In South Indian films, it's emotion that carries the content, says Sonia Birje
Sonia Birje, daughter of Adventures of Tarzan fame actor Hemant Birje, has worked in Hindi and Telugu films and is now making her Kannada cinema debut with Psyche. She recently shot a special dance number in Mysore for the film, directed by Mahesh Devu. 'WORKING IN THE KANNADA INDUSTRY FELT NATURAL AND COMFORTABLE' Although her full-fledged role will appear in the film's second part, Sonia enjoyed her experience on Psyche. 'The choreography team and dancers were so supportive. I'm not familiar with the language, but they made me feel at home,' she says. She is learning Kannada and hopes to dub her lines herself. 'An actor's voice is important. I'd love to deliver my dialogues in my voice for the second part,' she adds. 'THE SOUTH FILM INDUSTRY IS MORE EMOTIONALLY DRIVEN' Having worked in Hindi and Telugu cinema, Sonia sees a defining difference. 'South industries, both Telugu and Kannada, are more emotion-driven—that's their biggest strength. In Bollywood, some stories lean more on style. Here, it's emotion that carries the content,' she tells us. 'I EARNED EVERY OPPORTUNITY, IT DIDN'T COME TO ME BECAUSE OF DAD' Addressing assumptions about nepotism, Sonia is clear that the opportunities she's gotten is because of her hard work. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What Happens When You Massage Baking Soda Into Your Scalp Read More Undo 'There was no nepotism in my case; nothing was handed over to me. I've worked hard for every single opportunity. Some projects didn't release, which was heartbreaking, but my Telugu films happened purely on merit. People respect me because of my father, but it hasn't translated into jobs—otherwise, I'd have done many more films by now,' she avers. 'BREAKING INTO THE INDUSTRY IS A VERY BIG CHALLENGING' Sonia admits the industry has its challenges. 'Even if you deserve a role, you might not get called. The camps people talk about are real, and breaking into them is difficult. Deserving talent often doesn't even get to audition,' she says. 'When preparation meets opportunity, magic happens. Luck plays a role too — sometimes it's written for you, sometimes it's not. But you must keep honing your craft and keep showing up,' she laments.

Siblings Ragini and Rudraksh Dwivedi celebrate their unbreakable bond this Raksha Bandhan
For actress Ragini Dwivedi , Raksha Bandhan isn't just a one-day affair – it's a year-round celebration of the one person who truly gets her: her brother Rudraksh, a Mumbai-based celebrity fashion designer. 'Rudraksh was my first best friend, and he has always been the most important person in my life,' says Ragini. The feeling is mutual. 'Ragini has been my pillar of strength,' says Rudraksh. We sit down with the duo to talk about what makes their sibling bond so strong. Excerpts: 'WE ARE EACH OTHER'S CONSTANTS' Describing the bond she shares with her brother, Ragini says, 'I don't usually care much for other people's opinions, but when he speaks, I listen. He's the only one who can say whatever he wants. And actually get away with it!' Rudraksh adds, 'I'll tell her to her face if I think she's done something wrong. I'd much rather be honest with her than sit in a room where she's not around and listen to people talk behind her back. ' The duo comes from an Army background. This meant growing up, they were always moving from place to place. 'No matter where we went, having each other was a blessing. Plus, with just a 1.5-year age gap, we basically grew up side by side,' Ragini says. Rudraksh agrees, 'Through all the changes, Ragini has been my one constant.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Female Athletes Right Now Undo Ragini sometimes acts like my second mom and other times like a small child — and I cherish every side of her equally – Rudraksh Dwivedi 'OUR PERSONALITIES ARE THE EXACT OPPOSITE' Ragini and Rudraksh prove that different personalities can create the strongest bonds. We have been a little dishonest with our cinema: Aahana Kumra
Aahana Kumra Cinema is going through a dull phase, and the only way to rise above it is to make honest cinema, believes Bollywood actor Aahana Kumra . 'We have been a little dishonest with our cinema. We are basically churning out the same stories. Audiences now want to experience new topics, and unless you give them that, they will not go to the theatres,' she tells Bangalore Times. Excerpts from a conversation with the actor, who was the showstopper at the latest edition of Bangalore Times Fashion Week. 'ACTORS NEED TO MAINTAIN SOME MYSTERY' You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru 'An actor's job is to be a part of cinema that people can consume; they embody a role. An influencer's job is to share their lives on social media, be it through reels or dance videos. I think that an actor loses value when they begin to do an influencer's job. Also, it is only in India that influencers are considered for roles because of their fan following. This is rarely seen in the West,' she shares. 'BY RELEASING A MOVIE ON OTT TOO SOON, YOU RUIN THE SURPRISE' Reflecting on the evolving relationship between audiences and the big screen, Aahana says, 'Everyone knows they can just wait a month or two to watch a movie at home. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ranked: The 25 Best Cities To Live In The World Learn More Undo So, why would they spend money and energy to go watch it in theatres? As a theatre artiste, I feel the reason our shows are packed is because it's not going to be on TV, so the audience has to come to the show to know the story.' 'I AM PICKY ABOUT WORK. I WILL NOT SAY YES TO EVERYTHING' The actor tells us she has been selective about her projects in recent years. 'I have done some good work over the years, but I've not said yes to anything in the past three years. I want to do roles that people will remember me for,' she says, and adds, 'I never stopped doing theatre. It's something that gives me joy. I also enrolled in a lot of classes to keep myself busy and to upskill myself.' 'IT'S TIME NEW FACES ARE CONSIDERED FOR ROLES' She doesn't hold back when it comes to calling out gender disparities in casting. 'Be it OTT or cinema, there are a hundred roles written for men, while there are very few of them for women. And so many female actors fight for that one role. Then, you see the same faces being repeated; it's like they don't want to consider anyone else. Why would you take a modern woman for the role of a village belle from Uttar Pradesh? Why not cast people according to what the role demands," she adds. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
