S eoul-based Datumo is the latest AI startup to raise cash from investors, closing a $15.5 million Series B round to keep up with growing demand for its model training datasets and evaluation, the company said.
Investors in the latest round include Salesforce Ventures, Palo Alto-based ACVC Partners, Japan's SBI Investment, KB Investment, Shinhan Venture Investment, Kiwoom Investment and Moorim Capital, the finance arm of Korean paper manufacturer Moorim. Datumo declined to disclose the valuation of the round. The startup's new funding brings its total to about $25 million.
The investment is Salesforce Ventures' first in an AI startup based in South Korea. 'In an era when AI safety concerns are the largest hurdle to widespread adoption, Datumo provides a generative AI evaluation solution that enables organizations to deploy AI-powered services across any domain at scale confidently,' Salesforce Ventures said in a statement.
Besides financial support, Salesforce's backing can provide Datumo with several benefits, including the possibility of working with the company on its AI agents and the software giant's customers. 'Generative AI is advancing at breakneck speed, with new services launching daily on top of foundational models,' Salesforce Ventures added in the statement. 'But for every company building with LLMs, one critical challenge remains: ensuring the reliability and safety of AI-generated outputs.'
Founded in 2018, Datumo, previously known as SelectStar, provides tools that can check the reliability of LLM responses and evaluate their performance to mitigate mistakes before deployment. 'It's just how foundation models work. They are probabilistic by nature, meaning they don't give deterministic results, so their output can change based on very small variation in input or prompt,' explains David Kim, cofounder and CEO of Datumo, in a video interview. 'So it makes quality assurance extremely hard.'
Kim, who was on Forbes' 30 Under 30 Asia list in 2021, says he's seeing growing demand from companies in regulated industries like finance. 'AI in regulated industries cannot just be good enough,' he says. 'It needs to be safe and align with the domain-specific expectations.'
One of the advantages of Datumo's evaluation tool is that it can automatically generate test cases. 'We automatically generate the questions to ask AI models—the test sets for the AI evaluation,' says Michael Hwang, cofounder and chief strategy officer of Datumo. 'We use our own AI system to automatically build the test cases, perform the evaluation and analyze the evaluation.'
Datumo also provides other AI development services such as data for pre-training foundation models. For example, the startup uses optical character recognition (OCR) to convert printed text from books into training datasets.
Earlier this month, a consortium that included Datumo, SK Telecom, Krafton and AI chip startup Rebellions was among the five consortia selected by South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT to develop a proprietary AI foundation model. Datumo is helping the consortium with AI data engineering.
Datumo is currently expanding in Japan and the U.S. Hwang relocated from Seoul to Silicon Valley to lead the global expansion.
Datumo is the latest AI-related startup in the semiconductor hub of South Korea to raise funding. In March, Movin, a startup that develops AI-based real-time motion capture devices, raised $2.7 million in a pre-Series A funding round from the likes of Atinum and Naver D2SF. Superb AI, also led by a Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia alum, raised $10.2 million in a Series C funding led by Doosan Investments in October.

RealPage Unveils Next-Generation AI Workforce at RealWorld 2025

LAS VEGAS & RICHARDSON, Texas, August 12, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--RealPage™, the leading global provider of AI-enabled software platforms to the real estate industry, this week unveiled the Lumina AI Workforce at RealWorld 2025, the premier event for multifamily innovation and leadership. With nearly 1,500 industry professionals in attendance, RealPage introduced a future shaped by agentic AI, where intelligent automation and human collaboration work together to elevate resident experiences, improve operational efficiency, and drive scalable growth across the multifamily industry. At the center of that vision is the Lumina AI Workforce, the multifamily industry's first agentic AI platform. Introduced in June 2025, the Lumina AI Workforce marks a decisive shift away from fragmented tools and task-based automation toward an orchestrated network of intelligent agents that act, learn, and collaborate across multifamily domains. These AI agents operate in sync with human teams, handling repetitive tasks, coordinating workflows, and surfacing actionable insights, so property staff can stay focused on strategic, high-impact work. "AI's real promise lies in how it reshapes the human experience of work," said Dana Jones, RealPage CEO and President. "It's about removing daily barriers, reducing burnout, and giving teams the bandwidth to show up with energy and purpose to focus on what matters most – delivering exceptional experiences for their residents." Meet the Lumina AI Workforce: Five Specialized Agents, One Coordinated Force On the RealWorld mainstage, RealPage introduced the first five Lumina AI Agents, each specialized in a core multifamily domain, yet built to collaborate seamlessly and drive results together: AI Leasing Agent: Connects with prospects, answers their questions, and helps guide them from first contact to signed lease. AI Resident Agent: Keeps residents informed, engaged, and supported - helping boost satisfaction and retention. AI Operations Agent: Handles the day-to-day details of running a property, like move-ins, renewals, audits, and reporting. AI Facilities Agent: Quickly responds to maintenance needs, schedules inspections, and keeps repairs on track with staff and vendors. AI Finance Agent: Takes care of routine finance tasks like coding invoices, catching errors, reconciling accounts, and sending reports. Attendees experienced these agents firsthand through immersive demos and hands-on product sessions in the RealExpo Innovation Hall. Because they're built directly into familiar platforms like OneSite, Knock, and LOFT, the agents feel intuitive from the start – yet deliver outsized impact by working together, sharing intelligence, and driving performance across the operation. RealPage and OpenAI Share a Vision for Responsible AI in Multifamily RealWorld 2025 also featured a forward-looking discussion between RealPage and OpenAI, moderated by Emmy-winning journalist David Pogue. The conversation explored how agentic AI is shaping the future of multifamily housing, with a focus on affordability, accessibility, and responsible implementation. Together, RealPage and OpenAI emphasized their shared commitment to building AI that is secure, compliant, and grounded in trust. "AI can only deliver real value when it's built on a foundation of trust," said Lance French, RealPage Chief Information Officer. "That's why we've embedded security, governance, and compliance into every layer of the Lumina AI Data Platform. From day one, we designed it to meet the highest standards for data protection and operational integrity, because our customers deserve AI that's not only powerful, but also accountable." A Platform Built for What's Next The Lumina AI Workforce is powered by the Lumina AI Data Platform, RealPage's multi-year investment in secure, scalable, and deeply integrated AI infrastructure. This foundation ensures AI is not a bolt-on, but a core capability embedded across the RealPage ecosystem. From keynote insights to live product experiences, RealWorld 2025 made it clear that AI is redefining what's possible, and that RealPage is leading the industry to embrace what's next. Perplexity AI Makes $34B Bid for Google Chrome

Perplexity AI, an $18 billion startup whose AI-powered search engine links out to original sources, just made an unsolicited offer to buy Google's Chrome browser for $34.5 billion, the Wall Street Journal was first to report. According to the WSJ report, Perplexity said its offer to buy Chrome is "designed to satisfy an antitrust remedy in highest public interest by placing Chrome with a capable, independent operator." "Multiple large investment funds have agreed to finance the transaction in full," Perplexity Chief Business Officer Dmitry Shevelenko said, per Bloomberg. Related: Everyone Wants to Buy Google's Chrome Browser — Including OpenAI, According to a Top ChatGPT Executive Chrome could be valued anywhere between $20 to $50 billion according to analysts, but it isn't exactly for sale. Google might not have a choice, though. In August 2024, a federal judge ruled that Google illegally monopolized the online search and search ads markets, writing in a 286-page opinion that "Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly" through exclusive agreements. One remedy suggested by the DOJ was for the tech giant to sell its Chrome browser. A judge is expected to decide by the end of August what Alphabet must do. Google is appealing part of the rulings and has indicated they are not interested in selling Chrome. But that doesn't mean there isn't a slew of potential buyers. In April, a judge asked ChatGPT's Head of Product Nick Turley if OpenAI would try to buy Chrome if parent company Alphabet was forced to divest, and he said a definite yes. Related: Firefox Would Like to Remind Everyone It Exists and 'Isn't Backed By a Billionaire' "Yes, we would, as would many other parties," Turley said in court, adding that ChatGPT and Chrome combined would give his company the chance to offer an "incredible experience" that's "AI-first." Perplexity AI is based in San Francisco and was founded in 2022. The startup is preparing the wide release of its own browser, Comet, though the company said it wouldn't make any "stealth modifications" to Chrome if the deal went through. Perplexity's formal bid also said it would "extend offers to a substantial portion of Chrome talent." At press time, Google Chrome has around 68% of the web browser market share (Safari is No. 2 with nearly 16%, Microsoft Edge has 5%, and Firefox has 2.5%). Perplexity AI also submitted a bid of at least $50 billion to buy TikTok in January, per CNBC. Indian fintech Paytm wins a major regulatory battle days after key investor exit

Indian fintech giant Paytm has received long-awaited approval from the country's central bank to operate as a payment services provider for online merchants — just days after one of its Chinese investors sold its entire stake — marking a key regulatory breakthrough after months of setbacks and scrutiny. On Tuesday, the Reserve Bank of India granted 'in-principle' approval to Paytm's Payment Services unit to operate as an online payment aggregator, parent company One97 Communications said in its filing (PDF) to Indian stock exchanges. The approval comes more than two years after the Noida-based fintech was initially denied the license in November 2022 due to non-compliance with India's rules on receiving investments from countries that share a land border. Without the license, Paytm was barred from onboarding new online merchants. At the time, the company said the restriction had 'no material impact' on its business or revenues. However, at its annual general meeting last September, One97 Communications founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma stated his intention to reapply for the payment aggregator license. The approval also comes over a year after the RBI banned Paytm Payments Bank from accepting fresh deposits and enabling credit transactions. Paytm weathered that impact by quickly shifting gears and partnering with Axis, HDFC, State Bank of India, and Yes Bank to make them serve as payment system providers for its consumers and merchants involved in online transactions and autopay mandates. With the new license, Paytm can operate as a service provider for online merchants, enabling them to accept a range of payment methods, including cards, net banking, and the Indian government-backed Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The approval also lifts the online merchant onboarding restrictions imposed by the central bank in 2022. The approval comes just a week after China's Ant Group exited Paytm by selling its remaining 5.8% direct stake in One97 Communications for $454 million through block deals. This follows an earlier exit in 2023, when Ant Financial sold a 10.3% stake — worth $628 million — to Sharma in a no-cash deal. Paytm is required to undertake a 'system audit,' including a cybersecurity review, and submit its report to the Reserve Bank of India within six months. If it fails to do so, the approval will lapse, per the RBI letter enclosed with the company's stock exchange filing. The license is also limited to online payment services and does not extend beyond that scope. San Francisco | REGISTER NOW The latest development will help Paytm control most of its value chain, from its offline sound boxes to the online payment gateway, and reduce its reliance on other bank partners, fintech investor Osborne Saldanha told TechCrunch. Paytm is currently the third most-used UPI payments platform, behind Walmart-owned PhonePe and Google Pay. The fintech accounted for 6.9% of the total 18.4 billion UPI transactions in June and 5.6% of the transaction value, per the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). In total, Paytm processed 1.27 billion UPI transactions worth ₹1.34 trillion (approximately $15 billion). Although Paytm trails PhonePe and Google Pay in the UPI market — with the duo handling over 82% of all UPI transactions in June — the company offers a broad suite of businesses and services to attract both consumers and merchants. These include offline merchant payment solutions with integrated hardware, software, and service layers, as well as a growing credit and lending business. Paytm reported (PDF) net income of ₹1.23 billion (approximately $14 million) for the first quarter of its financial year 2026, ending in June — a turnaround from a loss during the same period last year. The results beat expectations, as analysts had projected a loss of ₹1.27 billion (approximately $14.5 million). Revenue rose 28% year-over-year to $224 million, while the company's contribution margin improved to 60%, up from 50% a year ago. In addition to its recent financial growth, Paytm's shares have risen 13.25% year-to-date in 2025, signaling that the company is beginning to regain market confidence after more than a year of regulatory setbacks. The stock closed at ₹1,118.50 (approximately $13) on Wednesday, just before the regulatory approval was announced.
