Premier League star leaves training camp as Newcastle make their move for striker

Daily Mirror22-07-2025
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is eager to sign a new forward to complement Alexander Isak next season and the club are going all in for Brentford's Yoane Wissa after missing out on Hugo Ekitike
Newcastle have stepped up their bid to sign Brentford striker Yoane Wissa after reports that the Magpies have had a £25million bid rejected for the player. The 28-year-old has left the Bees' training camp in Portugal having told the club he needs to sort out his future.

Tottenham and Nottingham Forest are both keen on the DR Congo international but Newcastle are determined to get their man having missed out on a string of transfer targets this summer.

Wissa is due to hold talks with Brentford director of football Phil Giles but following Thomas Frank's departure to Spurs, it appears that he is now looking for a move away from the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Magpies will fly out to Singapore for the first leg of their Asian tour having secured just one play - Anthony Elanga so far - with Eddie Howe openly admitting it's been a frustrating window for him.
Despite the Toon's determination to hang on to prize asset Alexander Isak amid strong interest from Liverpool, the club are intent on strengthening their squad ahead of the big kick-off.
And while Wissa's age is not ideal for a club looking to lower the age profile, they are ready to meet Brentford's valuation of around £35m.
A report from Sky Sports has claimed Newcastle believe a deal will get done after their initial offer was turned down - with the player only have one year left on his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium. It's understood he is keen to play in the Champions League and has told the Bees he is "open" to a move to St James' Park.
Brentford would be extremely reluctant to lose two key forwards, having already allowed Bryan Mbeumo to join Manchester United for around £70m this week.

The Bees dug their heels in over Mbeumo, who they signed for just £5m back in 2019, as they demanded a substantial fee following his superb displays last season that saw him score 20 goals in the Premier League.
Having already snapped up Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m, Brentford demanded a higher fee that would justify Mbeumo's superior season over the Brazilian.
Losing both Mbeumo and Wissa would be a massive blow to new boss Keith Andrews, who has a huge task ahead of him to keep the team away from relegation.
Brentford will face QPR and Borussia Monchengladbach in pre-season before their Premier League opener away at Nottingham Forest on August 17.

Borussia Dortmund have reservations over re-signing Jadon Sancho from Man Utd

Manchester United's plan to sell Jadon Sancho has taken another blow with Borussia Dortmund reportedly getting cold feet over the transfer. Earlier this summer, the winger was one of five United players told they have no future in Ruben Amorim's team. Marcus Rashford has left for Barcelona but the club is struggling to offload Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia. Sancho spent last season on loan at Chelsea and looked set to join them permanently, only for the Blues to pay a £5million penalty to cancel the transfer. Juventus have been linked with the former Three Lions star all summer but it is said they have now cooled their interest, while Dortmund are now considering whether to sign Sancho for a third time. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. His first spell in Germany, after joining from Manchester City's academy, was a great success, recording 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 games, form that lead to the ill-fated £73m move to Old Trafford. The 25-year-old returned on loan for the second-half of the 2023/24 season after his public fallout with Erik ten Hag and helped Dortmund reach the Champions League final. Sancho is willing to slash his wages by half in order to facilitate a move, while United's asking price has fallen to around £17m as they look to cash-in on the forward, whose contract expires next year. While this should make a transfer to Dortmund more financially viable, Sky Sports Germany report that the Bundesliga giants have some reservations over doing a deal. It is said that though they admire Sancho, they are wary of being criticised for a lack of creativity in the transfer market, especially after an underwhelming 2024/25 campaign. Moreover, there are question marks over the player due to him being rejected by both United and Chelsea, despite his obvious talent. More Trending Dortmund manager Niko Kovac has refused to discuss the prospect of signing the 23-cap England star, but sporting director Sebastian Kehl has confirmed it is possibility. '[Sancho] is constantly being linked with us. I understand the desire,' Kehl said. 'We're thinking about it within our possibilities. The conditions have to be right. We will definitely do something, but we're limited. 'We have various targets. We have a few days left.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Newcastle reject formal bid from Liverpool for Alexander Isak

Newcastle have rejected an offer from Liverpool for striker Alexander Isak. The Sweden international has told the Carabao Cup winners he wants to explore the possibility of a move away from St James' Park and Liverpool, who had made an inquiry about the 25-year-old last month, followed it up with a formal bid. Isak would be expected to command a price of over £100m and more than the club record sum Liverpool have paid for Florian Wirtz this summer. Newcastle had long maintained that Isak was not for sale, but Liverpool are testing that position and manager Eddie Howe has admitted his top scorer's future could be out of his hands. Howe left Isak out of the defeat to Celtic because of speculation and Isak missed Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia with what the club described as a minor thigh injury, while he has been training with his former club Real Sociedad in a bid to return to fitness. Liverpool have spent around £250m this summer, which can rise to £300m including add-ons and the deal for goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, which was announced last year, but the Premier League champions are determined to be ambitious in their recruitment and head coach Arne Slot has said they will target the best players. They have brought in around £130m this summer, with the £65.5m sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich meaning they have lost one attacker. The Colombian spent some of last season operating as a centre-forward and scored 17 goals in the campaign. However, Liverpool have already paid an initial £69m for Hugo Ekitike, who they see primarily as a No 9 and who was also a target for Newcastle. Newcastle have also been frustrated in their attempts to buy a host of other forwards, including Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Bryan Mbeumo but while they are interested in Brentford's Yoane Wissa, they are yet to conclude a deal for him, while their only major signing this transfer window is winger Anthony Elanga. Isak scored 23 Premier League goals for Newcastle last season as well as a Carabao Cup final strike against Liverpool. He has three years left on his contract at Newcastle but is now unlikely to sign an extension.
