Kevin Quiambao reflects on 'learning experience' with Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA Asia Cup

GMA Networka day ago
Kevin Quiambao described his stint with Gilas Pilipinas in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup as a "learning experience," saying he hopes to apply the lessons he gained in future tournaments.
Quiambao delivered outstanding performances for the Philippines throughout the Asian tourney, but it was in the game against Australia where the reigning back-to-back UAAP Most Valuable Player stood out the most.
The De La Salle University product had 17 points, including five three-pointers, to lead Gilas against the Boomers. The nationals, however, fell to Australia, 84–60.
"It's a great learning experience for us," Quiambao said.
"We will carry this over until the next one in November."
Quiambao was referring to the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, where the Philippines is set to face New Zealand, Guam, and Australia again.
The 6-foot-4 forward also reflected on Australia's strong start as Gilas struggled to execute its plays.
"For this game, I think right from the start, they were having a run. They got three, early three pointers. So we're having a hard time catching up," he said.
"So for me as a young gun here, as much as I want is to execute the system, follow the game plan, but it didn't work the whole game. So yeah, on to the next one, and we will keep our heads high for this one."
On top of his FIBA stint, Quiambao has gained valuable experience over the past few months, including training in the United States under foreign coaches.
Quiambao, however, is expected to return to South Korea soon to reunite with the Goyang Sono Skygunners in the KBL.

Gilas Pilipinas' unforgettable moments in 2025 FIBA Asia Cup

Gilas Pilipinas may have wrapped up its campaign in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup, but the tournament was filled with highlights that left a lasting impression on Filipino basketball fans. Here are some of the top moments from Gilas Pilipinas in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup: Kevin Quiambao's dominant second half performance vs. Chinese Taipei Quiambao showed why he is one of the brightest stars in Philippine basketball. Even before the quarterfinals match against Australia, Quiambao already grabbed the attention of fans with a dominant second half performance against Chinese Taipei. Trailing 73-62 in the fourth quarter, Quiambao sparked Gilas' comeback attempt. He opened the period with a booming three-pointer, followed by a basket to bring the team within 73-67. He eventually scored 13 of his 17 total points in the final quarter alone, but the comeback fell just short, 95-87. In the tournament, Quiambao averaged 12 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. Dwight Ramos leads the way in crucial win vs. Iraq In a must-win matchup against Iraq, Ramos stepped up big time. Justin Brownlee then followed with a trey of his own to widen the margin for the national team. Ramos scored 10 of his 21 total points in the third quarter and filled the stat sheet with six rebounds, two assists, and two steals to keep Gilas' FIBA Asia Cup bid alive, 66-57. With momentum on their side, Gilas powered through in OT, 95-88, to seal the win and secure a spot in the quarterfinals. Cone excited about possibly adding Quentin Millora-Brown to Gilas if status becomes official

While Gilas Pilipinas has not yet received official confirmation regarding Quentin Millora-Brown's FIBA eligibility, national team head coach Tim Cone said he is looking forward to possibly including him in the lineup. Millora-Brown's name has been floated for the national team even before the Philippines' stint in the FIBA Asia Cup. He even played for the Macau Black Bears in a tune-up game against Gilas Pilipinas ahead of the tournament. 'Nothing official yet, but we're certainly excited about putting him in the lineup if it does become official,' Cone said in a message to GMA News Online. A report stated that Millora-Brown, who stands at 6-foot-10, has been classified by FIBA as a local, which would allow him to play without being considered a naturalized player. Born in the United States, Millora-Brown is the grandson of a Filipino doctor. In 2024, he helped lead the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons to the UAAP Season 87 men's basketball title. GMA News Online has also reached out to Millora-Brown regarding the development. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
