I tried 3 tinted SPFs promising foundation coverage– one covered my pigmentation

Daily Mirror02-06-2025
Our head of beauty goes barefaced to test new tinted SPFs from Supergoop!, Beauty of Joseon and Merit...
I have a confession: I don't like applying suncream to my face. I feel guilty even typing it, being a beauty editor and all. Don't get me wrong, I completely appreciate the importance of wearing it every day, and I will do it, but I've just never found the whole applying and wearing experience pleasant. Even formulas promising to be non-sticky, fast-absorbing and ultra-lightweight feel claggy or greasy to me. I just feel cleaner when I'm not wearing the extra SPF layer on my skin.
But this year, after turning 32, I've really started to notice a change in my skin. Patches of pigmentation on my cheeks have started to appear, and I don't have that youthful glow that I've taken for granted my whole life. So, in a bid to keep my skin looking as healthy as possible for as long as possible, I've made it my mission to take daily suncare more seriously – because, as we all know, diligent SPF usage can ward off signs of premature ageing.
I may be a little late to the 'I love SPF party', but I have picked a good year to become a devotee. I've seen more and more launches from SPF brands promising tinted coverage to rival foundations, water-light textures to rival your usual day serum, and pore-diffusing formulas that mimic a good primer. In fact, three landed on our Mirror beauty desk the exact week I made it my mission to find my perfect product in Beauty of Joseon's Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen, Supergoop!'s Mattescreen or Merit's The Uniform Tinted Mineral Sunscreen.
Spoiler: One of them has indeed turned out to be juuuust right...
A note before we start: I will just say that all of these SPFs can give a nice tint, but they won't ever be a foundation, and vice versa. SPF tests are based on applying 2mg per square centimetre of skin, which is a lot more product than most people use for make-up. So, I'm trying to find a tinted SPF that comes as close to a foundation as possible while still being very much an SPF.
Supergoop's Mattescreen Sunscreen SPF30
Shop it for £36.50
Pros:
Genuinely mattifying without feeling chalky or tight
Smooth, silicone-primer-like texture that grips make-up
Helps foundation stay in place all day
Mineral formula with zinc oxide, ideal for sensitive or reactive skin
Light tint that blends well and reduces white cast
Doesn't pill under other skincare or make-up
Cons:
£34 price tag is on the higher side
One universal shade made to blend with a 'broad range of skin tones' – but darker skin tones report it can give a slight ashy cast
Matte finish may not suit those who prefer a dewy look
SPF30 is good, but not the highest available (worth noting, though, that the brand has many other SPF50s)
Zoe says: "I absolutely love this SPF because it feels like a primer, cutting down my number one issue with many SPFs: how greasy they feel. It actually reminds me of the Smashbox silicone-based primer I used to wear when I went out for a big night out and wanted to make-up to really last. I will keep wearing this under a foundation, but I think it's easy to see from my before-and-after shot that it doesn't offer much in the way of coverage. However, with only one universal tint shade currently available, there's no way it could be so tinted that it suits only one skin tone. I do like how it mattifies my skin, and it really doesn't feel like an SPF to apply, so it's hard to fault it for anything other than it being a factor 30 instead of 50 and not covering blemishes or pigmentation."
Beauty of Joseon Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF30
Shop it for £17
Pros
The texture is super lightweight and serum-like
Has a soft, natural finish that's not too matte or too glowy
Comes with a sheer tint that gives a nice blurring effect
No fragrance
Available in 12 flexible shades
The price is pretty reasonable, especially for something you'd use every day
Cons
SPF30 is fine for everyday use, but might not cut it if you're out in strong sun for long
Doesn't shout about its UVA protection, which could be a worry if you're prone to pigmentation (like me)
It's not the longest-lasting, on account of it being very sheer
Zoe says:" When I first applied this, I was almost certain it wouldn't be for me. It's water-light, which is really lovely, but it's so sheer. For a girl like me who has a very shiny face anyway (read: oily), it made me feel like Edward Cullen from Twilight when he goes into the sunshine. However, once I let it settle in, it really grew on me. It genuinely feels weightless on my skin, and I love the shade choice available. From my photos, I can also see how much it evened out my skin tone, despite not giving much coverage in a typical base sense. I left this out for my 64-year-old mum to try, and she LOVES it. She says it makes her look so youthful. If you're looking for an anti-ageing tint, or you love the K-beauty 'glass skin' look, this will be for you."
Merit Beauty The Uniform Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF50
Shop it for £34
Pros
Feels lightweight on the skin, almost like you're not wearing anything
Has a natural, satin finish– not too matte or too dewy
Comes in 15 shades that are designed to adapt well to a variety of skin tones
Uses 100% mineral zinc oxide for SPF 50 protection, and doesn't leave a white cast
Made without silicones, oils, or fragrance, so it's a good shout for sensitive or acne-prone skin
Sheer but buildable coverage that evens out tone without looking heavy or cakey
Cons
Can cling to dry patches if your skin isn't well prepped
Some users have reported a bit of pilling when layered over certain moisturisers or serums
At £34, it's definitely on the spendy side for a daily SPF
Zoe says: "I teased earlier that I found my perfect SPF match, and this is the one I was referring to. I love it, and I never thought I'd say that about an SPF. I went a shade darker in the tint than I normally would in a foundation, and it gave me both the look of instant bronzing drops and a lightweight foundation. I felt like my skin looked healthier and smoother, and even my patches of pigmentation were covered. It's definitely lighter than a foundation, but it also meant I could skip a base layer. In fact, I tested layering it under my regular foundation, and I have to say it looks much better on its own. It's very quickly become my holiday, weekend and working from home go-to– and it's definitely worth the price."

Sephora fans flock to buy 'lightweight' SPF that's 'perfect for no makeup days'

The SPF has been proven as safe for sensitive skin and is non-acnegenic while also providing a deep holiday glow everyday Sephora shoppers are flocking to buy an SPF that's perfect for 'no makeup makeup days'. Kosas's Sunlit DreamBeam Smoothing Makeup Base SPF30 comes in two sizes: 15ml and 40ml. The mineral sunscreen smooths and moisturises skin while providing a makeup base. Sunlit has a soft golden hue that gives a warm vacation glow, it's water-resistant, non-acnegenic and even safe for sensitive skin. In a consumer study across 33 men and women who used DreamBeam for 28 days, 100% agreed that the product felt lightweight and didn't look greasy or clog pores. They also all said that skin looked smoother, brighter, and more radiant. Tinted SPF products are a popular summertime option to keep skin safe while also looking good. Supergoop has a huge range of shades in their Protec(tint) SPF50 Daily Skin Tint (£36) which makes it more accessible for those with deeper skin tones. Drunk Elephant also has their Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense SPF30 (£32) which some shoppers have swapped out their foundation for. It's brought in an average rating of 4.4 out of five on Sephora. One shopper wrote: "I'm not one for leaving reviews but I will for this. I'm someone who suffers with large pores and oily skin especially in my t-zone. When I use this product my pores shrink to barely anything, my skin tone is evened out and gives me a nice glow that doesn't look oily. it pairs well with all my other products I use, I can say it will be a repurchase for here on out." One shopper suggested the tint might be too dark for fair skin, writing: "Really happy with this, be warned the the tint is quite dark so not for fair skin! Really love the glow it gives! Bronzed holiday look." Another was thrilled with both the coverage and the sun protection in the product, writing: "I really like this SPF. I have rosacea do my skin is sensitive and needs a slight coverage to cover some redness and pimples, however for everyday wear i do not like wearing heavy foundations therefore the dream beam is perfect for me, it offers me SPF which having rosacea is a must for me fairly while also providing a nice natural tint of coverage. "The product doesn't irritate my skin or cause any breakouts. The texture is so smooth and it gives a dewy look to it. Not sure how it would be for oily skin people as the finish for me is very dewy but I like this glow it provides so its fine for me. I recently went on holiday to Greece and wore this every day, didn't burn in the sun and also gave me a perfect holiday glow at the same time." While another added: "This is gorgeous. Lightweight easy to blend with a slight glow. Perfect for no makeup makeup days." Jada Jones on our team has tried this SPF and said: "I love this way more than I expected to. I was recently packing my makeup bag for a cross country trip and before packing my foundation I tried on this SPF. I've never put the foundation down faster. "My skin was glowing and smoothed out, I didn't even use concealer. I paired it with lip stain and lip gloss and felt done up for the day. I got multiple compliments and felt great, this is definitely one I'll be reaching for time and time again." Kosas DreamBeam Smoothing Makeup Base SPF30 in Sunlit is available for £37 for a 40ml bottle. There is also a mini 15ml bottle available for £17.

The bruising on my arm was blamed on ageing but now it bleeds – should I see my GP?

OUR resident specialist and NHS GP, Dr Zoe Williams, shares her expert advice. Today, Dr Zoe helps a reader whose bruising on their arm was blamed on ageing - but now it bleeds. 2 Q: I am a 60-year-old male and for about a year now, I've noticed I am getting bruise-like blemishes on my right arm, but nowhere else. I pointed this out to a nurse who administered my B12 injection. I was diagnosed with B12 deficiency about 18 months ago, after having forgetfulness. I also suffer from COPD. The nurse brushed off the blemishes saying it's a sign of skin ageing. But during the past few months they sometimes bleed. Should I make an appointment to see my GP? A) Thank you for sharing the images, which show a reticular, or net-like, bruising pattern on the lower arm, with some areas of scab formation. The short answer to your question is 'yes' – you should see a doctor, and sharing these images via e-consult would be a great way of preparing for that appointment. There are a number of potential causes that your GP might want to consider investigating. They include vasculitis, a blood clot or autoimmune conditions – for example, lupus. Any abnormal bruising or bleeding should always be checked out. TIP Lyme disease, which can be caught from infected tick bites, peaks in summer. The UK Health Security Agency has warned the public to be vigilant. Protect yourself by sticking to main pathways in green spaces, covering your skin and checking all over your body for ticks after a walk. Only use a tick removal tool to get the bug out if it has bitten and latched on to you. What is Lyme disease and how do ticks spread it?

‘Non-greasy' sweat-resistant SPF 50 that doesn't sting eyes called perfect for runners

Sunscreen is an essential in summer, but stinging eyes can be one unwanted side effect. Luckily one of our favourite sun cream brands has just launched a new SPF that's ideal for exercising One of the most common reasons we hear why people don't enjoy wearing sunscreen in summer is that, if you're sweating or getting wet, it can run into your eye and irritate them. Luckily, we think we've found a solution that's being hailed as perfect for wearing when exercising in summer. One sun care brand has impressed the whole Mirror shopping team this year for its high-quality formulas: Ultra Violette. We all love the brand's Future Fluid SPF 50+ Superlight Mineral SKINSCREEN, but now there's a new formula out that could be set to take this top spot. Ultra Violette's new Vibrant Screen SPF50 Active Facial Skinscreen, £32, is 'a breathable, water-resistant facial SPF' in a super-lightweight, transparent, gel-like texture (so absolutely no white cast). It offers up to two hours of water-resistant sun protection, plus is marked as 'sweat-safe' – and shoppers agree. "I love 90% of UV's sunscreens and this is another addition to the love pile.," one comment on the Sephora website reads. "Lightweight and non-greasy. Perfect for summer and I also run and this feels comfy and doesn't sting my eyes." Over on Space NK, someone wrote: "Normally use Supreme Screen but this is also lovely so I would repurchase. Never had any issue with Ultra Violette like some other SPF that can sting your eyes. Would highly recommend. I tend to stock up when on offer. It's lighter than Supreme Screen but still feels hydrating and works well under make-up as well." Another person put: "I've tried a lot of the Ultra Violette sunscreens and they always give great protection, even if some of them aren't my favourites. I really like this one, it's very light in texture, but doesn't feel full of alcohol (which often irritates my skin). I have combination skin and it's hydrating without being super shiny." They do, however, go on to mention an issue they found with the packaging: "My only issue, and I might have a dodgy bottle, but the watery texture doesn't fit that well with the packaging - it squirts out unreliable and messily. I think a bottle without a pump would have been better." More facial SPFs we've been testing and loving this summer include Lancaster Sun Beauty Sensitive Skin Mineral Face Cream SPF50, currently £21.60 (our head of shopping Zoe's favourite), Bioré UV Aqua Water Essence Sunscreen SPF50, £15.99, which feels so refreshing and is great for guys too, and Garnier Ambre Solaire Over Makeup Super UV Protection Mist SPF50, currently £8.67, but top-up over make-up.
