Birbhum SP moves Calcutta HC against NCW summons in Anubrata Mondal case

Indian Express08-07-2025
The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Birbhum district on Tuesday moved the Calcutta High Court, challenging a summons issued to him by the National Commission for Women (NCW).
The summons is linked to a case involving TMC leader Anubrata Mondal, who was allegedly heard hurling 'unspeakably abusive language' at a police officer in a viral audio clip.
According to the counsel for SP Amandeep, the Commission is 'interfering with the investigation' by directing the addition of specific IPC sections and seeking the production of the case diary. The NCW had also summoned the officer to appear in person at its Delhi office.
The matter was mentioned before Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, who granted permission for it to be listed. It is likely to be heard on Wednesday.
Speaking to The Indian Express, NCW member Archana Majumdar said: 'It is the Commission's mandate to intervene in cases involving violations of women's modesty or rights. We found that our advisory was not complied with in the action taken report sent to us. The SP was expected to appear in person to clarify the situation. As he had earlier cited prior engagements, we had rescheduled the date. Now that the matter is before the High Court, we will act as per the court's directive.'
The SP was initially directed to appear before the Commission on July 1. However, he responded to the notice on June 28, stating that due to law-and-order duties through the first week of July, he would be unable to travel and requested to attend the hearing virtually.
Following this, the NCW issued a second notice on July 2, directing him to appear in person on July 14 at 12 noon at its New Delhi headquarters.
In its letter, the NCW termed the allegations 'grave' and said the matter required the 'highest level of institutional accountability and transparency'. The Commission said that no further extensions would be granted. If the SP is unable to attend due to documented law-and-order exigencies, either the Additional SP or the SDPO of Bolpur must appear with all relevant documents and records, it said.

A press conference was held by the Leader of the Opposition, to which the Election Commission responded, but we know what kind of responses those were. The Election Commission did not answer even a single question," she added. Man gets life for burning alive wife in 2019

Agra: Relying on the dying declaration of a woman, a court in Etah sentenced a 38-year-old man to life imprisonment for killing his 28-year-old wife six years back. The court imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on the convict, failure to pay will invite an additional one-month jail term. In Aug 2019, Nandini was finishing her household chores when Sukhveer Singh (then 32) started beating her over a domestic dispute. When she resisted, he poured kerosene on her and, with the intent to kill her, set her ablaze. Hearing her screams, Nandini's brothers-in-law, Amarpal and Rahispal, rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. They took her to a hospital in Saifai where she succumbed to her injuries. Police said, "Nandini and Sukhveer got married in 2011. Soon after marriage, he began harassing and assaulting her over trivial issues. On Aug 13, Sukhveer set Nandini ablaze at 1.30pm while she was doing household chores. She died during treatment, and the body was sent for post-mortem. Based on the victim's statement, a case was registered at Aliganj police station under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 326A (causing grievous hurt using acid or corrosive substance), and 307 (attempt to murder). After investigation, a chargesheet was filed under relevant IPC sections, including 302 (murder)." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Though key witnesses turned hostile during the trial, the court relied on Nandini's last words and evidence found during the investigation to convict Sukhveer. Additional district government counsel (ADGC) Sunil Kukar Bhardwaj, "The court of Special Judge (SC/ST Act) Ashok Kumar on Wednesday said the punishment should be proportionate to the crime committed. The use of fire as a weapon signifies a depraved level of cruelty. The mitigating circumstances, such as being a first-time offender, pale in comparison to the gravity of the act. Considering evidence presented during the trial, the victim's dying declaration, and relevant legal principles governing sentencing, the court sentenced him to life in jail." The co-accused in the case, Mangaldas Patel and witness (victim) Atmaram Patel, passed away during the pendency of the trial. After hearing the submissions, additional sessions judge H G Pandya observed: "The case involves an internal political party dispute that occurred 28 years ago, and the victim, Atmarambhai Maganbhai Patel, has passed away... The public prosecutor's request to withdraw the case appears to be made with bona fide intentions, and sufficient consideration has been given to withdrawing the prosecution. Therefore, considering the records and the nature of the offense, it is appropriate to grant permission to withdraw the prosecution under Section 321 of CrPC in the interest of justice. " Earlier, on Jan 30, 2018, a metropolitan court had dropped a related criminal case against 41 BJP workers and leaders, including VHP leader Pravin Togadia and BJP MLA from Daskroi, Babu Jamna Patel.
