Crystal Palace lose appeal against Uefa and will play in Conference League
Both sides have been told by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that they must bear their own costs, suggesting that it was a close decision.
Palace, led by chairman Steve Parish, pleaded their case at the CAS on Friday after they were demoted to the Conference League last month. The club were originally demoted to the third-tier European competition by Uefa's Club Financial Control Body because at the time then Palace investor John Textor also had a stake in Lyon. The Ligue 1 club, who also qualified for the second-tier continental competition, were allowed to compete ahead of Palace.
Parish said it was 'a terrible injustice' based on 'the most ridiculous technicality you can imagine'. Ahead of the verdict, Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson said the club's drop from the Europa League would 'devalue the competition'.
Textor has now sold Eagle's Palace stake to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson.
Palace qualified for European competition by virtue of their FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City, and the south London club added the Community Shield to their trophy collection on Sunday with a penalty shoot-out victory over Premier League champions Liverpool in the season curtain-raiser.
However, their joy at that triumph has now been severely tempered by Monday's verdict.

Chiesa was Liverpool's only arrival last summer but it was a frustrating campaign for the winger. Fitness issues and difficulty breaking into the starting line-up meant his game time was severely limited. There were flashes of his undoubted talent, including a goal in the League Cup final, but he was also part of the dismal FA Cup exit against Plymouth. If Liverpool are unable to sign any more attackers this transfer window, Chiesa seems likely to stay at Anfield and have the chance to give a greater account of himself this term.

Chelsea interested in signing second Man Utd star after Alejandro Garnacho
Chelsea are interested in signing a second Manchester United star after Alejandro Garnacho, according to reports. Garnacho has already given the green light to a summer move to Stamford Bridge but Chelsea are yet to agree terms with their Premier League rivals. United are holding out for £50m for the Argentina international but Chelsea are reluctant to meet that price given Garnacho is in Ruben Amorim's 'bomb squad'. Not too long ago Garnacho was viewed as one of the most highly-rated players at Old Trafford but his career has stagnated. Amorim has instructed his bosses to offload the winger and was unhappy with comments Garnacho and his brother made following the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. The system, the manager? Is he not happy with the environment at the football club? 'There are so many factors you have to look at right now with Manchester United. If those are two players Chelsea want, I will take those two, definitely. 'They can only come in and improve us as a football club. I know if they come in, they will improve us as a team.' Manchester United legend Gary Neville, meanwhile, believes it is imperative that the Red Devils keep hold of Mainoo and 'build a team' around the youngster. 'Mainoo, no. That's a step too far,' the eight-time Premier League winner argued.
