Raging Torrent Is A Horse That Packs His Track

Forbes12-06-2025
Some may wonder, is there a 'home field advantage' in horse racing? In other sports we know there can be big advantages. Did the air conditioning really just go out in the visitor's locker room at the old Boston Garden? And was that snow plow in New England only for the home team? And how about those friendly confines of Wrigley Field…whoops…sorry Cubs fans
The answer is 'yes' there are home field advantages in the world of Thoroughbred racing. Horses have a 'home' track where they train mostly and have their own stall. Familiar surroundings usually make it easier and most trainers will quickly tell you there is no place like home for every horse.
There are occasions when a Thoroughbred conditioner is lucky enough to have one of those runners that packs their track and takes it with them. This means they are not flustered by travel and seem to flourish no matter the surface or circumstances.
Raging Torrent has become one of those horses that exchanged his carry on for a full-sized Samsonite. Since May 4, 2024, this son of Maximus Mischief has won six races at five different tracks in seven starts. What makes this run of success even more impressive is it has been a globetrotting affair with stops on both U.S. coasts, Kentucky, and Dubai.
" He travels as well as any horse I've ever been around', says trainer turned travel agent Doug O'Neill. 'He's never seen a feed tub he didn't like. His ability to maintain his appetite on the road is one of the things that helps him perform at a high level.'
The Raging Torrent world tour began at Churchill Downs with a front-running score at seven furlongs. That was followed on June 30 with another gate-to-wire win in the Maxfield Stakes also at Churchill. In late August, O'Neill's charge gained his first graded stakes win in the Pat O'Brien at historic Del Mar. A rail draw in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Del Mar saw his win streak come to a close in early November, but a short trip up to Santa Anita was exactly what he needed as he earned grade 1 glory in the Malibu Stakes on December 26.
The success of 2024 provided Team O'Neill with enough confidence to pack their bags and head to Dubai for a start in the Godolphin Mile at Meydan Race Course on April 5, 2025. Wonderfully prepared by a team that has won the Kentucky Derby twice, Raging Torrent again responded with a powerful score against runners from all over the world. Returning stateside, this grandson of Violence made it through customs with his track in tow as he shook up the racing world with an upset win in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Saratoga on June 7.
'We were very concerned about shipping East and facing such a tough field after coming back from Dubai', says the Southern California-based O'Neill. 'Leading up to the race he gave us every indication he was fully recovered from his trip overseas and was in fact asking to compete at a high level again.'
Facing two of the top older male runners in the United States in Fierceness and White Abarrio in the Met Mile, Raging Torrent was an afterthought in this five-horse field as he went off at odds of 8 to 1. Breaking alertly as has become his gameplan for glory, he immediately assumed the lead and never looked back. Under a masterful ride from jockey Frankie Dettori, Raging Torrent simply ran them off their feet and rolled home two and a half lengths to the good.
'The Met Mile was an amazing performance and we couldn't be more proud', says O'Neill. 'His owners have given us the freedom to campaign him at different tracks which I am very thankful for. My amazing staff, led by Leandro Mora has done an amazing job and played a major role in our success story.'
In fourteen career starts Raging Torrent has now won seven times with one second and two third place finishes. His career earnings total $1,797,400. He is currently back in California with his next start to be determined.

Jon Gruden's lawyers: Ruling paves way for "holding the NFL accountable"

The NFL has not provided a comment in response to the finding by the Nevada Supreme Court that the arbitration clause in the NFL's Constitution and Bylaws is "unconscionable" — and thus unenforceable — as to former Raiders coach Jon Gruden. Gruden's lawyers have issued a statement to PFT. "We're very pleased with the Nevada Supreme Court's decision, not just for Coach Gruden but for all employees facing an employer's unfair arbitration process," said Adam Hosmer-Henner of McDonald Carano LLP, the firm representing Gruden. "This victory further vindicates Coach Gruden's reputation, and it clears the way to swiftly bringing him full justice and holding the NFL accountable." It's likely if not inevitable that the NFL will file a petition for appeal to the United States Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court doesn't take the case (or if it does and the NFL loses), it will be time for the case to proceed to discovery. And that's when the NFL may throw money at Gruden in an effort to settle his claim that the league and Commissioner Roger Goodell leaked emails he had sent while working for ESPN to multiple media outlets. Here's the most important question: Will he reject any offer the league makes? A July 2023 article about the leaked emails that forced Gruden to resign asserted that Gruden hopes "to burn the house down." That can happen only if he first proves who, from a fairly tight circles of people who had access to the supposedly secret emails from the Washington investigation, leaked some to the Wall Street Journal for publication on a Friday and then, when that didn't do the trick, leaked more to the New York Times on a Monday. At that point, things could get very interesting.

🎥 The top five goals from the MLS weekend

We are back once again for another installment of the top five goals across the latest MLS weekend. Matchday 28 featured plenty of talking points, as usual, but some ridiculous goals from some bright young talents offered more than enough entertainment. Here are the best hits from the weekend. 5. Jaziel Orozco vs Nashville There is the golden rule that goalkeepers, regardless of sport, should never be beaten at their near post. But there are cases where sheer power can trump the traditional narrative. Jaziel Orozco's hit against Nashville is a prime example that sometimes, an effort at goal is unstoppable. The 21-year-old displayed the full range of his player profile in front of home support when he was the first to pounce on a loose ball in the box, controlling well before darting through the defense before unleashing a low piledriver past a helpless Joe Willis to open the scoring in the 23rd minute from a ludicrous angle to set St. Louis on course for a 3-1 home win against tough opposition. 4. Darren Yapi vs Minnesota A running theme to begin the week has been focusing on the young talent that continues to break into the senior ranks across MLS, and Colorado's Darren Yapi is certainly among them. Still just 20, Yapi has gone from strength to strength this season for the Rapis, and his two-goal performance against Minnesota at the weekend was proof that he is quickly becoming a valuable asset at DSG Park. The owner of the match-winning effort in the 2-1 win over the Loons, it was his first strike that seemed to come right out of the Thierry Henry school of goalscoring wizardry, with Yapi racing into space down the left channel before cutting between two markers and quickly bending a low effort into the far corner. More of this, and a 2026 World Cup roster spot for the United States may not be unrealistic. 3. Yannick Bright vs Orlando Inter Miami continue to bemuse fans, neutrals, and pundits alike. Despite all the star power under Javier Mascherano's command, the Herons remain well short. of expectations across 2025, and a poor result against in-state rival Orlando brought their frailties into full view. But despite the poor reading material on the scoreboard, a moment to savour from Yannick Bright gave supporters something to please the palate. The 23-year-old Milan native bagged his first goal in Inter Miami colors with aplomb, smashing in a volley from just outside the box with vengeance behind it while leaving Pedro Gallese to parry it away. A top effort from a budding talent. 2. Wilfried Zaha vs Cincinnati Charlotte are the hottest team in MLS, and a narrow 1-0 win against the growing Eastern Conference power that is Cincinnati planted a flag in the sand across a season where the Crown could play the darkhorse role in the MLS Cup (should they qualify). Level at nil-nil and with a man advantage with five minutes remaining, star man Wilfried Zaha popped up with a moment of individual brilliance to produce a match-winner on the volley to put a postage stamp on all three points. Zaha talks the talk, but moments like this prove he backs it up while walking the walk. 1. Snyder Brunell vs LA Galaxy It may not have been the prettiest or most spectacular hit of the weekend, but surely there was no moment more special than Snyder Brunell's effort against the LA Galaxy that saw Seattle run rampant away from home. The 18-year-old homegrown midfielder came on to make his debut against the legacy club in the 73rd minute, but he could not have expected adding a first MLS goal to his CV to a night he already was sure to never forget. Finding himself on the end of a squared ball across goal from Alex Roldán, the young midfielder turned home his effort first-time past Novak Mićović to bookend a huge result and a massive personal milestone. 📸 Editorial Photo Credit: © Kiyoshi Mio | 2025 Aug 10 - Imagn Images
