The moment that keeps Forrest coming back for more at Celtic

Glasgow Times3 days ago
The prospect of a 7000-mile round trip to Kazakhstan for a Champions League shootout tie is one that the Celtic players would embrace if it came to it, but as those who remember previous trips to Central Asia will testify, it is one they could also do well without.
That being said, there is at least one grizzled veteran of those longest of Celtic away days that has fond memories of facing Kazakh opposition. In fact, James Forrest had one of his most cherished moments in a Celtic jersey in a Champions League qualifier against Shakhter Karagandy, albeit in the home leg at Celtic Park.
After a 2-0 defeat on their travels way back in 2013, Forrest struck at the death in Glasgow to earn his side a 3-2 aggregate victory, and send Celtic into the group stage of the competition.
(Image: Colin Mearns) The feeling he had that night is one that has never really left him, and even after all these years, it is exactly the sort of moment that keeps the 34-year-old coming back for more.
"It's hard to describe,' Forrest said.
'That's why you keep playing, you want more because it's addictive, the feeling you have with the players.
'The buzz you get from it is, I don't get it with anything else, and as I said, it is addictive.
'When you've had so many highs with Celtic as well, it's hard. Sometimes you do that and then two days later you're travelling up and you're playing another game somewhere and you need to get going again.

'But then I think when you do experience stuff like that, it does make you think, 'I want more of that'.
'You go away pre-season, you're working five, six weeks and double sessions, and at games that maybe no-one's watching or training sessions that no-one's there, but then it all comes worth it when you get moments like that, one hundred percent.
'I always just think, just keep trying to work hard and keep trying to play for as long as I can, as long as I feel good, because I've done this since I was a wee boy.
'So, I just think try and go for it. I've got another year here, and as I said, I'm not even thinking about that now, just enjoying the games.
'It's pressure games every couple of days and it is great to be a part of."
If it is to be Almaty – and the Kazakhs hold a 1-0 advantage after hosting Slovan in the first leg of their tie last week – Forrest is well versed on how to handle it. And no matter what, he will be offering no excuses should Celtic fall short of the league phase of the competition.
"I think we've maybe been there like three or four times, and I've been there with Scotland as well,' he said.
'It is difficult because you probably need to go two days before the game just to adjust because of how far away it is.
'I think whatever team we get, it will be two difficult games. I think we've got enough experience, we've got a lot of international players, they know about the travel and stuff like that, and these away games can be like cup style in that as well.
'But then, Celtic Park is to be really intimidating for the other team as well.
'The club have got sports scientists, the physios and stuff like that; they've got people that are looking after it to give the boys the best chance.
'As I said, we've done it before, so whatever team we get, there'll be no excuses either way."
What may be driving Forrest this weekend is a desire to have a measure of revenge on Aberdeen for the way that last season ended, with the Dons denying Celtic a treble with their penalty shootout victory in the Scottish Cup Final.
This though, he says, is a fresh start.
'I think Aberdeen are one of the best teams in Scotland and I think every time you play them, there's a rivalry there anyway,' he said.
'You go to Pittodrie; every year I've been up there, the managers, coaches, fans, they all know it's a hard game, so I don't think we'll look much into the cup final.
'It's a new season and we want to get off to a good start and just keep the momentum going, and hopefully get another three points."
In the longer term, as well as hoping to do enough throughout the course of the season to earn another year at the club, Forrest still has an eye on the international scene.
(Image: Colin Mearns) The winger was desperately disappointed not to have seen any game time at all last summer during the European Championships, but he isn't closing the door on crowning his career with an appearance at next year's World Cup.
"I spoke to Steve Clarke a couple of times at the start of last season, and then I got a really bad injury in December for a few months,' he said.
'The main thing for me has always been making sure I'm playing well for Celtic and then if Scotland came along, great.
'But no, I've not spoken to him this season, so as I said, I just want to do well for Celtic in the games and then we'll just kind of see from there.
"I had the conversation with him last year, it was a good one, and because it was after I went to the Euros and didn't play, it was if he needed me, then he'd give me the call and it was just kind of left like that.
'So as I said, it's always kind of open and I would never shut the door. I think any player, you want to play in the top competitions and you want to play Champions League, you want to play for your national team.'
*James Forrest was speaking at Celtic's annual 'Touching the Trophies' experience, where season ticket holders with sensory impairments are given the opportunity to come to Celtic Park and physically engage with the club's silverware.

Rangers must have belief to take more risks

The Light Blues drew 1-1 in their league opener at Motherwell last week but went into the game against Dundee at Ibrox on Saturday with confidence following a 3-0 win over Viktoria Plzen in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier on Tuesday night. However, the Taysiders stifled the home side while threatening in attack and they took the lead in the 51st minute through a looping Ryan Astley header. Gers centre-back Nasser Djiga was sent off for a 'last man' challenge on Finlay Robertson just before the hour mark but as the game moved into added time Gers captain James Tavernier, who came off the bench, levelled from the spot. Dessers had the ball in the net in the seventh minute of added time only to be ruled offside, which left the Light Blues with two points from six and having not won either of their opening two league games for the first time since 1989. The Nigeria striker said: 'At this club, you need to win games and to win games, you need to score goals. Sometimes it takes a risky pass to open it up, or maybe even to scare the opponent so next time they don't step through on a midfielder and they stay in position and maybe then you open up the space a little bit more there. 'It's a little bit of belief, confidence. 'There's no time at this club. Not a lot of patience, which everybody knows when they play here and that's okay, that's fine, we're fine with that. 'But somewhere inside yourself, you need to find that confidence and the courage to go out there and do that, make the pass, make the dribble, try the shot, and just to create something for the team. 'I think we showed it at certain moments and then people talk about the European games or the Old Firm games last season. But like I said, it's the consistency. 'Can you do it on a Tuesday and do it again on Saturday and do it again on Tuesday? For me, that's the thing that's the next step for us.' Dundee have next weekend off as they are not involved in the Premier Sports Cup fixtures but boss Steven Pressley, disappointed to have left Govan with only a point, will work his players in preparation for the game against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on August 23. He said: 'We've actually organised two friendlies for next Thursday because I want to give all the players 90 minutes. 'You can see we've got some players still behind in their fitness, the likes of Callum Jones who came in late was struggling, he got cramp at the end of the game. 'So we need to use this time to build towards the Kilmarnock game.'

United need further recruits to seriously challenge despite £200m spree

Manchester United have spent an eye-popping £200million on three forwards during the summer but is it enough to seriously strengthen an attack which only scored 44 Premier League goals last seaon? Matheus Cunha was the first to arrive when he was signed from Wolves with Bryan Mbeumo joining from Brentford before Benjamin Sesko was unveiled as the third new striker before Saturday's 1-1 draw in the friendly with Fiorentina at Old Trafford. The 22-year-old was linked with Liverpool, Newcastle and Arsenal among others but United have agreed a £73million deal with RB Leipzig to add his undoubted potential to what was a powderpuff attack. He has scored 39 goals in 87 matches for the Bundesliga side and is interesting each-way material at 25/1 with BetVictor to win this year's Golden Boot. However… Rasmus Hojlund may have only scored 14 times in the top flight in two seasons with United but often lacked quality service. United failed to score in 15 league matches, a record which was only better than bottom club Southampton, and unless Ruben Amorim can also improve his midfield options then they will remain a long way from returning to Champions League football, let alone win their first title since the 2012/13 campaign. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. Brighton's box-to-box operative Carlos Baleba has been linked with a move to Old Trafford but the Seagulls are demanding more than £100m for him to leave the Amex Stadium so cheaper alternatives may be sought. Perhaps they should have sold captain Bruno Fernandes when Saudi clubs were linked with £100m enquiries or found a buyer for Casemiro who increasingly looks past his better days as both can be defensive liabilities. A positive is that United may have missed out on Champions League football by losing the Europa League final to Spurs in Bilbao but that should leave their squad fresher than most this term as they will have a reduced workload although they look skinny at a best price of 13/8 with Sky Bet to finish in the top five. The SpreadEx and Sporting Index offer of 21/10 for a top-four finish also looks underwhelming as does Betfred's 14/1 to finish as the top team in the North West which would mean amassing more points than Liverpool and neighbours Manchester City. The 25/1 with Ladbrokes and Coral to win the title is obviously a ridiculous non-starter so United fans seeking a pre-season flutter should take the 16/1 with bet365 for them to win the FA Cup or take 12/1 with the same firm, Ladbrokes, Coral and others to lift the Carabao Cup and pray for favourable draws as a bare minimum in both competitions. Leeds United made hard work of it in the end but they were easily the most impressive club in the Championship last season and deserved to be promoted as title-holders. They have signed well this summer and appeal at 8/11 with William Hill, Betfred and Bresbet to stay up. Even better is the 5/6 with Betfred to be the top promoted club which will cash even if they do go straight back down. Brighton are unfortunate not to be playing European football this season and if they can keep their better players between now and the transfer deadline – and enjoy a tad more luck with injuries – they look a lock-in to finish in the top half of the Premier League at 10/11 with Betfred, especially as they drew eight times at the Amex Stadium. More Trending If just a few of those results can be turn into wins they could easily finish as high as sixth, where Aston Villa wound up just five points better off than the south coast side last term, at 11/2 with Paddy Power and Betfair.
