S.F. theater director resigns after anti-predator group posts alleged ‘catch' video
The former executive director, Nick Olivero, did not immediately respond to the Chronicle's requests for comment on Monday.
'A private citizen's social media accounts personally accused Nick Olivero of sending inappropriate digital messages to someone who presented as a minor,' Boxcar Theatre said in a statement on its Facebook and Instagram accounts on Monday.
'We are shocked and appalled by these allegations and take them very seriously,' the statement said. 'Thankfully, we have expert leadership ready to assume executive duties and keep Boxcar Theatre's mission moving forward.'
The social media account making the accusations, People v. Preds, had more than 67,000 followers on X and more than 24,000 on Facebook as of Monday. It referred to Olivero as 'Catch 540.'
Around the country, a group of often unaffiliated groups has in recent years engaged in what is often called 'predator catching,' seeking to trick online targets into meeting with people pretending to be children and then filming the encounters. The phenomenon resembles the 20-year-old NBC show 'To Catch a Predator.'
While these groups sometimes work with law enforcement and have prompted arrests, the methods are controversial, in part because the groups may be partially motivated by the prospect of making money or gaining online fame. Proving the cases in court can also be difficult.
The Aug. 8 thread by People v. Preds contains a video showing a person strongly resembling Olivero walking out of a grocery store, into a parking garage and onto a street. The vigilante group said the store is in San Diego.
A person holding a camera follows the man, saying, 'Yo, Nick, I have pictures of you, bro. I can turn it into the cops.' Then: 'You're here to meet a 14-year-old kid, dude,' and 'This ain't gonna look too good, dude.'
Another video in the same thread shows what People v. Preds described as a text conversation with Olivero. One side identifies himself as Tim, who says he's 'bout to be 15' and that he 'can't put 14 on grindr :(.'
David Oates, a spokesperson for Boxcar's board of directors, told the Chronicle that the board had planned to meet Monday to discuss Olivero's status with the company, but that Olivero resigned before they could do so.
Managing Director Stefani Pelletier and Executive Producer Laura Drake Chambers will take over Olivero's duties.
The conduct alleged in the vigilante group's posts appears to be unrelated to any activity by Boxcar Theatre.
Boxcar Theatre was founded in 2005 and built a reputation for daring, gritty work. It had planned to mount the Halloween-themed show 'Nightmare: House on Franklin St.' at the Haas-Lilienthal House beginning in September, but that show has been canceled, Oates said.
'The company is working on a new haunted house production concept,' he said.
The Chronicle last year investigated allegations of bullying, sexual harassment, racism, violence, wage theft, retaliation and more at the San Francisco theater company, which produced the long-running but troubled immersive, Prohibition-era show 'The Speakeasy.'

Jake Paul smashes his brother Logan's lavish wedding cake in bizarre clip
Jake Paul posted a bizarre video of himself smashing his brother's wedding cake this week. His older brother, YouTuber-turned-WWE star Logan Paul, 30, tied the knot with long-term girlfriend, Danish model Nina Agdal, 33, at a lavish Lake Como wedding on Friday. During the ceremony, his younger brother, a pro boxer and content creator, said he was brought to tears, sharing a post saying, 'I've seriously been crying.' But Jake, who starred in the Netflix biopic 'The Problem Child,' is known as a bit of a troublemaker, and it didn't take long for the sentimental mood to turn to chaos. As the guests partied long into the night at the no-expenses-spared reception, Jake bizarrely ended up destroying his brother's extravagant cake. Sharing a clip on his socials, captioned, 'Jake or cake?' the influencer showed himself squaring up and punching the giant, three-tiered dessert, alongside his brother. In the background, Sister Sledge's 'We Are Family' plays as the pair continue to bash the cake together, with sponge pieces flying everywhere and chunks dropping to the floor. The cake became so unsteady at one point that a guest had to come over and help steady the table it was on. 5 Jake Paul wrecked his brother's wedding cake in a wild viral moment. @jakepaul/Instagram 5 The bizarre stunt split viewers right down the middle. @jakepaul/Instagram At the end of the clip, Jake appears satisfied with his efforts and cheers with his hands in the air before sharing a long hug with his brother. Guests gathered around the spectacle, phones in hand, egging them on, but Logan's new wife, Agdal, was nowhere to be seen. From one angle, it looks as if the cake hasn't even been cut yet. The general sentiment online was, 'Why…?' 5 The groom, Logan Paul, pulled his younger brother in for a hug after ruining the cake. @jakepaul/Instagram 'What is this? What am I watching? Someone is marrying this?' someone asked. 'Such a weird party,' another claimed. 'Are they marrying … each other?' a different user wondered. Others called it 'embarrassing,' 'a circus,' and 'a red flag.' Meanwhile, some compared the nuptials to a 'fancy frat party,' and one pointed out, 'Their performance of masculinity is very intriguing, to say the least.' 5 Logan Paul and Danish model Nina Agdal tied the knot last week in a lavish ceremony in Italy. Instagram/Jake Paul 'This is proof that money can never buy class,' chimed in one critic, while someone else said, 'Wasting food while children are starving in Africa …' Many commenters also sympathised with Agdal, with one saying, 'I know she's crying in a room by herself right now.' 'If I were a bride, I would be livid,' someone else claimed. 'Divorce, babe. Divorce,' another urged. 'His wife probably picked out that design, curated the flavours for the wedding, paid well over 5k – and for what? So a man could ruin it all,' read another comment. 5 Logan appeared to back Jake's stunt, sharing a professional shot of the cake-smashing moment on Instagram. @jakepaul/Instagram Others expressed sympathy for the pastry chef who made the cake. It's unknown who that was though, and in an Instagram carousel with photos of the cake, Logan notably didn't tag the cake maker, despite tagging all other vendors from the day. The wedding planner, @lakecomoweddings, also left the cake vendor off their Instagram coverage of the day. The wedding comes two years after WWE star Paul proposed to Agdal in Italy. 'Today is the day I ask the love of my life to marry me,' the YouTube personality said in a video shared in 2023. 'Fourteen months ago, I fell in love with the most beautiful human being I've ever seen in my life, and I have been waiting for this day ever since.' They welcomed their first child, Esme, in September 2024. After the wedding, Logan took to Instagram to gush about Agdal. 'God delivered in every way. This wedding was the perfect way to kick off the rest of our lives @ninaagdal,' he said. 'I love you and our beautiful baby girl Esme so so much. Let's make more babies.'
