BJP counters Congress allegations on voter rolls, says Rahul Gandhi peddling ‘lies'
BJP national spokesperson Syed Zafar Islam, speaking to IANS in Mumbai, said the Election Commission (EC) is an independent body and should not be dragged into partisan politics.
'The Election Commission is an independent body, and all institutions and political parties are equal before it. It works independently without any interference. Making such allegations against it is wrong. The EC has clearly stated that if you make false accusations, provide evidence. If there is no proof, then go to court. Without evidence, such claims are understood to be baseless,' Islam said.
On Rahul Gandhi's Voter Adhikar Yatra, Zafar Islam took a dig at the Congress leader. 'Wherever Rahul Gandhi has gone, Congress has faced a complete wipeout. Now that he has stepped into Bihar, Congress is set to face the same fate here as well,' he remarked.
In Patna, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain lauded the EC's detailed press conference on Sunday, saying it had given a 'strong response' to those 'creating unrest.'
'The names that were supposed to be collected have been collected, and if any names are still pending, there is still time to submit the forms,' Hussain told IANS.
The saffron party also intensified its digital offensive, with BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari posting a point-by-point rebuttal on X to counter Congress leader Jairam Ramesh's claims.
Bhandari accused Rahul Gandhi of 'destroying public trust in elections by peddling lies' and challenged him to file an affidavit under oath if he truly believed in his allegations.
The BJP's aggressive rebuttal indicates it is unwilling to cede ground on the election integrity debate, with leaders accusing the Congress of deliberately sowing doubts ahead of the Bihar polls.

The BJP-led NDA on Sunday announced Maharashtra governor CP Radhakrishnan as its candidate for the upcoming vice presidential election, sparking reactions from opposition leaders in the INDIA bloc, who say the ruling alliance has fielded 'another RSS man'. The 68-year-old BJP leader who is rooted in RSS ideology is known in the party as a soft-spoken, non-controversial figure(X/CP Radhakrishnan ) Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan was picked after detailed discussions with alliance partners, and the party's ideological fount, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), people familiar with the details said on Sunday, as reported by HT earlier. We will sit and decide...," Akhilesh Yadav said. When asked about BJP leader and defense minister Rajnath Singh following Radhakrishnan's candidature, he further stated, '...Rajnath Singh ji is a senior leader. He is from UP, he is the Defence Minister. If they talk, we will talk and if there is a need to talk, we will talk. But our political line will be clear when INDIA Alliance decides...' Another SP leader, Virendra Singh, said, 'This decision has not been taken by the NDA but by RSS... The constituent parties of the NDA must understand what is their importance in a BJP-led government.' From the Shiv Sena (UBT), MP Priyanka Chaturvedi noted Radhakrishnan's administrative background and said she hopes the dignity of the position will be restored if he is elected as the vice president of India. "CP Radhakrishnan has been the Governor of Maharashtra for the past one year... The post of vice president fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar sudden resignation on July 21, the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, citing health reasons. The Election Commission had earlier announced that polling for the vice presidential election will take place on September 9, with counting of votes scheduled for the same day. The last date for filing nominations is August 21 and the deadline to withdraw nominations is August 25.

Air India cancels Zurich-Delhi flight citing technical issue
Air India on Monday said it cancelled its Zurich-Delhi flight of August 17 due to a technical reason, days after the Tata Group-owned airline stated that it had carried out a detailed "inspection" of its Boeing 787 aircraft fleet and "no issues" were detected. However, a passenger on board said the flight aborted take-off at the last minute due to an engine issue. In the last two days, Air India has cancelled at least two flights, including one international, at the last moment, citing technical reasons. Air India operates its Boeing 787-8/9 aircraft fleet to cater to the European market. "Flight AI152 scheduled to operate from Zurich to Delhi on 17 August has been cancelled due to a technical reason, and subsequently due to night curfew in Zurich," Air India said in a statement. The airline said it has arranged alternative flights to the passengers' destination and is providing hotel accommodation, along with full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling options for the passengers. "Air India flight from Zurich to Delhi is cancelled: aborted moments before take-off, technical issue in engine cited," said the passenger in a post on X. A Delhi-bound Air India plane, carrying Lok Sabha Member and Congress leader Hibi Eden among others, aborted take-off at the Kochi airport on Sunday due to a technical issue, officials said. Earlier, the airline was forced to cancel its Milan-Delhi flight owing to a technical issue which was detected during pushback. The airline, which came under private hands in January 2022, has recently been delaying and cancelling some flights at the last minute due to technical and maintenance issues. This comes despite repeated assurances from Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson that the airline has carried out comprehensive checks on its Boeing 787 aircraft fleet. In a message to the customers recently, while listing out the various steps taken after the fatal crash of an AI-171 flight to London soon after take-off from the Ahmedabad airport, Wilson said detailed inspections of its Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft were done and "no issues were found during inspection".
