Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jul 25 (PTI) Villagers staged a 'rasta roko' on a highway in Maharashtra's Beed district on Friday, demanding arrest in the 2023 murder case of Parli-based businessman Mahadev Munde.
Residents of Bhopla and Kanherwadi villages in Parli taluka staged a protest on the Parli-Ambajogai Highway for about an hour in the morning, an official said.
Mahadev Munde was abducted and murdered in Parli city of Beed district on October 21, 2023. The Beed police have not made any arrests.
The probe in the case has been handed over to the local crime branch.
Last week, the murdered businessman's wife, Dnyaneshwari Munde, consumed poison on the premises of the Beed superintendent of police's office. She was rushed to a hospital, where she underwent treatment.
Talking to reporters, Dyaneshwari Munde said, 'The police are responsible for the situation today. It is their failure that they could not apprehend the accused." Rajabhau Fad, sarpanch of Karnherwadi village, said Munde's wife has been fighting for justice for 20 months now.
'We demand that a special investigation team of senior officers be constituted to nab the accused," he said. PTI AW ARU

'How Such Kind Of...: HC Orders Probe Into Alleged Illegal Marriages By Arya Samaj Societies

Last Updated: The Allahabad HC ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to investigate Arya Samaj societies for allegedly conducting illegal marriages. The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to probe into the functioning of Arya Samaj societies that are allegedly conducting illegal marriages across the state. The single-judge bench issued the directive while hearing a plea of a man, named Sonu, who is accused of abducting and sexual assaulting a minor girl belonging to different faith. The applicant told the court that he had later married the girl at an Arya Samaj Mandir. Justice Prashant Kumar noted that these societies were performing marriages without verifying the legal age of the individuals involved and were potentially violating the U.P. Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021. The court specifically ordered the Home Secretary of the state to appoint an officer not below the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police to investigate the proliferation of such 'fake" Arya Samaj institutions. It also sought a compliance report in the form of a personal affidavit to be submitted by the next hearing on August 29. 'However, the Secretary, Home, Govt. of U.P. is directed to get the matter investigated by an officer, not below the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police, as to how such kind of fake Arya Samaj Societies have flourished throughout the State, who are getting such marriages done, in some cases even of the minor girls and thereafter, issuing certificates, and that too, by violating the provisions of the U.P. Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021," the judge noted. The court order came in response to a petition filed by Sonu who sought quashing of a summoning order related to an FIR registered against him in September 2023. He had been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting the woman when she was minor. Sonu's counsel argued that he had married the girl in February 2020 and that she had started living with him only after attaining majority. However, the court found that the alleged marriage had no legal standing, as the girl was a minor at the time, the marriage was unregistered, and there was no valid religious conversion as required by law. The court also pointed out that the victim and the accused belonged to different religions and that the ceremony reportedly conducted at an Arya Samaj Mandir in Prayagraj did not meet the legal standards set by the UP Marriage Registration Rules, 2017. Subsequently, the court dismissed Sonu's plea to quash the proceedings, ruling that the alleged marriage could not be considered legally valid. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Odisha Police rescues 28-day-old infant allegedly sold by parents

Bhubaneswar, Jul 28 (PTI) Police in Odisha's Bolangir district on Monday rescued a 28-day-old baby girl who was allegedly sold by her parents for Rs 20,000 due to extreme poverty, officials said. Police rescued the infant from the house of a couple at Paikamal in neighbouring Bargarh district and handed it over to the child welfare committee (CWC), Titlagarh sub-divisional police officer Kalyan Behera told PTI over the phone. She, however, said no one was detained or arrested in the case as there had been no formal complaint. Bolangir district CWC in-charge chairperson Lina Babu confirmed that the infant was rescued from the house of a couple at Paikmal. 'We have not started an inquiry into the matter as the infant's rescue was our priority. During the day, we will launch a probe and lodge a police," she said. According to sources, the alleged incident of child sale came to light on Sunday from Bagdera village under Bhaleigaon Panchayat in Titilagarh sub-division. A poverty-stricken couple, identified as Nila and Kanak Rana, has been accused of selling their newborn daughter for Rs 20,000, police said. However, the Paikmal couple denied allegations of purchasing the child, but claimed that they brought the baby keeping in view her biological parents' poverty. Officials said Nila and Kanak are both remarried. Nila has three daughters from his first wife, while Kanak has one daughter from her previous marriage. Citing financial distress, the Rana couple allegedly handed over the newborn to the other family. 'We have not sold her. We gave the baby for her better upbringing, not for money," Nila Rana told the CWC. In November 2024, police and CWC had rescued a newborn that was allegedly sold by her mother after her birth to a private hospital in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The incident was reported from Lathor area in Bolangir district. PTI AAM MNB view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 14:45 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
