Britain's oldest pop band to split after farewell show at Glastonbury

Independent22-03-2025
The Searchers, the longest-running band in pop history, have decided to call it a day after 68 years.
The group rose to fame in the early Sixties as part of Liverpool 's Merseybeat scene, where they were contemporaries of The Beatles.
Yet they formed three years before the Fab Four, in 1957, beginning as a skiffle group and later sold millions of records, with hits such as their Jackie DeShannon cover 'When You Walk in the Room', their No 1 'Sweets for My Sweet', and their No 2 single 'Sugar and Spice'.
They announced this week that they plan on retiring after what will be their first and only show at Glastonbury Festival in June.
Speaking to The Guardian, guitarist John McNally, 83, and bassist and singer Frank Allen, 81, said they had decided to retire partly because of their age, but also because they were sick of driving up and down motorways in heavy traffic.
'Age slows you down a bit,' Allen, who joined the band in 1964, said. 'We did between 180 and 200 shows a year. But driving up and down the motorways is the hard part because the traffic is so much heavier than it ever was…
'There was never a problem with recovering from a show because that's the thing that brings you to life. We were always fit to do a show. It's just the driving up and down motorways.'
Original member McNally, who formed the band when he was 16, agreed: 'The traffic is now an absolute nightmare.'
Allen told The Independent last year that The Searchers initially decided to call it a day in 2019, after growing weary of non-stop touring.

'We thought, well, we've been doing this for six decades, about time to have a rest,' he said. 'We were getting on, we were well past retirement age and we'd been doing 200 shows a year up until that point.'
After five years of 'retirement' however, the band's jokes about a comeback tour became reality, and the consequent shows turned out to be 'a lot fun'.
'By the end of it, we finished on an epic night in Liverpool at the Philharmonic and it was probably the best night we've had of our careers,' Allen said. 'We were on such a high.'
Asked about the secret to The Searchers' longevity, he said it was down to being 'being a part of one of the most important periods in pop history'.
'If you made it during that period, people are never gonna forget you,' he said. 'We've influenced so many American names, from The Byrds to Tom Petty, Marshall Krenshaw, Bruce Springsteen. We've had our time in the sun.'
The band's current lineup comprises Allen, McNally, Spencer James and Richie Burns.
Allen said no one had asked them to play Glastonbury until now: 'No one's asked us. The Searchers are finally performing at the greatest music festival of them all. What a way to round off a tour and a career.'
The Searchers will appear on the Acoustic Stage at Glastonbury on 27 June. This year's festival is being headlined by Neil Young, Olivia Rodrigo and The 1975, with Rod Stewart in the Legends' Slot.

Inside Lucy Spraggan's marriage and X Factor judge who walked her down aisle

Lucy Spraggan has been roughing out the challenges of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins in the latest season. The former X Factor contestant gained the mass support of fans after openeing up about her sexual assault in 2012, and made us all wince when she tore her vulva on the show. Across the season she has also almost knocked a tooth out, fainted and landed face-first in the sea after attempting to jump from a helicopter into a boat. She was left with a black eye for her wedding day earlier this year when she tied the knot with Emilia Smith in a picturesque ceremony. They had been friends for more than a decade before their friendship blossomed into something more, and its been a whirlwind from there. Lucy and Emilia began dating in December 2023 after knowing each other for more than 10 years. They began dating after Lucy split with her ex-girlfriend, Evangelina. Emilia is a wedding and lifestyle photographer and, away from the camera, is a mental health advocate. Speaking to The Wedding Edition, Lucy said: 'We actually met more than a decade ago. She was going out with someone I knew, and we just became friends. 'We got really close over the last five or six years – I got sober in 2019 and that's when we started being more aligned.' She added that the couple had known for some time that they wanted to get married, and Lucy popped the question in March 2024. 'For the engagement, we realised quite early on that we wanted to get married to each other, so I organised a games night with all her family,' she continued. 'I made a Play-Doh ring and pretended to propose to her with that. She went 'Get down on your knee then!' and when I did, I actually had a proper ring.' Lucy wrote in an Instagram post after they got engaged: ''When you know you know'. That's the response we've heard the most over the last few weeks when Emilia & I have told our people that we are, in fact, getting married in June. 'That's a phrase I really thought I understood throughout my life, that I believed I had a full appreciation of but… It wasn't until I fell in love with my friend of 10 years that I truly felt it.' Lucy and Georgina tied the knot in June 2024, just months after getting engaged. Among the guests to see the couple tie the knot at Saltmarshe Hall, a historic country hotel in East Yorkshire, were Lauren, Ru Paul's Drag Race star Bimini Bon-Boulash, and Love Island star Adam Collard – not to mention Lucy's dog Steve dressed in a black bow tie. Emilia wore a stunning strapless white gown by Australian label Chosen by Kyha, while Lucy donned a crisp white suit from King & Allen. Lucy was walked down the aisle by former X-Factor judge Simon Cowell, whom she previously described as a surrogate parent to her. 'It was perfect,' Lucy said, talking about the big day. 'Simon and I were standing outside the door and my song started playing. I was already crying, and Simon definitely had a tear in his eye. I was linking arms with him but then I realised I was holding on to his arm. 'He kept saying, 'You're OK, you're all right'. Then when Emilia walked in with her dad I just sobbed,' she told Hello! magazine. Reflecting on the moment, Emilia also said Simon 'looked so proud'. Of being asked to walk Lucy down the aisle, Simon told the publication: 'I was very honoured to be asked to walk Lucy down the aisle. I considered it a very big deal. As soon as she asked me, I said yes. 'On the day I was actually quite nervous because l've never been asked before. And then very proud and happy and emotional. 'The best way of describing our relationship is that it feels like we've been friends for life.' Lucy was previously married to Georgina Gordon from 2016 to 2019. They began dating three years prior after meeting in a bar following Lucy's stint on The X-Factor. Lucy proposed to Georgina in 2015 during a romantic boat ride, telling OK! Magazine at the time: '[Georgina] didn't have a clue and she turned around and I was on one knee – it was amazing. 'I think I knew that she'd say yes, but it was still scary. 'I got a boat – she didn't know we were going on a boat, we went underneath Albert Bridge and her friends and family, her mum was on the bridge with all of her mates.' They tied the knot the following year, and in 2017, they announced they were trying for a baby. While undergoing fertility treatment, Lucy and Georgina became foster carers and welcomed 12 children into their home. In 2019, Lucy announced their split after 'six years of joy.' More Trending She wrote in a statement: 'It's with sadness to let you know that after nearly 6 years of joy, fun, and true love, Georgina and I have decided to part ways. 'We have shared the most amazing times and life together, and we are truly grateful for knowing love at its full capacity. 'We will continue on our paths as ultimate friends and dog Mums, united by the bond and memories we will always have. Lewis Capaldi reveals an A-list singer ghosted him after 'super' night out

Lewis Capaldi may be a celebrity, but even he has been ghosted… by another celeb! (Picture: Matt Baron/Shutterstock) Lewis Capaldi may be one of the biggest names in pop right now, but he's still susceptible to ghosting like the rest of us. The Someone You Loved hitmaker recently returned to the music scene after an extended break to focus on his mental health. Lewis came back with a bang, performing to thousands upon thousands of adoring fans at this year's Glastonbury Festival, having just dropped his latest single, Survive, in which he bravely sings about his struggles. And while he's back on the press circuit, ahead of kicking off his UK tour next month, Lewis has been lifting the lid on some of his showbiz friendships. Alas, when it comes to US megastar Justin Bieber, after an epic night out together, Lewis was met with radio silence. Speaking to Chris Stark for Capital Breakfast, the 28-year-old revealed he and Justin, 31, exchanged numbers at a star-studded bash, but he did not hear from the Baby singer again. The singer confessed that he was ignored by pop star Justin Bieber after a night out (Picture: Capital Breakfast) Lewis sent the Biebs a text, hoping to strike up a friendship (Picture: Capital Breakfast) 'It was amazing,' Lewis said of the event. 'There was famous people, Charli XCX was there, Justin Bieber was there. 'Justin Bieber comes over and said, 'Hey, man, what's going on?' And I said, 'You don't remember my name?' And he said, 'Of course I do, you're Lewis Capaldi'.' 'Me and Bieber had this super night together, like really lovely evening together,' Lewis continued. 'We didn't spend the night together, but we hung out and I'm like, 'me and the Biebs are gonna be best pals, this is huge.' 'And he's like, 'Man, make sure I get your number tomorrow.' And I was like, 'Me and the Biebs, this is huge!'' Unfortunately, Lewis didn't quite get the lovey-dovey response he was hoping for after sending a message of adoration to JB. 'If you're out there, Bieber, wherever you are, text me back, please' (Picture: Matt Baron/Shutterstock) Justin aired him! (Picture: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic) 'I text him maybe the most sucking-up-his-a**e text. I said, 'Just wanted to jump on, bro, last night was so special, great guy, so nice to hang out with you, such a dude.' 'He likes it and doesn't reply. So if you're out there, Bieber, wherever you are, text me back, please. Bieber aired me.' Lewis's recent comeback has been received extremely warmly by his fans, who sobbed as he, too, broke down on the Worthy Farm stage in 2023, unable to finish his set due to a Tourette's flare-up. At the time, he was still navigating living with the condition, apologising to the audience as they sang the lyrics for him. Ahead of his return this summer, the award-winning star was heavily rumoured to be the surprise performer, as cryptic signs promoting his new music appeared in various locations. But that doesn't mean Lewis wasn't nervous, as he recently confessed to 'convulsing' backstage at another secret gig before heading out for his first performance in two years. Lewis recently returned to music after a two-year break (Picture:) He was greeted by thousands of screaming fans as he played a surprise Glastonbury set (Picture: EPA) 'A few weeks prior to that show, we were playing in Chicago, and I had a very similar episode—probably even worse,' he told This Past Weekend with Theo Von. 'I couldn't come back and finish a song. I was backstage, convulsing and having this crazy panic attack. Way worse than what happened at Glastonbury (in 2023).' Fortunately, Lewis was able to power through his nerves and anxiety, which he has spoken openly about, to make it to Glasto, having admitted his breakdown in 2023 was probably 'the best thing that's ever happened' to him, as it meant he then had time to 'go and get help and fix [himself] for the next two years'. During his time out of the spotlight, Lewis has been going to therapy to learn how to manage his Tourette's, with which he was diagnosed in September 2022. He's also overhauled his physical health, having drastically reduced his alcohol intake and switched from antidepressants to antipsychotic medication, which he believes has made a difference. 'It's changed my life,' he said of his new meds. 'My anxiety levels are so low these days. I don't feel the stress.' Lewis broke down while on stage at Worthy Farm just two years ago due to a Tourette's flare-up (Picture: Oli Scarff/AFP via Getty Images) Lewis, who has therapy every week now, will hit the road on September 6 for his first tour show in Sheffield, concluding the sold-out run of limited shows in Dublin on September 30. After being forced to release more tickets due to astonishingly high demand, Lewis wrote on Instagram: 'honestly didn't expect this at all… genuinely had no idea what to expect after taking a break for so long so be seeing this tour sell out faster than any tour i've ever played is the most incredible surreal feeling ❤️ thank you to every single one of you who got a ticket and i'm very sorry to any of you who wanted to come and missed out this time.' He added: 'there won't be any other shows for now, want to make sure I don't push myself too far too soon. means more than ya know how many of you were waiting to get tickets this morning x' Got a story?
