Yankees' Ben Rice joins Lou Gehrig in exclusive New York franchise history for RBI record

Yankees' Ben Rice joins Lou Gehrig in exclusive New York franchise history for RBI record originally appeared on The Sporting News Believe it or not, this was not the first seven-RBI game of Ben Rice's New York Yankees career. And because that's true, it means he joins one of the most exclusive, impressive lists that a Yankee can be on. Prior to Saturday night, there was only one first baseman who had multiple seven-RBI games for the Yankees, and his name was Lou Gehrig. He had nine, for the record. Now Rice has two. He joins the multi-7-RBI-game club. MORE: Juan Soto, Josh Naylor and Cal Raleigh are making stolen bases cool again The Yankees needed all of that Rice production in a crazy 12-8 win over the Cardinals. He came through for the first time in the top of the fourth inning, with the Yankees down 5-3. With two runners on, Rice crushed a no-doubt home run to right field for a 6-5 lead. That was still the score two frames later when Rice came to the plate with the bases loaded and emptied them with a three-run double. It was simpler in the seventh, when Rice delivered an RBI single to make it 11-7 Yankees. MORE: Phillies' pitcher Matt Strahm has the funniest reason for investing in Pokemon cards The lefty swinger ended the night 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and a walk in addition to the seven runs driven in. He raised his season average to .240 and his season OPS to .804. Rice even overshadowed the fact that Aaron Judge hit a home run against the Cardinals to complete the list of having gone deep against all 29 other MLB teams. The slumping Yankees needed a night like this. Rice provided it, and now he's got his name second on a list that previously only included the superhero Gehrig. Dodgers 'Hopeful' Offense Continues to Produce Despite Max Muncy Injury

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers have lost one of their better hitters recently to the injured list. Max Muncy was officially placed on the IL on Friday retroactive to Wednesday with a right oblique strain. The Dodgers now have to hope Muncy's absence does not lead to more issues offensively. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 05: Max Muncy #13 of the Los Angeles Dodgers at bat during the third inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium on August 05, 2025 in Los Angeles,... LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 05: Max Muncy #13 of the Los Angeles Dodgers at bat during the third inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium on August 05, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. More"The Dodgers can only hope their offense doesn't melt down with the absence of third baseman Max Muncy like earlier this season," wrote MLB insider Bob Nightengale. "The Dodgers averaged an MLB-low 3.5 runs a game, hitting .217 while going 10-15 in the 25 games Muncy missed." Los Angeles has won its first two games against the San Diego Padres since Muncy was added to the IL. The Dodgers scored nine runs in those two games entering Sunday, and the offense wasn't showing signs of slowing down. However, one series is a much smaller sample size than the 25 games Muncy has missed so far this season. Muncy struggled for the first 2 1/2 months of the season, and he was even viewed by some as a candidate to be designated for assignment in May when he was hitting below or just above the Mendoza line. Despite the early-season struggles, the 34-year-old infielder has turned it around. Given how tight the race is in the National League West, the Dodgers can't afford to go into an offensive slump without Muncy in the lineup. The two teams are going to be neck-and-neck over the final six weeks of the season. Los Angeles will be waiting for Muncy to return as soon as possible and hopes he doesn't need a rehab assignment.
