Kirby Smart praises Gunner Stockton's leadership but he's not crowned Georgia's QB1 yet
Smart said Stockton's commitment to preparation is one of the things he admires most.
'He prepared every game as if he was the starter,' Smart said Tuesday at SEC media days. 'People can say that and say that's coach-speak, but he actually did it. He went in, watched extra tape, and he knew that in any point in time, he could be called up to go into the game and play.'
Stockton finished the 2024 season with 45 completions for 440 yards, a touchdown and an interception in five games: He stepped in for an injured Carson Beck and led the Bulldogs to a 22-19 overtime victory over Texas in the SEC Championship and started in the Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame. He was was 20 of 32 for 234 yards and a TD in the playoff semifinal.
It was enough to give Smart confidence that Beck's successor was already in the quarterback room.
'He didn't play in a normal environment where you've got a big lead, maybe you're beating an opponent,' Smart said. 'He went in against a top defense in the country in one of the biggest games of the season and performed well for a guy that had not gotten a lot of reps with the (starters). So I thought he handled that moment well and he taught a lot of our young players that you've got to be prepared and ready.'
Stockton earned the short trip to Atlanta for this week's event and was peppered with more questions than teammates CJ Allen and Daylen Everette.
'(Bringing Stockton) was a message about leadership,' said Smart. 'He's separated himself as a great leader of the team and you try to bring people here that can affect others. He's done that in spring practice.'
The starting job isn't necessarily a layup for Stockton. Ryan Puglisi is eyeing the role too.
'Ryan is doing awesome too. Ryan and (Stockton) are going to be competing for everything they do. Gunner knows he's got to go out and play well,' Smart said.
If Stockton stays the course, the offense will be his to lead on Aug. 30, when Georgia hosts Marshall in the season opener.
'He's done a tremendous job this summer. Talked to the staff about it and felt like the play he had at the end of the year last year… what he's done this spring, he deserved to come. He is the guy that leads that offense right now,' Smart said.

GENEVA (AP) — On a night of goals and drama for two veteran star strikers, Cristiani Girelli got the better of Ada Hegerberg to send Italy into the semifinals of the Women's European Championship on Wednesday. She also scored one of the goals of the tournament, curling in a 22-meter yard shot against Portugal that shaped to be decisive in the group stage until Italy conceded an 89th-minute equalizer. It was Italy that finished strong in the first knockout round and no one more than Girelli. Hegerberg on the spot The Norway star has taken two penalty kicks at Euro 2025 and missed both, placing her two shots wide of each post. She also scored in each of those games. Eligibility of Wisconsin's Nyzier Fourqurean in question after appeals court reverses injunction
MADISON, Wisc. (AP) — Wisconsin cornerback Nyzier Fourqurean's status for this coming season is now unclear after a federal appeals court overturned a preliminary injunction that granted him another year of NCAA eligibility. Seventh Circuit judges ruled in a 2-1 decision rendered Wednesday to reverse the ruling by a lower court, after the NCAA appealed. Fourqurean, a fifth-year senior, had argued that his first two college seasons at Division II Grand Valley State should not count toward his eligibility. Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia is expected to play again after winning his court case last year on the grounds that his two seasons at a junior college do not count. The NCAA is appealing that decision but granted a blanket waiver that will allow Pavia and other athletes who played at non-NCAA Division I schools prior to enrollment an extra year of eligibility if they were going to exhaust their eligibility this year. The path forward for Fourqurean, a projected starter, is less clear with Wisconsin's season opener against Miami (Ohio) on Aug. 28 just over six weeks away. Messages sent to attorneys listed as his representatives in court documents, as well as spokespeople for Wisconsin football, were not immediately returned. Fourqurean testified during a U.S. District Court hearing in February that he would make 'hundreds of thousands of dollars' in name, image and likeness compensation if he were to play this season. Lamine Yamal to wear Barcelona's iconic No. 10 jersey next season
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Lamine Yamal will switch to the No. 10 jersey at Barcelona, the same number Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi wore for the Catalan club. 'I'll try to build my own path, but all kids would like to be like them,' Yamal said Wednesday at the club's announcement. 'All three have been incredible players, they're legends, and I'll try to follow in their footsteps.' Having turned 18, Yamal was able to sign the contract extension that he had agreed with Barcelona in May, keeping him in place until 2031. 'My goal is to keep winning and growing,' Yamal said. 'It's the club of my life. It's my home, I've been here since I was 7 years old.' Yamal wore the No. 19 jersey last season.
