When 'orthodox' Rajesh Khanna would 'snap' at Anju Mahendru for wearing skirts
Late Bollywood superstar
Rajesh Khanna
's love life was always in the spotlight, especially his famously stormy relationship with actress
Anju Mahendru
. Their on-and-off romance started long before his marriage to
Dimple Kapadia
and later involvement with
Tina Munim
, yet continued to make headlines for decades.
In a 1987 Screen magazine article, all three women – Anju, Dimple and Tina – spoke openly, along with Khanna himself, who gave his side of the story.
A love full of contradictions
Anju Mahendru once said about Rajesh Khanna, 'Basically he is a very orthodox man, yet somehow he always gets attracted to ultra modern girls. I know it's a contradiction, but then Rajesh Khanna is like that.' This contradiction was clear in how he reacted to Anju's clothes. She shared, 'If I wore a skirt, he'd snap, why don't you wear a saree? If I wore a saree, he'd wrinkle his nose and say, 'Why are you trying to project a Bhartiya nari look?''
Honesty that hurt
Another reason the relationship suffered was Anju's honesty.
Khanna would often show her early clips of his films, hoping for a bit of praise. But Anju, known for being upfront, didn't hold back if she didn't like what she saw. 'I was critical because that's how I am. If he was bad, I always said so. Why should I have praised him just to keep him happy? There were plenty around to boost his ego. He has always been sensitive to criticism and I've always been very frank,' she said.
Khanna, who was used to being adored by the public and those around him, found this hard to handle.

'I didn't expect praise. All I wanted was a nod of approval… A gesture that reassured. But she was always ruthlessly critical,' he admitted.
A new chapter with Dimple Kapadia
After breaking up with Anju, Khanna married actress Dimple Kapadia in 1973, just months before her debut film 'Bobby' hit the screens and made her an overnight star. The couple quickly became one of Bollywood's most talked-about pairs. They had two daughters –
Twinkle Khanna
, who later became an actress and author, and
Rinke Khanna
, also an actress for a brief period.
Though Khanna and Dimple separated in the 1980s, they never officially divorced. Dimple moved out but remained a steady presence in his life, especially in his final years. She stood by him during his illness, and the family in his last days.

Newly released teaser of ‘8 Vasantalu' promises a breezy, emotionally rich monsoon romance
After creating a buzz with its impactful first teaser, the makers of 8 Vasantalu have unveiled a second teaser, deepening curiosity with its poetic visuals and emotionally layered storytelling. Directed by Phanindra Narsetti and backed by top production house Mythri Movie Makers, the film stars Ananthika Sanilkumar in the lead and is set for a theatrical release on June 20. Produced by Naveen Yerneni and Y. Ravi Shankar, the teaser opens with a visually lyrical scene—Ananthika, soaked in the rain, silently watching Sanjay, a Telugu writer newly arrived in Ooty. Her voiceover captures the complexity of his character: 'When he writes with love, his words bloom like roses kissed by rain. But when he writes with rage, they strike like grenades with pins unchained.' The narrative hints at an evolving emotional connection between the leads. One standout line—'Girls prefer someone who gently wipes their tears and shows kindness, rather than someone who holds a sword and shows only anger'—strikes a powerful emotional chord. The teaser ends with a touching sentiment from the male lead: 'Love is not a destination to reach, but a journey we are meant to take,' highlighting the film's soulful tone. Visually enchanting, every frame carries emotional depth. Vishwanath Reddy's cinematography and Hesham Abdul Wahab's music elevate the film's romantic aura. With production design by Aravind Mule and editing by Shashank Mali, 8 Vasantalu promises a rich cinematic experience.

Mary Janes: The shoes that never went out of style
'Mary Jane shoes are versatile and can be styled in many ways, depending on the occasion and your personal aesthetic,' Namita Alexander, celebrity stylist From the standard school shoes style for girls to Carrie Bradshaw's discovery of the legendary Manolo Blahnik Mary Janes in an episode of Sex and the City , we have all been introduced to Mary Jane shoes in different ways. Versatile and timeless, they can be worn by both men and women and styled in many ways, depending on the occasion. If the recent Spring Summer 2025 showcase at Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks is anything to go by, Mary Janes have been conquering the runways, with reinterpretations by luxury brands like Miu Miu, Prada, Bally and Wales Bonner. Once the 'it' shoes for clubbing in the 1920s, Mary Janes have remained a fashion staple over decades. How to style Mary Janes CASUAL LOOK: Pair your Mary Janes with a cute sundress or a flowy skirt for a feminine, playful vibe. They also work well with skinny jeans or baggy denim. For a more relaxed feel, try them with a simple T-shirt and denim shorts WORK/OFFICE LOOK: For a polished, businesscasual look, opt for neutral or black Mary Janes with a tailored dress, a pencil skirt, or trousers paired with a blouse PREPPY LOOK: Channel schoolgirl chic by styling your Mary Janes with knee-high socks or tights, a pleated skirt, and a button-down shirt or sweater VINTAGE/RETRO LOOK: Lean into the shoe's nostalgic appeal by pairing them with a retroinspired tea-length dress with a floral pattern or a high-waisted skirt with a tucked-in blouse Inputs by celebrity stylist Namita Alexander 'Manolo Blahnik Mary Janes?! I thought these were an urban shoe myth!' Carrie Bradshaw exclaims, as she finds a pair in the fashion closet at the Vogue office, in season 4 of Sex and the City. The iconic style turned 30 last year – first debuting in August 1994 'Balance the feminine nature of the shoes with fitted tops' While styling Mary Janes, balance is the key, say stylists. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo 'Sleek Mary Janes complement structured outfits, while chunkier styles look great with relaxed fits. A monochrome outfit paired with a bold shoe colour can also elevate the look,' says celebrity stylist and personal shopper Dipika Mohta. Celebrity stylist Pyu Mishra adds, 'Balance the feminine nature of the shoes with fitted tops or blazers. When choosing Mary Janes, ensure a proper fit. Opt for highquality synthetics or leather for durability, and select a heel height that matches your comfort level.' What to avoid Avoid pairing delicate Mary Janes with overly bulky pieces, as the contrast can look unbalanced Be mindful when styling them with socks — some styles work well, but thick or heavily patterned ones might take away from the shoe's elegance. Stick to thinner socks like tights, ankle socks, or knee-highs for a polished look Since Mary Janes have a distinctive style, avoid overaccessorising with chunky jewellery or too many statement pieces. Let the shoes be the focal point to prevent the outfit from looking too busy – Inputs by Dipika Mohta and Namita Alexander The origin of Mary Janes Mary Jane, a character from the Buster Brown comic strip, played a significant role in popularising these shoes in mainstream culture. The classic design — closed-toe, lowcut, with one or more straps across the instep — was worn by both Mary Jane and Buster Brown.
