Barcelona legend Xavi's application for Indian football coaching job was a hoax, AIFF says
The AIFF's national team director told The Times of India on Thursday that Xavi's name was on the list of applicants. The report also quoted an AIFF technical committee member saying the his candidacy was deemed too expensive to pursue.
"The AIFF received an email furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the email applications were not genuine," the AIFF said in a statement.
It had not been previously reported that the AIFF had also received an application purporting to be from Manchester City manager Guardiola.
The AIFF Technical Committee said it had reviewed 170 applications for the Indian men's head coach role, narrowing the list to 10 before short-listing three candidates.
The AIFF sacked former India manger Igor Stimac in June last year before appointing Spaniard Manolo Marquez, who left the job this month and returned to his role as coach of Indian Super League team FC Goa.

Anil Ambani, Chairman of the Reliance Group, is facing fresh legal trouble as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a lookout circular against him in connection with a suspected loan fraud worth Rs30 million (Dh1.2 million), according to a report by NDTV citing official sources. The move comes on the same day the businessman was summoned by the agency for questioning. He has been asked to appear before the ED on Tuesday (August 5). A lookout circular is typically issued by Indian authorities to prevent individuals from fleeing the country to dodge legal action. It is distributed to all immigration checkpoints — including airports and seaports — and alerts authorities to detain the individual if they attempt to leave Indian borders. The case under investigation involves loans granted by Yes Bank to Reliance Group companies between 2017 and 2019. The ED suspects that roughly Rs30,000,000 million (Dh1.2 million) was diverted from these loans. Officials believe there may have been a quid pro quo, as payments were allegedly made to Yes Bank's promoters shortly before the loans were approved. The ED on July 24 launched widespread raids at over 50 locations linked to the case. These raids, conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, reportedly continued for three days. Despite the mounting scrutiny, Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure issued statements to stock exchanges asserting that the ED's raids have had "absolutely no impact" on their business operations, financial health, or stakeholders. "The media reports appear to pertain to allegations concerning transactions of Reliance Communications Limited (RCOM) or Reliance Home Finance Limited (RHFL) which are over 10 years old," the companies had said. Expanding its investigation, the ED has also started probing a separate case involving an alleged fake bank guarantee worth Rs682 million (Dh28.7 million). According to officials, a company called Biswal Tradelink — which allegedly managed a network of shell companies — issued a fraudulent bank guarantee to the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The scam reportedly involved a spoofed domain (' made to closely resemble that of the State Bank of India (' which was then used to send fake emails and documents meant to mislead SECI and other entities.

Indigo issues statement after viral video of man slapping other passenger sparks outrage
After a physical altercation took place on board one of its flights, Indian airline Indigo has issued a statement "condemning such actions". The airline said it is aware of the incident, and that "such unruly behaviour is completely unacceptable". Following the spat, the airline identified the individual involved as "unruly" and handed him over to the security authorities upon arrival, it said in the statement. Indigo also informed appropriate regulatory agencies, and its crew "acted in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures." Indigo said it condemned "compromising the safety and dignity of its passengers and crew, and remains committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment on all our flights". A viral video shows a man slapping another passenger, who was reportedly having a panic attack, according to social media users. The video is doing the rounds on various social platforms, as several commenters expressed shock and called on airlines to ensure safety during travel. Several, including politicians and journalists, have also called for the man to be put on a no-fly list.

India hit back against England on another remarkable day in 5th Test
India roared back into contention on an exhilarating day two of the final Test on Friday as their seamers restricted England to a 23-run lead after the hosts had threatened to run away with a match that the tourists need to win to square the series. After mopping up India's brittle tail in less than 30 minutes in the morning, openers Zac Crawley and Ben Duckett raced to 92-0 in 12 overs in a blistering return of Bazball. However, continuing the back and forth theme of the entire series, India responded as their bowlers ran in relentlessly to peg England back to 247. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal then scored quickly in a potentially awkward last 90 minutes, ending unbeaten on 51 with India closing on 75-2, 52 runs ahead to leave the pivotal match fascinatingly poised. Another fabulously undulating day began with India resuming at 204-6 but soon skittled for 224 as pace bowler Gus Atkinson took five wickets in his first Test since May. It was an all-too-familiar collapse by the tourists this summer as Karun Nair fell lbw for 57 and Washington Sundar was caught for 26. Atkinson then bowled Mohammed Siraj and had Prasidh Krishna caught behind, both for ducks, to finish with 5-33. England set about their reply in their usual, swashbuckling fashion, exemplified by Duckett's extraordinary "reverse hook" for six off Akash Deep.
