Premier League star leaves training camp as Newcastle make their move for striker
Newcastle have stepped up their bid to sign Brentford striker Yoane Wissa after reports that the Magpies have had a £25million bid rejected for the player. The 28-year-old has left the Bees' training camp in Portugal having told the club he needs to sort out his future.
Tottenham and Nottingham Forest are both keen on the DR Congo international but Newcastle are determined to get their man having missed out on a string of transfer targets this summer.
Wissa is due to hold talks with Brentford director of football Phil Giles but following Thomas Frank's departure to Spurs, it appears that he is now looking for a move away from the Gtech Community Stadium.
The Magpies will fly out to Singapore for the first leg of their Asian tour having secured just one play - Anthony Elanga so far - with Eddie Howe openly admitting it's been a frustrating window for him.
Despite the Toon's determination to hang on to prize asset Alexander Isak amid strong interest from Liverpool, the club are intent on strengthening their squad ahead of the big kick-off.
And while Wissa's age is not ideal for a club looking to lower the age profile, they are ready to meet Brentford's valuation of around £35m.
A report from Sky Sports has claimed Newcastle believe a deal will get done after their initial offer was turned down - with the player only have one year left on his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium. It's understood he is keen to play in the Champions League and has told the Bees he is "open" to a move to St James' Park.
Brentford would be extremely reluctant to lose two key forwards, having already allowed Bryan Mbeumo to join Manchester United for around £70m this week.
The Bees dug their heels in over Mbeumo, who they signed for just £5m back in 2019, as they demanded a substantial fee following his superb displays last season that saw him score 20 goals in the Premier League.
Having already snapped up Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m, Brentford demanded a higher fee that would justify Mbeumo's superior season over the Brazilian.
Losing both Mbeumo and Wissa would be a massive blow to new boss Keith Andrews, who has a huge task ahead of him to keep the team away from relegation.
Brentford will face QPR and Borussia Monchengladbach in pre-season before their Premier League opener away at Nottingham Forest on August 17.

Newcastle reject formal bid from Liverpool for Alexander Isak
Newcastle have rejected an offer from Liverpool for striker Alexander Isak. The Sweden international has told the Carabao Cup winners he wants to explore the possibility of a move away from St James' Park and Liverpool, who had made an inquiry about the 25-year-old last month, followed it up with a formal bid. Isak would be expected to command a price of over £100m and more than the club record sum Liverpool have paid for Florian Wirtz this summer. Newcastle had long maintained that Isak was not for sale, but Liverpool are testing that position and manager Eddie Howe has admitted his top scorer's future could be out of his hands. Howe left Isak out of the defeat to Celtic because of speculation and Isak missed Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia with what the club described as a minor thigh injury, while he has been training with his former club Real Sociedad in a bid to return to fitness.
