme will teach Moroccan students to safeguard their identity while also respecting Spanish culture, encouraging tolerance and participation in Spanish society. The Spanish news agency Europa Press reported earlier this year that 120 public education centres in Catalonia would teach the course between 2024 and 2025, citing government figures. However, this is a language and culture class, not an "Islam" class as the social media posts claim. What about Spain in general? The numbers for the whole of Spain tell a similar story when it comes to centres of worship. Research published by the Observatory of Religious Pluralism in Spain in October 2024 puts the total number of places of worship in the country at 30,949. Catholic churches account for 22,933 of them, or 74% of the total number, with evangelical churches coming in at 4,455 and 1,839 for Islam. Catalonia is the autonomous community with the most places of worship in the country, followed by Andalusia and then Madrid.
