Boys' basketball Top 20: Two Montgomery County contenders enter the rankings
When this week of high school basketball concludes, the calendar will read 'February' — a notice to the area's top teams that the time to begin playing to their fullest potential is near. Less than a month remains before postseason basketball arrives.
Many usual suspects have dotted these rankings all season — think traditional private school powers and star-led publics rounding into form — and that hasn't changed as the most consequential time of year arrives. Gonzaga and Paul VI will play on Tuesday in a battle of No. 1 and No. 2, both undefeated in the WCAC with first place on the line in a rematch of last year's championship game. It's one of three top 10 boys' matchups this week, the others being a contest between No. 4 St. John's and No. 7 Bishop O'Connell on Tuesday and a Saturday matinee pitting No. 3 Mount Zion Prep against No. 6 Sidwell Friends.

Did Bryson DeChambeau Get Caught Cheating at 2025 U.S. Open?
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Bryson DeChambeau entered the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club looking to defend his title. He captured his second U.S. Open title last year at Pinehurst No. 2, edging out Rory McIlroy in dramatic fashion. Much has been made of Oakmont's difficulty all week, with several PGA Tour pro's saying they would happily take even par for the tournament. Thus far, DeChambeau has found out just how difficult the Pennsylvania course is playing. The two-time U.S. Open champion posted a 3-over 73 on Thursday. But his struggles are not what everyone is talking about. Instead, it is what happened on the 621-yard par-5 4th hole. The LIV Golfer's tee shot found the right bunker, which in Oakmont, is probably better than the thick rough. His second landed in the fairway, however, that is where the craziness began. 🚨 'That was dumb' Bryson's interaction with the rules official on the 4th hole — Joe I (@TourPicks) June 12, 2025 DeChambeau was granted relief as his ball came to rest where patrons walk across the fairway. He marked and picked up his ball from the fairway and engaged with the rules official, asking if he can play it from where he marked it. However, he was it informed that to avoid a penalty, he must move it back and take a free drop. DeChambeau proceeded to walk back to where he believed he must play the ball from. But instead of dropping it, he firmly placed the ball onto the ground as he said "that was dumb." (Photo by) MoreThe rules official immediately came over and reminded him that he must drop it. After dropping the ball, the 31-year-old pro hit his approach onto the green and two-putted for par. In all likelihood, it was an innocent mistake. His body language certainly made it appear to be the case. Nevertheless, it was very strange incident and not a situation golf fans are accustomed to seeing. "Not used to playing on a tour with rules," a fan on X posted. "Forgot he wasn't filming an episode of Break 50," wrote another. DeChambeau rebounded quickly, picking up birdies on No. 5 and No. 7, but dropped four shots after that to sit at 3-over. That is seven shots back of the surprising leader, JJ Spaun, who posted a bogey-free 4-under. More Golf: Red Hot Paige Spiranac Gives U.S. Open Dark Horses, Breaks Down Oakmont

87 days until the Texans' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 87?
87 days until the Texans' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 87? The Houston Texans are less than 100 days away from kicking off the 2025 season in Los Angeles against the Rams at SoFi Stadium and we're counting down the days until a victory ensues on the west coast. Texans Wire will each day tell you which player has worn the number of the day leading up to kickoff and pick the player who ensured the number best during their time at NRG Stadium. As for today, let's take a look at who has won No. 87 since the inaugural season in 2002. Texans players to wear No. 87 No. 87 currently belongs to second-year tight end Cade Stover. Drafted out of Ohio State in 2024, Stover's relationship with C.J. Stroud at Ohio State was expected to transition from Columbus to Houston last season. In spurts, one could see the chemistry between the two Buckeyes, who totaled 15 catches for 133 yards and a touchdown in 15 games. Stover did miss some time because of a shoulder injury suffered in Week 15's win over the Miami Dolphins and didn't see action in the playoffs. Fully healthy, he's been one of the more promising names at offseason workouts in the passing attack and could expand his role in the passing game this fall, eventually surpassing Dalton Schultz on the depth chart. Right now, though, Stover wasn't the best player to wear No. 87 in a Texans' uniform. TE Cade Stover (2024-present) WR Damiere Byrd (2023) TE Darren Fells (2019-2020) WR Demaryius Thomas (2018) TE C. J. Fiedorowicz (2014-2017) WR "E.Z." Nwachukwu (2013) TE Steve Skelton (2012) TE Anthony Hill (2009-2010) TE Mark Bruener (2004-2008) WR Derick Armstrong (2003) WR JaJuan Dawson (2002) Best Player: C. J. Fiedorowicz No one really stands out, but Fiedorowicz was probably the closest thing to a stable tight end since the days of Owen Daniels. The first of the Iowa tight end trends to make waves in the NFL, Fiedorowicz posted his best season in 2016, totaling 54 receptions for 559 yards and four touchdowns in 15 games. He was also essential in helping Houston make the postseason under the quarterback Brock Osweiler. But injuries derailed his career, ultimately forcing him to retire after the 2017 season. For his Texans' career, Fiedorowicz finished with 89 catches for 881 yards and six touchdowns.

New jersey number growing on Giants rookie Abdul Carter
New jersey number growing on Giants rookie Abdul Carter After failing to lure No. 56 and No. 11 out of retirement, New York Giants rookie edge rusher Abdul Carter reluctantly settled on jersey No. 51, previously worn by Azeez Ojulari, who signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency. "I feel like it's going to have to grow on me a little bit, but it's feeling good right now," Carter said. "It's pretty much what we had available. It's a good number. "I'm just happy to be out here playing football. That's all I'm worried about." After Carter's jersey drama settled, he put his head down and went to work. Throughout the offseason workout program and now into organized team activities (OTAs), Carter has drawn rave reviews from his coaches, teammates, and members of the media alike. He has been a force at practice and resembles every bit of the elite prospect the Giants thought he would be. And now, Carter is beginning to feel himself and his new number. "When you look at Abdul's versatility, you know he can affect the quarterback in multiple positions. That was the biggest thing," assistant general manager Brandon Brown said last week. "The ability to be multiple was really advantageous for us in terms of evaluating Abdul. Actually seeing true application of it. It's not a hypothetical projection, we've seen it." Lawrence Taylor told Carter to embrace his own jersey number and make it legendary. He's a long way from that but off to a solid start.
