Pawan Kalyan's twin warning to police: Rohingyas taking jobs from locals; southern states vulnerable to terror

Indian Express20-05-2025

Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan said on Tuesday that southern states are vulnerable targets for terrorists, and that the migration of Rohingyas into the state is causing unemployment. Speaking at Vijayawada, the Jana Sena Party chief said that he has written to the state police to maintain strict vigil against 'internal threats'.
'As much as soldiers are protecting the country safely on the borders, it is crucial that the police department is also constantly vigilant in internal security within the country. Rohingya migration is causing unemployment and (posing an) internal security threat. Some people in the system are involved in helping them settle down permanently here,' he said.
'Police should be more vigilant than the soldiers on the borders. We know that southern states are sensitive targets of terrorists. Surveillance should be kept on the movements of strangers arriving on the coast. I have written to the DGP to maintain strict vigil along the coast,' he said.
'Heinous attacks in the past prove that the southern states are a sensitive target for terrorists. The terrorist attacks in Coimbatore and Hyderabad areas still make your heart skip a beat,' he said.
He said he wrote to the police to be extra vigilant after a person with alleged terrorist connections was traced to the state, referring to a joint operation conducted by the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh police.
'I suggested that strict action be taken against those who support terrorism, in coordination with the administrative machinery. If proper surveillance is maintained, especially in the case of migrants, future incidents can be prevented. There is also a need to increase continuous monitoring and surveillance in the coastal area. In the past, there were some reports of people coming from outside on boats in Kakinada. Keep a watch on who is landing on our coasts,' he said.
The JSP chief said there should be a focus on Rohingya migration. 'In the past, Rohingya migrants came to many parts of Andhra Pradesh from West Bengal. Especially in 2017-18, a large number came to various parts of the state from Kolkata to work as goldsmiths. The roots of the Rohingya are in Myanmar. With their migration, the local youth are facing the problem of unemployment. The main demand is jobs for locals in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh… However, the Rohingyas are getting ration, Aadhaar and voter cards to establish permanent residence here after coming from across the country. They are doing jobs and businesses that should belong to our youth,' he said.
'Our system is negligent in establishing permanent residence for the Rohingyas. How are they getting Aadhaar, voter and ration cards? It is clear who is giving them. It is understood that some people in our system are cooperating with them. Everyone should be made aware of how the Rohingyas are becoming citizens of this country and robbing us of our opportunities,' Kalyan said.

Yunus Backed By Terrorists, Rohingya Corridor Ploy To Sell St Martin's Island: Sheikh Hasina

Last Updated: Bangladesh's ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that interim advisor Muhammad Yunus is undermining Bangladesh's access to the seas. Bangladesh's ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said interim government advisor Muhammad Yunus ascent to his current role was backed by terrorists and under his interim rule there has been a rise in crimes, violence is the norm and there is a ploy to 'sell the nation's sovereignty". 'Women feel unsafe in our cities. During Eid, foreigners visited Bangladesh and people from urban centres went to villages to celebrate Eid with their families. Now no one goes to rural Bangladesh fearing they will be robbed by terrorists who have overseen the ascent of Yunus," Hasina said. The leader who is currently living in exile in India said that Yunus is taking steps that threaten the sovereignty of Bangladesh, referring to the 'Rohingya corridor" proposal. Hasina said Yunus is backing the 'Rohingya corridor" proposal in a bid to sell St. Martin's Island and undermine Bangladesh's access to the seas. The idea originated from a UN suggestion during Secretary-General António Guterres's visit and was later discussed by Nobel Peace laureate Yunus. 'Selling the nation, selling and undermining our access to the sea is what he is doing. This Rohingya corridor is a ploy to sell St Martin's Island and undermine our access to the seas," Hasina said in a speech streamed live on Facebook. Months before accusing US of attempting to undermine Bangladesh's sovereignty by seeking control of the St. Martin Island, ousted Bangladesh ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina had warned that a 'white man' came to tempt her with an offer. She also said that her re-election process, in the 2024 general elections that the US and the West raised concerns about, would have been smoother if she allowed a foreign country to build an airbase inside Bangladeshi territory. Hasina told Awami League workers August last year that she 'could have remained in power if I had left St. Martin and the Bay of Bengal to America', according to a report by The Print. The ousted Prime Minister said Yunus has failed to stem the influx of refugees and the numbers of refugees has only swelled. Hasina, her rival Khaleda Zia of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and t he Bangladesh Army have warned the corridor could become a 'foreign‑controlled buffer zone". The Army Chief Wakar-Uz-Zaman labeled it a potential 'bloody corridor" and demanded decisions be made only by an elected government. Under mounting pressure from the military, opposition parties, and public opinion, Yunus's interim government backpedaled. Officials clarified that no corridor deal had been finalized. Bangladesh hosts 1.3 million Rohingya refugees in temporary settlements like Cox's Bazar. In her speech, Hasina also said that members of her party, the Awami League, are brutally killed in broad daylight and Yunus has failed to protect the Bangladeshi citizens. She also said that under Yunus the nation has lost its status as a garment exporter and that he has been involved in corruption and has assumed his current role in order to fill his coffers. Procedural reforms, technology upgrade under way to strengthen election exercise, says EC official

The Election Commission of India (EC) is in the process of implementing several technology-level changes and on-the-ground procedural reforms aimed at strengthening election integrity, boosting elector participation and improving voter convenience, said its Deputy Director P. Pawan on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. While several improvements were targeted at electors, who were the building blocks of democracy, the EC has also initiated pan-India all-party meetings at the CEO/DEO/ERO level and interactions with the heads of national and State political parties, the deputy director at EC's media division said at an interaction with select media persons. 'This approach of proactively engaging with political parties is a paradigm shift,' Mr. Pawan said. On the technology front, an upgraded digitisation effort to build an ECINET platform is under way to facilitate rapid dissemination of VTR (voter turnout) figures, other electoral data and statistical reports. It will feature an integrated dashboard that can replace at least 40 different apps/websites and provide all election-related information at a single point. The platform is being beta tested and is likely to be launched before the Bihar elections, expected later this year, Mr. Pawan said. A new mechanism for unique Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) is also being put in place. This will largely eliminate duplication of EPIC numbers arising from increase in the proportion of voters that led to situations of different voters sharing identical alpha-numeric sequence. 'However, the instances of EPIC number duplication have been found to be minuscule,' Mr. Pawan said. Meanwhile, the EC is also exploring modalities of EPIC-Aadhaar linkage to avoid duplication or abuse. Technical consultations are in progress in this regard. According to Mr. Pawan, another measure was to break a nearly two-decade hiatus in conducting a special summary revision ahead of byelections scheduled in four places this month. 'While usually, these exercises are conducted annually, the law provides for undertaking a revision ahead of a byelection,' he said. The other changes, among the set of 23 new initiatives launched since Gyanesh Kumar took charge as Chief Election Commissioner earlier this year, were to introduce mobile phone deposit boxes at polling stations and reduce the number of electors per polling booth from 1,500 to 1,200 per booth to ease crowding, the EC official said. 'The phone deposit facility follows an assessment that barring the device was a likely factor dissuading people turning out to vote,' the official added. Another measure is to directly obtain particulars of death registration from the data base of the Registrar General to verify and update the electoral roll eliminating the need for the bereaved kin to submit Form 7 and to accentuate critical information in voter slips. The establishment of additional polling booths are envisaged in high-rises and residential colonies. Structured capacity building workshops under the auspices of the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) in Delhi have been initiated for booth-level agents of political parties with a priority on the States that would enter the election cycle next. Booth-level officers are being assigned a standard photo id card while engaging in door-to-door visits. Also, a legal defence team is being constituted to disseminate outcomes of various writ challenges relating to the electoral processes via media platforms, he said. P. Jawahar, Chief Electoral Officer, M. Adarsh, Deputy CEO and other Elections Department officials participated.
