Old age pension: Is a major pension hike coming for senior citizens? Here's what we know

Economic Times06-08-2025
ET Online Old age pension hike The government confirmed that senior citizens aged 60-79 years receive a monthly pension of Rs 200, while those aged 80 and above receive Rs 500 per month under the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP). States/Union Territories (UTs) add Rs 50 to Rs 3,800 to the central government pension, bringing the total monthly pension to around Rs 1,000 in most cases.
Many pensioners, however, have enquired whether there is a proposal to increase the pension amount for senior citizens.
During a recent Lok Sabha session held on August 5, 2025, Member of Parliament Rajkumar Roat asked the following questions on old age pension.
CGHS beneficiaries: Hospital claims to be rejected without geo-tagged photo upload in these cases, revised rules issued ET Wealth Online breaks down the government's response to three key questions:
Question: Whether it is a fact that senior citizens aged 60 years and above are provided with a pension of Rs 200 per month and those aged 79 years and above receive Rs 500 per month under the National Social Assistance Programme. If so, the details thereof: The government responded in Parliament and said, "The central pension under the Old Age Pension Scheme of the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) is Rs 200 per month per beneficiary from 60 to 79 years of age and Rs 500 per month per beneficiary from 80 years onwards. As per the guidelines of NSAP, the states/UTs are encouraged to provide a top-up amount of at least an equivalent amount to the assistance provided by the central government so that the beneficiaries could get a decent level of assistance. At present, states/UTs are adding top-up amounts ranging from Rs 50 to Rs 3,800 per month per beneficiary under the old-age pension scheme of NSAP, resulting in an average monthly pension of around Rs 1,000 in most of the states/UTs."
Question: The total funds released for old-age pensions under the said programme during the last five years, state-wise, particularly district- and category-wise in Rajasthan; The government responded in Parliament and said, "Under NSAP, funds are released to the states/UTs, which have the responsibility of implementation of the scheme, including further disbursal of pension to beneficiaries in districts/blocks/villages/towns. State-wise, total funds released under the old-age pension scheme during the last five years are given at Annexure-I. There was no separate allocation of funds for SC and ST beneficiaries under NSAP before 2021-22. From 2021-22, SC and ST beneficiaries are identified among the existing beneficiaries of NSAP, and funds are being allocated/released under SC and ST heads. Category-wise funds released under the old-age pension scheme during the last five years to the state of Rajasthan are given at Annexure-II."
Question: Whether the central government proposes to increase the pension for senior citizens aged 60 to 79 years to Rs 1,000 per month and for those aged above 79 years to Rs 1,500 per month; and if so, the time by which it is likely to be completed, and if not, the reasons therefor? The government replied in Parliament that it is not currently considering any such proposal.

Cars, Mobile Phones, Computers. What May Get Cheaper In New GST System

New Delhi: An overhaul of the Goods and Services Tax, or GST, framework - hailed as "next-generation" by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech ast week - is expected to slash prices of daily-use items by rationalising and reducing the number of brackets under which various goods are taxed. The revision is also expected to lower taxes on passenger vehicles and two-wheelers. Sources told NDTV last week five per cent and 18 per cent brackets have been proposed, and goods earlier taxed under others, i.e., 12 and 28 per cent, will now be shifted to one of these. Specifically, sources said the government plans to cut tax on 90 per cent of all goods currently attracting 28 per cent GST and drop these products into the 18 per cent bracket. A similarly large chunk of goods now taxed at 12 per cent will face reduced levies - five per cent only. The five per cent bracket will include 'daily-use' items, the government had said. In addition, there will be a special 'sin tax' of 40 per cent on certain items, including tobacco products. There will be only five to seven goods in this list, sources said. NDTV Explains | GST Reforms Coming Soon. How You Will Benefit These already attract higher levies. Chewing tobacco, for example, faces a 160 per cent cess and cigarettes are taxed through a mix of GST, cess and National Calamity Contingent Duty. Also, certain other items, such as those produced by labour-intensive and export-oriented industries, like diamonds and precious stones, will attract tax per existing rates. And finally, petroleum products will continue outside the GST framework. The expected consumption boost from this rationalisation, to be confirmed after the GST Council meets in September, is expected to offset around Rs 50,000 crore in revenue loss. So what will become cheaper? Daily-use items will become cheaper. But what these are is unclear at this time. In July sources told NDTV these could include items from toothpaste to umbrellas and small household appliances, like sewing machines, pressure cookers, and small washing machines. Daily use items like toothpaste are expected to become cheaper (File). Bicycles, readymade garments (priced over Rs 1,000), and footwear (between Rs 500 and Rs 1,000) may also be included, as could vaccines, ceramic tiles, and agricultural tools. So too will mobile phones and computers (necessary items in today's digital world), hair oil, processed foods, and stationery items for school children like geometry boxes and notebooks. READ | GST Relief For Middle Class? Cheaper Toothpaste, Utensils, Clothes, Shoes As an aside, India's multi-tier structure sees essential goods and services, including fruits and vegetables, some types of grain and some dairy products, and education charged nil GST. And what falls under 18 per cent slab? Televisions, air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, and aerated water, as well as some goods used in the construction industry, like ready-mix concrete and cement, will likely be on the new 18 per cent GST list. What about cars and bikes? At present passenger vehicles are subject to a GST of 28 per cent plus a compensation cess extending to 22 per cent, based on engine capacity, length, and body type. Electric cars are taxed at five per cent with no compensation cess. For two-wheelers the rate is 28 per cent. There is no compensation cess for models with an engine capacity up to 350cc, while those over that threshold pay a three per cent cess. Mid-sized and luxury passenger vehicles attract over 40 and nearly 50 per cent tax at this time. The revised GST structure eliminates the 28 per cent category, which means cars and bikes will most likely drop to the new 18 per cent bracket, making them at least 10 per cent cheaper. The Nifty Auto index jumped 4.61 per cent Monday morning on these expectations. The full list of which product faces what GST will, of course, only be released much later. The GST overhaul - and the resultant spending, the government hopes - will also likely further boost economic growth, particularly after a big thumbs-up from global ratings agency Standard and Poor. S&P upgraded India's credit rating for the first time in nearly two decades, bumping the country to BBB from BBB- with a stable outlook, and completely invaliding United States President Donald Trump's eyebrow-raising 'India is a dead economy' remark.

He noted that indigenous semiconductor chips by year-end: Domestically manufactured chips are expected to enter the market before the end of 2025, supporting India's electronics manufacturing and reducing its dependence on imports. Former finance minster Buggana Rajendranath lashes out at state's false claims on GST revenue

VIJAYAWADA: Former finance minister Buggana Rajendranath has lashed out at the state govt for making false claims about the GST collections growth rate in the state. He said that state govt's claims demonstrate the extent to which it can stoop to misrepresent a depressing result to make it appear as a stupendous success. Speaking to media here on Monday, Buggana said that the govt stated that GST revenues projected in the budget for FY 2025-26 at Rs. 27,477.15 crores and the GST revenues for the first four months of current fiscal were Rs. 16,754 crores. 'The govt apparently celebrates this extraordinary performance that could demonstrate 61% accomplishment of target for the year insofar as GST revenues are concerned. However, the truth is far away from what govt claims," said Buggana. He said that the CAG monthly key indicators conveys that the GST revenues for the first 4 months of this financial year are Rs. 16,754.91 crores. However, the CAG report also conveys that this figure includes receipts on account of CGST as part of State's share in central taxes. This does not reflect the performance of the State. 'If Centre's share is removed, the actual SGST (State GST) revenues received by the State government during the first four months of this financial year is only Rs. 10,769.55 crores," explained Buggana. He said that the state govt had actually projected the GST revenues for the current fiscal at Rs. 40,718.12 crores, but not Rs.27477 crore. 'Therefore, the % of accomplishment during the first 4 months is only 26.45% (Rs. 10,769.55 crores of Rs. 40,718.12 crores). Going by the budgeted figure, the SGST revenues for the first 4 months in FY 2025-26 should have been Rs. 13,571 crores, against this, the achievement is only Rs. 10,769.55 crores," said Buggana. He criticised the state govt for shamelessly boasting of achievement despite poor performance. He said that the SGST revenues during the first four months of this financial year 2025-26 is Rs. 10,769.55 crores is lesser than the SGST revenues during the corresponding period of last financial year which is Rs. 10,868.09 crores. 'When we compare the year-on-year performance, the SGST revenues have reported a negative growth of -0.91%," said Buggana. The CAG figures convey another important aspect, the sales tax revenues another important indicator of consumption in the State demonstrated a year-on-year growth of only 0.78%, during the first 4 months of FY 2025-26. Another aspect is that the aggregate of the State's own tax revenues and non-tax revenues estimated for FY 2025-26 as per budget documents is Rs. 1,27,702.77 crores and as per CAG report, from which state achieved only Rs. 29,511.03 crores, translating to an achievement of only 23.11%. 'Going by the budget figure, the actual State's own revenue receipt during the first 4 months should have been Rs. 42,563 crores. However, the receipts remained just around Rs. 29,511 crores, which shows poor performance of the state,' said former finance minister.
