Established order prevails at Club World Cup as minnows make little impact
MIAMI, June 27 (Reuters) - The occasional threat of an upset result at the Club World Cup handed hope to the minnows of the world game but in the end the established order prevailed at the conclusion of the first round of the tournament in the U.S.
All but three of the teams through to the knockout stages are from Europe and South America with the field for the last-16 settled after the last group-stage matches on Thursday.
Among the last to qualify was Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal, but the Riyadh-based side is littered with players expensively purchased from European clubs like the Portugal internationals Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo, former Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly and ex-Brazil international Malcom.
Also through are Monterrey from Mexico and Inter Miami, where Lionel Messi is the kingpin in a side filled with former Barcelona stalwarts.
But for the rest, it was a disappointing return from clubs from other continents.
Al-Hilal held Real Madrid to a draw in their opening game and won a decisive clash with Pachuca of Mexico on Thursday to advance, but it was one of only two matches won by Asian clubs in the first round out of a total of 12 played.
Africa had similarly disappointing statistics. Its four representatives went home with a combined total of two wins in 12 outings.
'It is a big step up for the players,' said Miguel Cardoso of South Africa champions Mamelodi Sundowns, who collected four points but still finished third in Group F.
'The level of competition is just that little bit higher than what the players are used to,' the coach added.
'These experiences will stay with us hopefully for the coming games we play,' said Seattle Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer as his side make a quick return to Major League Soccer action at Austin on Saturday after playing Atletico Madrid, Botafogo and European champions Paris St Germain.
'There were a lot of similarities in the style and approach to the game between us and the powerful clubs we played against. But you have to factor in that their players are playing at a much higher level.'
Egypt's Al Ahly and Tunisia's Esperance also brought plenty of fans and helped create atmosphere in the large stadiums but went home without achieving their ambition of progressing to the last-16.
'The moment that you drop a little bit your level against this quality of opponents, you pay a price,' added Jose Riveiro, coach of Cairo giants Al Ahly who had a rollicking 4-4 draw with Porto in their last group game.
But he said competing at the Club World Cup was a special experience.
'The players have the opportunity to showcase their talent and a fantastic platform to do it.
'It's a special occasion for sure something that, well, you don't always have the opportunity to be involved in,' Riveiro said.

"We do wish him well and I understand the emotions of supporters who were disappointed and we were disappointed too but it is overshadowed by my wonderful memories of him. Rob Key never doubted Jofra Archer's desire to return to Test cricket
Stress fractures in his right elbow and lower back have conspired to keep Archer on 13 Test caps since February 2021 and repeated setbacks could have seen him throw in his lot on the franchise circuit. Key, England's managing director of men's cricket, suspects Archer would have been in high demand and the prospect is attractive because of a much lighter workload, required to bowl only four overs a game. Archer has a deal with Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, where he broke his thumb this year to derail hopes of a much-anticipated Test return for England at the start of the summer. But Key was always certain Archer, who is in England's squad for the second Test against India, was destined to play red-ball cricket again and argued he could now establish himself as an all-time great. 'Jofra has always been adamant that he's wanted to play Test cricket,' said Key, speaking at a Rothesay media event in London. 'He's had probably more so than anyone in the game… he could have been tempted to go down other routes and he's never once done it. I've always had faith in Jofra. 'He could be one of the best bowlers we've had – and you only do that in Test cricket. Hopefully for the next few years, we'll be fortunate to see Jofra have a chance to stake that claim.' Key was coy about whether Archer would play at Edgbaston next week or in the third Test at Lord's, starting in a fortnight, having only bowled 18 overs in his first first-class match in four years. Archer bowled economically and at high pace in taking one for 32 at Durham this week but his coach at Sussex, Paul Farbrace, an ex-England assistant, believes the paceman needs more time in county cricket. 'We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.' Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue were the three frontline seamers, alongside captain Ben Stokes, to help England secure a five-wicket win over India and go 1-0 up in the five-match series. Jamie Overton and Sam Cook are also pushing for Test call-ups while Gus Atkinson and Mark Wood are optimistic of being involved at some point against Shubman Gill's tourists. 'There was a time where you thought it was all about Wood and Archer and we needed that X-factor pace – but now we've got a few of them,' added Key. 'Jofra is another piece in that puzzle. 'We don't know who's the next great England opening partnership because there's a number of those options that could be the mainstay of England bowlers for years. In light of these eye-watering numbers, ex-Man United goalkeeper David De Gea could not help but share his reaction online. Under Ronaldo's post on X announcing his new contract, the Spaniard wrote ironically: 'And playing for free,' followed by a laughing emoji and an eyes emoji. De Gea and Ronaldo's were team-mates during the latter's second spell at Old Trafford. Both men have since left United in acrimonious circumstances. Ronaldo fell out of favour under former manager Erik ten Hag and orchestrated his own exit through a bombshell interview. On the other hand, De Gea departed as a free agent in the summer of 2023, and was replaced by Andre Onana. In addition to the ludicrous sums involved in Ronaldo's deal, The Sun claim that Ronaldo and his family will have 16 people working full-time for them. These include three drivers, four housekeepers, two chefs, three gardeners and four security people - who will be paid for by Al-Nassr at a cost of around £1.4m. Furthermore, there is £4m for use of a private jet, as well as the promise of sponsorship deals with Saudi companies which could reach £60m.
