The council also lauded Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi for championing the cause of OBCs and consistently raising issues affecting the community.
The meeting, held under the chairmanship of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, discussed a range of issues related to the upliftment of deprived and marginalised communities.
Bengaluru, Jul 15 (PTI) The Congress party's OBC Advisory Council Meet on Tuesday Tuesday expressed concern over the continued underrepresentation of backward communities in key sectors such as the bureaucracy, media, and corporate world.
'Congress party, our president Mallikarjun Kharge and our Nyaya Yoddha Rahul Gandhi are fighting for the deprived sections of our society,' the Congress OBC department head Anil Jaihind told reporters after the meeting.
He said, 'It's a tragedy that 90 per cent of our Indian population of OBC, SC and ST are being marginalised. They are not in bureaucracy, media and in the capital world. These things are repeatedly highlighted by our Nyaya Yoddya Rahul Gandhi.' The Congress' OBC advisory council was recently formed and Jaihind is its convener for being the chairman of the OBC department of the Congress.
Speaking on the occasion, Siddaramaiah said, 'I am making it very clear that the BJP was never in favour of social justice and reservations and they are never in favour of inclusive development of the population of this country.' He further said there is inequality among the people across India and whenever the Congress brings programmes for social justice, reservation and equality for the deprived communities, the BJP has a history of opposing it.
In the keynote address during the OBC meeting, which was shared with media, the CM highlighted the role of Congress in strengthening democracy.
'At this crucial juncture in our nation's journey, when the forces of division and sectarianist privileged classes are sharpening their knives against the principles of equality and fraternity, it becomes our duty to strengthen the foundation of social democracy in India,' he said.
Siddaramaiah underscored that this was not a fight for reservation to Backward Classes alone but for recognition, dignity, and power of these classes. PTI GMS GMS ROH

Congress expels Thoppumpady division councillor

The Ernakulam District Congress Committee (DCC) has expelled Sheeba Surom, the Congress councillor representing the Thoppumpady division, from the party. The letter issued by DCC president Mohammed Shiyas on Wednesday (July 30, 2025) cited 'anti-party activities' as the reason for her dismissal. Ms. Durom had been issued a notice in the past for not attending party functions and also acting against the interests of the party, it said. Ms. Durom, however, said that she had not received any official communication or even a call from the party leadership, and that she was unaware of her expulsion. M.G. Aristotle, UDF parliamentary leader in the Kochi Corporation, said that Ms. Durom was in the past suspended from the party for six months for not voting for the Congress candidate in the election to the education standing committee. Her vote was found invalid, which, he alleged, was part of a 'deal.' Mr. Aristotle said that she had repeatedly skipped meetings. 'At a time when the Congress is actively highlighting discrepancies in the draft voters' list, she is not following the party line and is working in favour of the CPI(M). The DCC president has clarified the situation through the dismissal to avoid the risk of the councillor approaching the public claiming to represent the party while acting at cross purposes, especially with the local body polls round the corner,' he added.

Canada Makes First Posting in India Since Diplomatic Row, Envoys May be Appointed This Month

Diplomacy Ottawa has appointed Jeff David to the post of consul general in its consulate in Mumbai. New Delhi: Canada has made its first personnel move into India since withdrawing 41 diplomats, appointing a new head for its consulate in Mumbai – just six weeks after the countries' prime ministers met to reset strained ties. Global Affairs Canada on Wednesday (July 30) announced four diplomatic postings, including appointments to Jordan, Australia and Libya. Among them was the notice that Jeff David 'will become Consul General in Mumbai (Republic of India)', adding that David'will replace Diedrah Kelly'. The low-key announcement effectively marks the end of a freeze on diplomatic postings in Canadian missions in India that began in October 2023, when Canada pulled out 41 diplomats after New Delhi demanded parity in numbers. Ties had nosedived following former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegation that Indian agents were involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen proscribed as a Khalistani terrorist by India. Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, where the two leaders agreed to restore high commissioners to each other's capitals as the first step toward reviving diplomatic engagement. While both sides had agreed to start with the high commissioners, diplomatic sources confirmed that Canada's first actual appointment is to the Mumbai consulate. Kelly, the previous consul general in Mumbai, left India in 2023 and has been based in Manila since December that year. Following the initial October 2023 withdrawal, which included officials from Canadian consulates, there was a further round of expulsions. In October 2024, both countries expelled six diplomats each, including their respective high commissioners, in a tit-for-tat exchange after Canadian police alleged a 'targeted campaign against Canadian citizens' involving Indian agents. India began signalling a thaw in April this year following Carney's election as Canadian prime minister, against the backdrop of rising global economic volatility and looming US trade tariffs. After the Modi-Carney meeting in June, a Canadian foreign ministry delegation held talks with counterparts in India's Ministry of External Affairs in July. The Wire has learnt that both sides have formally sought 'agrément' or consent for their respective high commissioner-designates. While the process to give approval usually takes at least three months, sources said it is being expedited as both sides are keen to move quickly. An announcement is likely by the second half of August. India has nominated its current envoy to Spain, Dinesh Patnaik, for the post in Ottawa. Trump's 25% tariffs: Government starts talks, industry seeks sops to offset hit

NEW DELHI: Within hours of President Trump announcing a 25% tariff on Indian exports to the US, the commerce department sought to comfort exporters while also nudging them to explore other markets. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Exporters responded with suggestions that govt offer them assistance to overcome the adverse impact of US actions. During consultations led by Rajesh Agarwal, special secretary in the commerce department, exporters suggested govt immediately come up with measures that would also boost sentiment. "There is low-hanging fruit govt can address immediately," said a source in an export promotion council. A senior govt official told TOI the commerce department was also seeking to speed up reforms for special economic zones, which would help exporters as well as boost capacity utilisation by making it easier to sell in the domestic tariff area (Indian territory outside SEZs). One of the recommendations from exporters was to immediately start the export promotion mission, announced in the Budget but yet to become operational. In fact, during a meeting with commerce & industry minister Piyush Goyal, some of the elements, including marketing support and assistance to deal with trade actions, were also discussed. Although the outlay is a little over Rs 4,000 crore for the current financial year, the department is hopeful of the allocation being increased. While only a handful of industry bodies have sent their inputs so far, interest subsidies are something several executives said were required to help exporters tide over the crisis as it would hurt orders in the short term and might create some cash flow issues as well. "There is also a need to process duty drawback claims and GST refunds for exporters faster to ensure adequate liquidity," said another executive with an export promotion body. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While exporters had queries on the "penalty" proposed by Trump, govt officials said they were awaiting clarity on the issue. Businesses have suggested an early bilateral trade agreement with the US will reduce disruption in the market, and are hoping for positive news during the next round of talks from Aug 25.
