Purdue coach Barry Odom took shot at Indiana football schedule. Curt Cignetti responds

Indianapolis Star13 hours ago
LAS VEGAS — Indiana coach Curt Cignetti expected criticism of his program's scheduling approach from the entitled fanbase in the SEC.
Last week the fire came from closer to home. Purdue coach Barry Odom took a passing shot at the Hoosiers' preference for low-level nonconference opponents.
Cignetti said he saw Odom's comments, made last week on an Indianapolis radio show. Odom said teams owe it to fans to play schedules full of compelling games. Purdue plays Notre Dame annually in addition to its nine Big Ten games.
In the wake of news that IU had canceled future series with Virginia, Odom also took a swipe at his team's biggest rival.
"I could take the approach of one of the other schools in the state, cancel games and do some of those things, but the schedule is what it is," Odom said.
Tuesday at Big Ten media days, Cignetti was asked if he was surprised by Odom's comment.
Fire away: Purdue football coach Barry Odom takes shot at Indiana's schedule
"I like Barry Odom," Cignetti said, later winking. "Taking a shot at our schedule — did I think about it much? Not really, but that would be an overstatement.
"... Not that I didn't think much of it (as in) he shouldn't have done that. I saw it. It was a flicker in my brain, and then it was over."
Beyond this season. Purdue plays both Wake Forest and Notre Dame in both 2026 and 2028, North Carolina and the Fighting Irish in 2027, Vanderbilt in 2029 and TCU in 2030. Indiana currently has no power conference non-Big Ten games scheduled until a 2030 game against Notre Dame.
Despite an uninspiring nonconference schedule, the Hoosiers were prepared enough to beat Purdue 66-0 in last season's Old Oaken Bucket game. After that game, Purdue fired Ryan Walters and hired Odom.
Until that gap closes, Purdue coaches will have more concern about playing IU than who the Hoosiers play in the other 11 games.

USC football picked to finish 9th in Cleveland.com Big Ten preseason media poll

Believe it or not, the start of the 2025 college football season is just around the corner. Tuesday marked the start of Big Ten Media Days in Las Vegas, kicking off the year for the sport's biggest conference. On Monday, released its preseason Big Ten media poll. The writers picked the Trojans to finish in the middle of the conference at No. 9. Penn State was picked to win the conference, narrowly edging out No. 2 Ohio State. The Nittany Lions and Buckeyes were followed by (in order) Oregon, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, and Nebraska prior to the Trojans. Former Pac-12 foe Washington came in one spot behind USC at No. 10. The 11-18 spots featured (in order) Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Rutgers, UCLA, Maryland, Northwestern, and Purdue. A ninth place finish in the Big Ten would certainly be a disappointing result for USC. Lincoln Riley and the Trojans will be looking to prove their doubters wrong on the field this fall. The goal is not to outperform this poll. The goal is to be a top-tier Big Ten team fighting for a College Football Playoff spot. Anything less than 9-3 would be a clear-cut disappointment for the Trojans.

Indiana's Curt Cignetti takes swipe at SEC amid questions around schedule

The Indiana Hoosiers finished 11-2 and made an appearance in the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history last season and are looking to build upon that success in 2025. The Hoosiers start the season with Old Dominion, Kennesaw State and Indiana State before Big Ten Conference play begins against Illinois on Sept. 20. However, the Hoosiers' schedule was the topic of conversation during Big Ten Media Days on Tuesday. Hoosiers head coach Curt Cignetti talked about why the school canceled a home-and-home series against the Virginia Cavaliers and took a swipe at the SEC in the process. "That was a scheduling philosophy that began before I was hired. But I did sign off on it upon being hired, before our first season," he said, via On3 Sports. "Look, here's the bottom line – we picked up an extra home game, and we play nine conference games. "The two best conferences in college football – any football guy that's objective will tell you – is the Big Ten and the SEC. Twelve of the 16 SEC teams play three G5 (Group of 5) or an FCS game. Twelve of those teams play 36 games – 29 G5 games and seven FCS games, and one less conference game. So we figured we'd just adopt SEC scheduling philosophy. Some people don't like it. I'm more focused in on those nine conference games." Cignetti continued to breakdown the scheduling in an effort to back Big Ten schools who may be worthy of an automatic qualifier for the expanded College Football Playoff. "You want to put the best teams in the playoff? Give the best leagues the (automatic qualifiers), but make them earn it with play-in games," Cignetti added. "And we wouldn't be opposed to Big Ten-SEC regular season games every year. "We need to standardize the schedule across the board if we want to have objective criteria for who should be in the playoffs and who shouldn't, and we need to take the decision-making off the committee to some degree." The Hoosiers are set to take the field with Fernando Mendoza under center. Omar Cooper Jr., who had 21.2 yards per reception, is set to return as well.

Kinnick garners respect in USA TODAY Sports Big Ten stadium rankings

Kinnick Stadium is one of the most historic stadiums in all of college football. The home of the Iowa Hawkeyes is named after Heisman Trophy winner and World War II hero Nile Kinnick, whose statue every player and coach passes by on game day. It's a place where The Hawkeye Wave at the end of the first quarter reminds everyone that life is bigger than football. And it's a place where opponents of the Hawkeyes hate to play because Iowa usually plays very well at home. Iowa is 109-60 at home since 2000, good for an almost 65% winning percentage. They've pulled off their fair share of huge wins, beating numerous top-five teams like Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State. While it hasn't always been positive, Kinnick Stadium is widely regarded as a great home-field advantage for the Hawkeyes. And USA TODAY Sports agrees with that sentiment with the release of their 2025 Big Ten stadium rankings. Where does Kinnick land USA TODAY Sports' Big Ten stadium rankings? Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports gave Kinnick Stadium some respect. Myerberg put the home of the Hawkeyes at No. 6 on the rankings, just cracking the upper third of the stadiums in the conference. In addition to goosing Iowa's Big Ten chances – the Hawkeyes are 22-6 at home since 2021 – Kinnick is home to the best new tradition in the sport: Since 2017, players and fans turn at the end of the first quarter and wave to the patients at Stead Family Children's Hospital. 'The Hawkeye Wave' is already an indelible part of the college football fabric. - Myerberg, USA TODAY Sports The five stadiums ranked ahead of Kinnick are Ohio Stadium (Ohio State), Beaver Stadium (Penn State), Autzen Stadium (Oregon), Michigan Stadium (Michigan), and Husky Stadium (Washington). Those are some legendary stadiums joining Kinnick at the top of this list, and it just goes to show how impressive the Big Ten conference as a whole is with its stadiums. Iowa fans will return to Kinnick on Aug. 30 for the 2025 season opener against Albany, where the Hawkeyes will look to continue their home dominance.
