New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): Australian all-rounder Mitchell Owen is on verge of a world record, as with one more 'Player of the Match' award during the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC), he will join Bangladesh legend Shakib al Hasan as player with most successive POTM honours in T20 cricket.
While representing Washington Freedom in the ongoing MLC tournament, he secured his fourth consecutive POTM against San Francisco Unicorns, taking a brilliant 5/17 to reduce the opponents to 157/9 in their 20 overs in pursuit of 170 runs. However, he scored a first-ball duck with the bat.
One more will help him join Shakib as the player with the joint-most-successive POTMs in T20s, with a total of five, as per Wisden.
Previously, against the Los Angeles Knight Riders, he scored a quickfire 43 in 16 balls (three fours and four sixes) to successfully chase down 214 runs and had bowling figures of 0/47. Before this, against the Texas Super Kings, he first took 3/33 with the ball, following it with a 52-ball 89 (eight fours and five sixes) to chase down a massive 221 runs. Against MI New York, he took 1/29 and scored a fiery 60 in 26 balls, with five fours and five sixes to chase down 189 runs for his side to earn the POTM honours.
In the ongoing MLC, Owen is the second-highest run-getter, with 288 runs in seven matches at an average of 41.14 and a strike rate of 210.21, with two fifties. He is also the second-highest wicket-taker with 14 scalps at an average of 14.35.
Owen rose to fame with a century for Hobart Hurricanes (108 in 42 balls with six fours and 11 sixes) to win them their first-ever Big Bash League (BBL) title. He is now the eighth man to win POTM in four consecutive T20 matches. (ANI)

Coach PR Sreejesh shares his insights on India's campaign for FIH Junior Hockey World Cup 2025

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 30 (ANI): India Junior Hockey Team coach PR Sreejesh on Monday shared his thoughts on the recently announced Pools for the upcoming FIH Hockey Men's Junior World Cup, 2025. 'Our Pool B presents a good challenge, with Pakistan, Chile, and Switzerland. While I expect the match against Pakistan will be interesting, the tournament will really start from the Quarterfinals. Therefore, we will take each game as it comes, one step at a time and grab as many points as we can to secure the best spot in the Quarterfinals,' he said. He also spoke about his thoughts and plans on playing the FIH Hockey Men's Junior World Cup, 2025, in the new expanded format, saying, 'This is the first time the FIH Hockey Men's Junior World Cup, 2025 has been expanded to 24 teams, and we're planning our preparations accordingly. Playing in this new format will be very exciting.' The upcoming 14th edition of the FIH Men's Junior Hockey World Cup has been expanded to 24 teams competing for the coveted title, up from 16 teams that competed in previous editions. This will be the first time that 24 teams will be competing in the World Cup. The FIH Men's Junior Hockey World Cup was initially a 12-team tournament, which expanded to 16 teams from the 2001 edition onwards. Under the new competition format for the FIH Hockey Men's Junior World Cup 2025, teams will be divided into six pools (A-F) with 4 teams in each Pool. Each team plays the other teams in their pool and earns points based on the results. Teams are ranked within their pool based on the points earned and will proceed to Crossover Matches, where teams that finish third and fourth in each pool will play crossover matches to determine their final rankings. The top 2 teams from each pool will qualify for the Quarterfinals, which will be played in a knockout format to progress to the Semifinals and the Final. Teams eliminated in the quarterfinals will play classification matches to determine their final ranking (5-8) while Teams that lose in the crossover matches will play classification matches to determine their final ranking (9-16) and Teams that finish at the bottom of their pool will play classification matches to determine their final ranking (17-24). In the last edition of the FIH Men's Junior Hockey World Cup, 2023, India missed the podium and finished fourth; their best results came in 2001 and 2016, when they won the Men's Junior Hockey World Cup titles. Germany has been the most successful team in the Men's Junior Hockey World Cup, having won the title seven times. They are also currently the defending champions, having won the FIH Men's Junior Hockey World Cup title in 2023. (ANI)

Ireland women promoted to FIH Hockey Pro League

Lausanne [Switzerland], June 30 (ANI): The International Hockey Federation (FIH) confirmed that the 'Green Army' - Ireland's national hockey team - will join the FIH Hockey Pro League for the 2025-26 season. It will be the first time that the finalists of the 2018 FIH Hockey Women's World Cup will join the 'League of the Best'. Ireland was promoted through the FIH Hockey Nations Cup played in Chile earlier this year. Whilst New Zealand won that event against Ireland in the final, Hockey New Zealand later indicated that the Black Sticks would not proceed with the invitation to join Pro League this time. Therefore, as stipulated in the regulations, FIH extended the invitation to the runners-up, namely Ireland, who have confirmed their participation, a release said. FIH President Tayyab Ikram said: 'Congratulations to the Ireland Women's team for joining the next season of the FIH Hockey Pro League! It's wonderful to see a new team participating in the 'League of the Best'. Qualifying through the FIH Hockey Nations Cup confirms how much the latter is a great springboard to join hockey's elite.' Speaking after the announcement, Ireland Women's Head Coach Gareth Grundie said: 'I am delighted that we have been given the opportunity to participate in the FIH Pro League 2025/26 Season 7. It's a testament to the quality of play this team has achieved to date and is an excellent and invaluable opportunity for further improvement. It comes at an ideal time for us as a programme also, pitting us against the World's best teams as we go in search of qualification for the 2026 FIH World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium.' Finishing the 2024-25 Women's Pro League season in last place of the rankings, India is relegated to the FIH Hockey Nations Cup. On the men's side, following the Black Sticks' victory at the recent Nations Cup in Malaysia, FIH has extended an invitation to Hockey New Zealand for their men's team to join Pro League again next season. Since New Zealand's hockey governing body is currently undertaking a thorough analysis and decision-making process in this regard, FIH has approved their request for an extension of the deadline to confirm or decline their participation until July 21, the release said. Should New Zealand eventually decide not to participate, the runners-up of the Men's Nations Cup, namely Pakistan, would have the opportunity to consider joining the 2025-26 FIH Hockey Pro League season. Pro Wrestling League returns after six years: Season 5 to be held in December, say sources

By Vipul Kashyap New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): The fifth season of Pro Wrestling League (PWL) is all set to return after six years in December this year. The league was last played in 2019. After that, due to COVID, the Olympics and their preparation were postponed to next year and later, as the players were busy with other matters. 'Yes, we are all set to bring our league back, likely in December 2025. This week, we have a meeting with all officials involved in this matter. The league will have an all-new franchise with new buyers, and a fresh auction will also be held,' sources with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) told ANI. This league has consistently enabled our players to compete against international players, which positively impacts their performance in international-level tournaments, they added. PWL, an initiative of ProSportify and the WFI, is the biggest Olympic Wrestling League in the country. The Pro Wrestling League (PWL) was launched in 2015 with an aim of reviving the popular Indian sport of 'kushti' (wrestling), tapping the enormous talent for the sport hidden away in remote corners of the country and re-introducing wrestling in India in a new and modern avatar. It has so far provided a great platform for India's young and talented players to compete and learn from Olympic and World champions in close quarters. Established since 2015, PWL have completed four editions. In the previous PWL season, there were six competing teams, including Delhi Sultans, UP Dangal, Haryana Hammers, MP Yodha, Mumbai Maharathi and the NCR Punjab Royals, as per the PWL official website. The PWL Season 4 featured participants from 15 nationalities, spanning Asia, Europe, Africa, and the American continent. Haryana Hammers lifted the title by defeating two-time defending champion Punjab Royals. Similarly, in 2018, the third edition of the league proved to be an unprecedented hit as it became the most popular league in the country after cricket. The PWL 3 reached over 85 crore viewers across India in over 36 hrs. (ANI)
