Hello! And welcome along to The Athletic where we are covering the highest-stakes pre-season fixture: the UEFA Super Cup.
First-time Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain are taking on Tottenham Hotspur of Europa League glory in northwestern Italy.
It feels a bit of a mismatch given how easily the French giants streamrolled their way through Europe's premier competition and given there is a new manager in charge of Spurs. But the north Londoners will be desperate to go back to back with trophy glory.
Still a good while until kick-off in Udine, so stick with us for all the build-up.

Erik Lamela retires, joining Sevilla coaching staff

It's been a sad summer with regards to my all-time favorite Tottenham Hotspur players. First Son Heung-Min left the club to finish his career with LAFC in MLS, and now this — according to journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, former Tottenham attacking midfielder Erik Lamela has terminated his contract with AEK Athens and retired. He now plans to join the coaching staff at Sevilla. If you don't like Erik Lamela, you have no soul (or you joined the fandom too late). Now 33, it's clear Erik was nearing the end of his playing days, but it's still sad to see of your favorites hang up his boots. That said, this feels like a real missed opportunity for Tottenham and Thomas Frank. Surely Spurs could use Dark Arts and Shithousery Coach, right? Lamela practically has a PhD in the subjects and I hate the idea of him imparting his skills onto the next generation of Sevilla footballers and not that of his beloved Spurs. There's a whole generation of young Tottenham academy players who could absolutely benefit from learning how to steal water bottles from opposition physios, the best way to step on Cesc Fabregas' hand while pretending it was accidental, the art of slide-tackling opponents inside your own box, rabona goal instruction, and calling Jack Wilshere a p***y. Football is that much poorer without him on the pitch, but at least he's still in the game. And who knows, maybe someday we'll see Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Erik Lamela someday. Wouldn't THAT be something? Go on, king.

Report – Inter Milan Eyeing Up Roma Midfielder As Talks For Atalanta Talisman Stall

Inter Milan are reportedly considering a move for Roma midfieleder Manu Kone with talks for Ademola Lookman at a standstill. This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews. They report that the Nerazzurri may change their strategy if they're unable to sign Lookman. Inter Milan have been trying to sign for a better part of a month now. However, as Sky Sport Italia note, there have been no contacts between the Nerazzurri and Atalanta for a week now. Therefore, Inter now feel that their pursuit of Lookman has completely stalled. (Photo by) In the meantime, Inter are considering a change in strategy, reports Sky Sport Italia. The Nerazzurri have been very happy with the performances by Ange-Yoan Bonny and Francesco Pio Esposito in training. Furthermore, Inter have plenty of midfielders who can play in an attacking midfield role. These include Davide Frattesi, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Piotr Zielinski, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Nicola Zalewski. Therefore, Inter may well have enough options to fill the attacking position in Cristian Chivu's 3-4-2-1 formation. On the other hand, there are persistent doubts about whether the Nerazzurri have enough defensive steel and athleticism in holding midfield. Therefore, reports Sky Sport Italia, Inter could instead shift gears to target Roma midfielder Manu Kone.

Spurs' Carter Bryant honors family member with jersey number selection

.@carterdbryant is a gamer, on and off the court 🏀 🎮 | @spurs Rookie Carter Bryant will begin his career in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs with a new jersey number after wearing No. 9 as a freshman last season at Arizona. Bryant wore it in various events before joining the Wildcats, such as the McDonald's All-American Game and the Pangos All-American Camp. He was forced to change it upon joining the Spurs, with it retired to honor Hall of Famer Tony Parker. The 14th pick also wore a few other numbers, though each one was taken on the team. He opted to go with No. 11, which is the same number his uncle wore. "I wanted nine," Bryant said. "Obviously, Tony Parker has nine retired. (De'Aaron) Fox has four. Steph Castle has five. Dylan (Harper) got two. I was a Kawhi fan, so I was trying to get the two. Vic (Wembanyama) got one, so then I went through all of the numbers I liked and which ones looked good. My uncle ended up wearing No. 11 playing pro volleyball overseas, so I went with 11." Bryant helped the Wildcats to the Sweet 16, averaging 6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and one assist on 37.1% shooting from 3-point range. He scored in double figures five times, including a season-high-tying 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks on Jan. 27. The 19-year-old logged six appearances with the Spurs in summer league, averaging 7.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.2 assists on 28.6% shooting from the field. He wrapped up his stay with a 16-point, five-rebound performance on July 17. Bryant has ingratiated himself well within the local community after volunteering at a couple of events this offseason. The team was excited to add him and is eager to watch him hit the court. Note: Throughout August, Rookie Wire is looking at every first-round pick and why each player selected their respective jersey number as they make the jump to the NBA.
