
Our teenage son was targeted by a sextortionist online – here's what we did
It was after midnight last November when Simon's son burst into his parents' bedroom and told them 'something terrible's happened'. Sixteen-year-old Nathan had been targeted by online criminals in a sextortion scam.
'We've had lots of conversations about this stuff with him over the years, but don't think that your child is too sensible to do this,' said Simon.
The anonymous blackmailer was initially demanding £50 – messaging then repeatedly calling the frightened teenager – or he would share Nathan's intimate image with all his contacts.
'He was very upset, I'd say hysterical at the start, but after an hour or so he'd calmed down. He said his main worry was what we would think, and once he'd established that we were on his side that was like a massive weight off his shoulders.'
Staying calm was the key, said Simon, looking back at how he and his wife handled the crisis. 'She started Googling what to do and pretty quickly discovered Report Remove.'
Report Remove, which is run by the NSPCC and the Internet Watch Foundation, allows children to anonymously flag intimate images or videos of themselves that they have been tricked into sending to sextortion criminals. The service then turns those images into a 'hash', or digital fingerprint, which is shared with large tech platforms, which can take the image down or prevent it from being uploaded.
'We're only human,' said Simon, 'and at the start we did say: 'You should know better than this.' But then what I tried to do was downplay it – and I suspect it's different with daughters – but I said to my son: 'It's your standard dick pic, it's nothing perverted or illegal that's going to ruin your career.' At worst if they send it it's going to be very embarrassing but it's not going to be life-wrecking, and that reassured him. I even suggested that he should write a standard message to send to all his contacts if they did share it.'
Fortunately for Nathan, the blackmailer moved on within a few hours, while the process of uploading the image to Report Remove was 'psychologically important, it gave him something to hang on to', said Simon.
'When I was talking to the officer from the child exploitation online protection unit, she told me probably the majority of teenagers have done this, which is both comforting and pretty terrible. It's ridiculously common.'
Simon's advice is to have 'an open dialogue' with your children. 'We have an agreement that we are able to look at their phone because that's a basic part of parenting now. It's not snooping, it's not invasion of their privacy, it's basic duty of care, but you need to have the agreement upfront.'
For young people, the biggest takeaway from Nathan's experience is to get parents involved at the earliest possible stage, Simon added. 'Don't try to manage the situation yourself. Definitely don't get drawn into a dialogue with the blackmailer.'
But teenagers themselves often say that, while they would want to get help from their parents if they were a victim of this increasingly common form of blackmail, they worry that they would not know how to help them or even know what sextortion is.
So says Lyndsay McDade, who has spent the past year working with young people, their parents and carers on how best to communicate the dangers of online blackmail.
Last November, a series of social media clips created by young people to inform their peers about sextortion was launched by Fearless Scotland, the youth service of the charity Crimestoppers, which McDade manages.
The teenagers who developed the online content said it was important to use language that young people could understand, keep the messages fast-paced and not scare them unnecessarily, in contrast to previous awareness-raising campaigns that 'all looked like they'd been designed by old people trying to be young'.
Since then the youth ads have been viewed nearly 9m times on social media, and McDade said there was clearly appetite for more youth-focused information.
The second phase of the Fearless Scotland campaign is focusing on parents and carers. 'It's clear that parents are often confused by the technology their young people are using and don't understand the different ways to keep their children safe online,' she said.
'Our main message is to keep talking to young people about this issue. Don't have one conversation and assume that's it. Make conversations about your online activity part of your daily life – it could simply be a funny video you've both seen or a new trend. Check out their followers. If they've got huge numbers, do they know these people in real life or are they strangers? Help your child to see that even if you don't know the answer, you love them and whatever happens, you're there for them and you'll navigate it together.'

It can be hard for parents who are working or have errands to run during the holidays to always find care for their children. 3 3 Even nipping to the shops quickly can tough with kids, but leaving them at home could lead to trouble for the parents. So the question is - at what age can you legally leave children at home on their own in England? Currently, there is no law to say what age when you can leave a child on their own, but it is a criminal offence to leave a child alone if it places them at risk. You can be fined or sent to jail if caught. This is because it is a crime to leave a child unsupervised "in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury to health". The government recommends parents use their own judgement on how mature their child is before leaving them alone, whether it's at home or in a car. The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) gives a more comprehensive guide. "Every child matures differently, so it would be almost impossible to have a 'one size fits all' law," it says on its website. The NSPCC recommends children under the age of 12 are rarely mature enough to be left alone for a long period of time. Children under 16 years of age should not be left alone in a property overnight. Essential Guidelines for Leaving Children Home Alone in England In addition, babies, toddlers and very young children should never be left alone. The NPCC's Helen Westerman went into greater detail and said parents needed to take into consideration a couple of critical factors. This includes how they feel about their children playing outside unsupervised, and also how their child feels about it themselves. WHAT TO CONSIDER HELEN has said that parents should consider these six things if they are deciding to leave their child home alone. 1. Are they prepared to be left home alone? - Think about how your child would handle an emergency situation if they are home alone. Helen says: "Think about if they can deal with risks, will they behave responsibly, will they be safe?" 2. Undertake prudent measures - Think about the key steps that you would need to take to make sure your child has everything they need, like spare keys and access to food and a bathroom. 3. Never leave babies or toddlers on their own 4. Be in the know about their unsupervised outings - When your child is out on their own, make sure you know where they are going, who they are with, what they are doing and how far they're travelling. 5. Share essential contact info - Helen says: "Make sure they know a trusted adult's full name and address, and have two trusted adults' phone numbers." 6. Prepare your child - Make sure your child knows how to handle different situations. Helen advises: "Ask them what they'd do if they hurt themselves or if a stranger knocks on the door." "Lots of parents will be thinking about whether it's safe to leave their children at home safely, and if they're old enough to leave the house unsupervised," she told the Liverpool Echo. "As well as determining if a child is ready to be left alone, many parents will also find balancing work with the school break quite challenging, especially considering the rising child costs and the cost of living crisis, which is placing additional strain on families." Helen added: "As children get older, it's common for them to want more freedom and learn to be independent. "This is an important part of growing up, but we know there can be a lot to think about for parents. Legal age parents can leave children alone as summer holidays approach and what NSPCC advises Parents may be wondering if their child is ready to stay at home alone or go out unsupervised this summer Many parents grapple with tough choices when it comes to their children, one of which is determining the appropriate age for their children to stay at home without adult supervision. During school holidays parents often find themselves needing to arrange child care. This could involve relying on family members or shelling out for holiday clubs but some parents might deem their child mature enough to stay at home alone. Whilst there's no legal age stipulated for when children can be left at home unsupervised it's illegal to leave a child alone if it puts them in danger. As we approach the summer holidays we checked guidance published by the NSPCC to assist parents in making informed decisions during the summer break. Helen Westerman, the NSPCC's head of local campaigns, said, "a child who doesn't feel comfortable shouldn't be left alone". She said this is why making a universal legal age is impractical as some children, albeit the same age, have different levels of maturity. Parents must also consider if it's safe for their children to play outside without supervision, reports the Liverpool Echo.. She provided advice for parents and carers considering leaving their children home alone or allowing them to go out unaccompanied during the summer. Are they ready to be left home alone? Parents should consider whether their child is prepared to handle being unsupervised, especially in the event of an emergency. Ms Westerman said: "Think about if they can deal with risks; will they behave responsibly, and will they be safe? And, perhaps most importantly, how does your child feel about this idea?" Take sensible precautions If you're contemplating the idea of your child staying at home alone make sure to take safety measures such as providing them with a spare set of keys and ensuring they can access food and the bathroom. Ms Westerman added: "Consider if there's anything that could hurt them and how you could reduce that risk." Never leave infants or little ones by themselves It is crucial that infants and very young children are never left on their own, irrespective of whether they seem peacefully asleep or are wide awake. Ms Westerman said: "Children under the age of 12 are rarely mature enough to cope in an emergency and should not be left at home alone for a long period." The organisation also cautions against leaving minors under the age of 16 unsupervised overnight and reminded caregivers to think about whether a child has any special requirements before making the decision to leave them on their own or in the care of an older sibling. Be informed if they're going out without adult supervision Knowing where your child plans to go, what they'll be doing, who they'll be with, and how far they'll be travelling is essential when they venture out without adult oversight. Having this information is key for parents to "make the right decision". Ensure they know important contact numbers Ensure your child has a reliable means of contacting a parent or guardian and identify a trustworthy nearby adult to turn to in an emergency if they are staying home alone. Ms Westerman advised: "If they're going out alone make sure they know a trusted adult's full name and address and have two trusted adults' phone numbers." Discuss various scenarios with your child Have an open conversation with your child about potential situations they may encounter and how to stay safe. Ask them how they would react and how they think they would feel. Ms Westerman added: "If they're going to be home alone, for example, ask them what they'd do if they hurt themselves or if a stranger knocks on the door. "If they're going out alone you might want to ask them what they'd do if someone asks them to do something they're not comfortable with." Set clear boundaries Make sure your child is fully aware of the rules when they're unsupervised, whether at home or out alone, so both you and they understand how they should behave in your absence. Ms Westerman said: "It's a good idea to agree on some house or outside rules that suit their maturity before you leave them alone. Tourists urged to avoid popular bar which 'charges customers 100 Euro for a beer'
Tourists have urged fellow holidaymakers to avoid a notorious bar in Greece that is 'charging €100' for a beer. DK Oyster claims it 'boasts an exceptional atmosphere with fantastic service, beautiful seaside view', however, its reviews say otherwise. But Brits have taken to Tripadvisor to warn against the business, which is located on the idyllic island of Mykonos. Just one week ago, a British man revealed how he was charged an eye-watering €100 (£84) for a lager, before bar staff attempted to haggle at the price. Detailing his experience, Nathan said: 'Asked for a seat in the sun and a drinks menu, he offered us 1 litre of lager for €100! 'Once we said no thanks he proceeded to drop the price but we didn't stick around, if you find yourself here, do yourself a favour and walk on to another bar as they don't try to rip you off and the atmosphere is much better. We ended up paying €7 [£6] each for a lager.' Another unhappy customer, named Sue, told how she and her group of friends were enticed in with the offer of free sunbeds, before ordering drinks without a menu. She explained: 'When we asked for the total, we were presented with a bill just under €400 [£337] for a handful of drinks. 'We were shocked to discover we were charged for more drinks than we had actually ordered, including the so-called 'free' one. Even soft drinks like Coca-Cola, we were told, were also €35 [£29] each.' TripAdvisor has even slapped a warning on the bar's official page, encouraging potential customers to carry out their own research first before visiting. It reads: 'Tripadvisor has been made aware of recent media reports or events concerning this property which may not be reflected in reviews found on this listing. 'Accordingly, you may wish to perform additional research for information about this property when making your travel plans.' A menu posted online shows the extreme pricing for beverages, with a glass of white wine Chardonnay costing €130 (£109). An Aperol will set you back €58 (£49), a Jack Daniel's €49 (£41), while a Pimm's is €58 (£49) by the glass. A receipt posted by one holidaymaker showed how they were charged a staggering €136 (£114) for two glasses of prosecco. The fresh complaints come after MailOnline visited the Mykonos restaurant last year and was hit with a fee of over €100 for a mouthful of crab, plus service. TripAdvisor has slapped a warning on the bar's official page, encouraging potential customers to carry out their own research first before visiting In response, however, the restaurant's owner Dimitrios Kalamaras insisted that his establishment had been 'unfairly traduced by a freeloader who wanted to eat for gratis and position herself as an influencer'. To determine which of these accounts was closer to the truth, MailOnline went undercover at the restaurant, posing as innocent holidaymakers who had wandered into the restaurant after spotting it by chance. Three years ago, following damaging publicity in the US media when two American tourists were charged €600 for two drinks and a portion of crab legs, the Greek government came down hard on the restaurant. The minister of tourism, Vassillis Kikilias instructed the Cyclades Regional Tourism Agency to investigate and they duly found several tax violations in the company's books, leading to a guilty plea and a fine of €31,000.
