Free meal for 500 people to celebrate National Fish and Chip Day in this Scottish city

Scotland's National Fish and Chip Day comes on Friday with 500 free meals and Irn Bru being given out on in this city
Scotland's National Fish and Chip Day is back this Friday, June 6, and Glasgow foodies are in for a treat. To celebrate, the team behind the Scottish Fish and Chips Awards will be handing out 500 free meals on Great Western Road, complete with a can of Irn Bru to wash it down.
The giveaway kicks off from midday near Oran Mor, where Joanna's Chippy Van will be parked up and serving hot suppers on a first come, first served basis, Glasgow Live reports.

It also marks the launch of the 2025 Scottish Fish and Chip Awards, with voting for Scotland's favourite chippy opening the same day at @scottishfishandchipawards.

The awards are a celebration of everything that goes into making Scotland's most iconic takeaway, from fishermen and farmers to fryers and servers.
And as director Warren Paul puts it, 'We wanted to do something nice, try to put a few smiles on faces in these tricky times. We're all struggling with the cost of living, so a free meal on a Friday can only be a good thing, and when it's fish and chips it's even better.'
He added: 'Sometimes these National Days for different things can slip by with no one really paying attention but this one is different, it's the daddy of them all.
"So we wanted to really mark Fish and Chip Day with a tasty freebie, and let readers know you can nominate and vote for your favourite chippy now in our Awards.'
Paul also stressed the value of the awards when it comes to quality: 'The Fish and Chip Awards are there to give you a guarantee that your hard-earned cash will buy quality food for your family at our winners and highly recommended outlets so join in the voting this year and make sure your favourite gets a shout.'

He went on to thank their partners, including Joanna's Chippy Van, for making the event possible: 'We love fish and chips, that's why we set up the Awards to honour the very best doing it, so come see us for some free food and tell us who you think does it best.'
Last year's awards saw fierce competition, with restaurants and takeaways across the country battling it out for top titles.

The Kraken Chippy in East Kilbride took home Best Chip Shop in the west, while Tony's Shawhead in Coatbridge was crowned Best Fish Supper in the West.
Quintilani's in Larkhall walked away with Best Pizza, and Hayston Golf Club in Kirkintilloch claimed the title of Best Fish Tea.

Valerios Fish & Chips in Lanark was praised for Best Customer Service, while Buon Appetito in Clarkston was recognised as Best Family Business.
Ayrshire's winners included Barassie Chippy in Troon for Best Fish Supper and The Principal Café in Galston, which was not only named Best Chip Shop in Ayrshire but also Best Newcomer overall.
More recently, Sea Salt and Sole has been officially named Scotland's Best Fish and Chips in the 2025 Deliveroo Restaurant Awards.
With locations in Dyce, Bridge of Don, Cove and Ellon, the Aberdeenshire favourite beat stiff competition from across the country.

Mikel Arteta identifies next Arsenal transfer arrival - but faces Gunners dilemma

Arsenal kicked off their Premier League campaign with victory at Manchester United and have spent over £200million in the summer, but still Mikel Arteta wants more for his title hopefuls Mikel Arteta still wants to strengthen his left wing options - but must sell before he can do more transfer business. That leaves Arsenal facing the prospect of not making any more big money moves in this window unless they start to ship players out. ‌ The Gunners have already been linked with Real Madrid superstar Rodrygo while Arteta is a huge fan of Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze but both will not move to the Emirates unless there is a big last minute shift. Tottenham are now in pole position to land Eze with negotiations ongoing as they look to seal a £60m deal - £55m plus £5m in add-ons - but Palace are determined to stand firm and drive a good deal. ‌ That is currently out of Arsenal's reach because they have a bloated squad with all their new £200m-plus worth of arrivals but they have so far struggled to get players out of the door with the spotlight on sporting director Andrea Berta to balance the books. Leandro Trossard is most likely to go at this stage as Brentford, Aston Villa and several foreign clubs have shown interest in the versatile forward who is now further down the pecking order. First team squad members Jakub Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Reiss Nelson did not even make the bench at Manchester United on Sunday. ‌ Teenager Max Dowman, 15, was at the game but was left out of the match day squad while Christian Norgaard had a small knock and Gabriel Jesus is recovering from a long term knee injury. Fenerbahce have shown an interest in Zinchenko who only has a year left on his contract while Porto and Stuttgart are interested in Vieira with the Gunners keen to do a permanent deal. Lokonga has also attracted interest while Kiwior is considering his options after falling down the pecking order despite an impressive finish to last season. Arsenal signed Noni Madueke from Chelsea for £52m but Gabriel Martinelli started the season at Old Trafford and there is a feeling that they would still like to bring in extra quality. But the interest in Eze did not progress because that would also block off the pathway for Ethan Nwaneri and Dowman getting first team opportunities. They must offload to do more deals in this window but if another move is to be done then a left winger would be the most likely. Home Bargains fans say 'run, don't walk' for new 'insane' 59p sweet treat

"Got a couple of these on Friday, I can confirm they are insane." Home Bargains is the place to bag a variety of different things. From homeware and beauty products to clothing and even groceries, it's a one-stop for everything these days. ‌ However, that's not all it offers, as the beloved discounter branched out into pastries with the launch of its own bakery aisle across select stores in 2023 - and there's a brand new treat that has taken the internet by a storm. ‌ The bakery, which already offers up a range of delicious treats, is now home to the brand new Biscoff Croissant, but shoppers will need to act fast, as "once they're gone, they're gone." ‌ Those who don't want to miss out on the social media viral snack will be able to check out their local Home Bargains bakery, with Scotland able to find the aisle in nine stores that includes Livingston, Blairgowrie, Dundee and Glasgow. Costing a purse-friendly 59p per croissant, this sweet snack has been "freshly prepared in store" with buttery, flaky pastry and a filling made from everyone's favourite caramelised biscuit spread. There's no denying the love for Biscoff is strong, with the popular biscuit now being available to buy in multiple forms including ice cream, spreads, dessert sauces and even as a McFlurry at McDonald's. So, it's no surprise to hear that Home Bargains' fresh bakery item is already a hit with loyal fans on social media who have praised it as "unreal", while others have urged "run, don't walk" to snap them up. Sharing the exciting news on Facebook, the budget chain said: "Our Biscoff croissant is here, but hurry… once they're gone, they're gone!" ‌ Racing to the comments section, one eager shopper who already got their hands on the treat said: "Got a couple of these on Friday, I can confirm they are insane." Another Home Bargains shopper added: "Run, don't walk." ‌ Someone else enthusiastically wrote: "These look so good." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! While most shoppers were excited about the news, it is worth mentioning that, since the retailer only offers a bakery in around 100 of its 600 stores, not everyone will have easy access to the Biscoff Croissant. ‌ One shopper lamenting this fact on TikTok said: "Whattttt why doesn't my home bargains have a bakery." Meanwhile, another excited Instagram user added: "Omg I bet these are so good." A bakery is not the only in store service for foodie fans at Home Bargains, as the retailer also operates a café in 42 of its UK stores, with four in Scotland branches based in Livingston, Cumbernauld, Ayr and Dundee. website.

Discounted retailer launches up to 50% off sale as three Scots stores to shut

The high street firm is set to close a total of 26 stores as part of restructuring plans. A major UK retailer has been spotted launching closing down sales with up to 50 percent off. It comes as the firm has announced more closures. ‌ The Original Factory Shop is in the midst of restructuring plans that will see it close down a total of 26 stores, with even more now being announced to close in the coming weeks. ‌ As part of the move, the discounted firm has already closed 17 stores across the country, with four being based in Scotland alone. ‌ Closures across Scotland include Perth, Arbroath and Peterhead on June 28, while the Cupar store was shuttered on July 27. Blairgowrie, Kinross and Nairn are also on the list, although dates have not been confirmed. Two more stores in England have now been added to the list of ongoing closures, with sales at the affected stores offering half-price off absolutely everything in a bid to clear stock. As reported by the Sun, among the new wave of closures will be the Chard store, with a Facebook post announcing that it would permanently cease trading on September 7. The post told customers: 'We are sorry to let you know… This store is closing. Thank you to our wonderful colleagues for your support throughout our time here in the local community.' Ahead of its closing date, the store has announced that it is offering a massive clearance sale with up to 50 percent off all stock. ‌ The high street chain offers a variety of ranges in store including fashion, homeware, toys and beauty, with products from its own labels and big name brands such as Bold, Nike, L'Oréal Paris and more. The full post read: "We'll soon be closing the store and would like to take this time to thank all of our customers at Chard store. We have loved serving you and being part of the local community. "Our last trading day is Sunday 7th September. We hope you will pop in to see us before we close. All stock is reduced - up to 50% off original price." ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! A further two stores also made similar posts confirming closures, with the Whitchurch, Shropshire and Mexborough, South Yorkshire being earmarked for closure, although the date has not been confirmed for both. The Original Factory Shop has been a high street staple since it first opened in 1969. It was recently sold to Modella Capital, the firm that bought over WHSmith and Hobbycraft, in February 2025. ‌ To help renegotiate rents at 88 stores, the private equity firm drafted up restructuring plans before drawing up plans to initiate a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) for the retailer in April. A CVA is often used by companies to prevent insolvency, which could otherwise force stores to close or trigger the collapse of the entire business.
