BEFORE going to bed, I looked at the notes from my new artificial intelligence life coach and realised the day really hadn't been a good one.
My pocket-sized tutor berated me for not giving family more of my attention, judged the way I spoke to one of my work colleagues and chastised me for not taking time to connect with my partner.

Soon, the way you live your life could be analysed like this, too.
I was one of the first in the UK to try the Limitless Pendant.
It is a discreet AI gadget you clip to your clothes that records everything said by you — and those nearby.
On sale now in the UK for £150, the little black disc provides a full transcript of your day, as well as notes and tips on how you should have behaved.
Perfect if, like me, you have a shocking memory.
But also potentially disastrous if those around you don't know from the off they are being recorded and take umbrage — as mine did!
The 3cm disc, with an inbuilt microphone, is the brainchild of American Dan Siroker, who set up Limitless five years ago.
When he put the pendants up for sale last year, they were snapped up faster than he could have imagined.
In fact, 10,000 were bought in 24 hours — and the gizmos are being delivered around the world in the next few weeks.
A bit obsessed
Dan has said the gadget can improve human intelligence by using AI to overcome the brain's limitations, specifically with memory and focus.

He explained: 'It can help people live better, more productive, more self-aware lives.'
To be fair, some of its functions were quite useful.
After connecting it to an app on my phone, I could see every conversation I'd had — along with those words of advice.
When my two sons complained because they wanted to show me trainers online while I was busy making their tea, I ignored them.
The pendant later said: 'You could have tried to balance their excitement with your need to make dinner.'
And when my dad rang during office hours and I told him I had no time to talk, the pendant reminded me that family is important and I should 'fully engage' instead of concentrating so much on work.
It sounds like a great idea, in theory.
I became a bit obsessed with asking the suggested questions at the end of each day, such as, 'How could I have been more effective today at work?' or, 'How could I be more persuasive?'
But there are pitfalls.
At some points, it could not understand what I was saying and was convinced my son Harry was called Tory.
And there were times when I had zero idea what it was on about, and felt like it was nagging me.
But the biggest issue is privacy. I'd never wear it in the bedroom, and one night in the pub, I only remembered to tell my pals about it on our third round. They were raging.
Recording conversations without consent in the UK can lead to civil claims for damages and criminal prosecution.
The pendant does have a visible, white LED light.
So, according to the company, 'everyone you meet with understands that it is recording'. But as mine was clipped to my jeans, and my jumper was on top, that was impossible.
The company website suggests you broach the recording issue by saying something like: 'This conversation is important to me and I want to remember what you say without taking notes. Is it OK if I use this pendant to capture the conversation? I'm happy to share the transcript if you like.'
Clever but terrifying
Chief executive Dan reveals he does it, insisting: 'I haven't had a single person say to me, 'Oh, that's weird. Take that off'.
'It's not for everyone. Not everyone wants to be better in life. But if you do, this is magic.'
Then there's the matter of your privacy, as everything you say or do is captured.
The company says your recordings are encrypted, legally protected and safe from third-party AI providers.
Users can lock recordings on the app, and the company pledges never to access data without permission.
Dan says this is 'the future', adding: 'There will be millions, if not billions, of people on the planet wearing this, or one of our competitors' devices, in the years to come.'
While this could make me a better person, it also risks killing the art of conversation, as we all fear others might be recording us.
It could also get pricey. On the final day of my experiment, I lost the pendant.
I briefly panicked, before realising that all I had to do was check on the app when it last picked up my voice.
That was in the car. Clever — but slightly terrifying at the same time.
A week in, I felt a bit irritated by the pendant's feedback and could not wait to shove it back in its box.
With it on, it seemed like I was being spied on, which felt intrusive.
I admit it has its uses, though. And I really should call my dad.

It's perfect if you've got an iPhone, iPad or Mac computer lying around at home – just waiting for a free AI upgrade. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 13 Your Apple gadgets have some handy AI tricks that you might be missing out on Credit: Apple 13 You can create a fun emoji for your bedtime stories Credit: Sean Keach 13 Then you can generate an entire bedtime story based on your virtual character Credit: Sean Keach The Sun can reveal five clever tricks that work using Apple Intelligence, and they only take a few seconds each. The only note is that you'll need an Apple gadget that actually supports Apple Intelligence. That includes: iPhone 15 Pro iPhone 15 Pro Max iPhone 16 iPhone 16 Plus iPhone 16 Pro iPhone 16 Pro Max iPhone 16e iPad Pro (M1 and later) iPad Air (M1 and later) iPad mini (A17 Pro) MacBook Air/Pro (M1 and later) iMac/Mac Mini (M1 and later) Mac Studio (M1 Max and later) Mac Pro (M2 Ultra) Apple AI Trick #1 – BEDTIME STORIES Your iPhone can create bedtime stories for kids. It's a perfect parenting hack. Just go into Messages, bring up the keyboard, tap on Genmoji, then create a funny character. Maybe it's a squirrel with a shovel or an elephant in a chef's hat. This will be your character. Now go into Notes, tap on Writing Tools, then choose Compose with ChatGPT, and ask for a short story about your elephant chef – and say they're going on an adventure. It'll create the story, which you can then illustrate by dropping the Genmoji at the top. Or you could even go into Apple's Image Playground app and make a full picture, then paste that in instead. It's perfect for bedtime because you can have a different story every night. Apple interview with Greg Joz Joswiak on new artificial intelligence, screening, hold assist, carplay, liquid glass and ios updates Apple AI Trick #2 – HOLIDAY PLANNER Another easy trick is letting Apple's AI plan your holiday – or at least the itinerary. This one works on iPhone and iPad, but we tried it on Mac. Just double-click the Command button on your keyboard to bring up Siri. Then type in your request, like asking for a three-day hiking trip in the Cotswolds. 13 You can type to Siri and ask for help with holiday planning Credit: Sean Keach 13 Siri can use ChatGPT to generate a holiday itinerary in seconds Credit: Sean Keach You could even ask for a budget-friendly holiday with cheap activities to save money. Let Siri send your request to ChatGPT and it'll make a full itinerary that you can drop straight into a document. And you can even generate a fun AI pic to go with it too using Apple's Image Playground feature. Apple AI Trick #3 – SKETCH EXPERT I'm hopeless at drawing, but AI isn't. HOW DOES CHATGPT WORK ON IPHONE? Here's the official guidance from Apple... "Siri can tap into ChatGPT for certain requests, including questions about photos or documents," Apple explained. "And with Compose in Writing Tools, you can create and illustrate original content from scratch. "You control when ChatGPT is used and will be asked before any of your information is shared. Anyone can access ChatGPT for free, without creating an account. "ChatGPT subscribers can connect accounts to access paid features within these experiences." Picture Credit: Apple There's a clever trick that turns your own sketches into art – and it works using the Apple Pencil on an iPad. Draw something rough in the Notes app – we sketched a terrarium – and then write what it is next to it. Now go into the Apple Pencil menu, choose the AI button, and circle your creation. And in just a few seconds, it'll transform what you've drawn into a proper sketch. You can even swipe through several options to find the perfect one. 13 Even a very average sketch can be transformed using Apple's AI Credit: Sean Keach 13 You can convert your drawings into impressive pieces of art in the Notes app Credit: Sean Keach It's a nice way to illustrate your notes quickly. Another handy tip: if you draw a shape like a square, circle, or star, and leave the Apple Pencil tip pressed to the screen at the end, it'll neaten it up for you. So your rough circle will snap to become perfectly round in an instant. This also works with drawing arrows too. Apple AI Trick #4 – PHOTO CLEAN-UP Fourth is Clean Up, which is built into Apple's default Photos app on your iPhone. 13 You can use Clean Up to remove almost any object from a scene Credit: Sean Keach It's a handy way to scrub unwanted objects from your pics. Maybe you've snapped Big Ben but there's a tourist in the way, or someone has photobombed your perfect selfie. Just go into the photo, tap on the edit button, and then choose the Clean Up option. Then you can tap on, rub over, or circle the object that you want to delete. 13 If you spot something unwanted in your photo, just get rid of it virtually Credit: Sean Keach 13 Just circle, scrub or tap the object that you want to remove Credit: Sean Keach 13 Clean Up will delete the object in seconds – replacing it with background Credit: Sean Keach Give it a few seconds and it should vanish from view, replaced by what the AI thinks should've been in the spot. If it doesn't work perfectly on the first go, you can give it a few more passes with Clean Up to get it right. And you can always revert back to the original image at any time if you don't like the edited version. Apple AI Trick #5 – SHOPPING HACK Lastly, there's a handy trick called Visual Intelligence that's great for shopping. First, you'll want to load it up. One way is to go into Settings > Action Button and set it to activate from your Action Button. Or if you have an iPhone with a Camera Control button, you can just hold that down instead. Now snap a pic of an object. We tried it on a Labubu, which is a massively popular collectible toy. 13 You can scan almost anything using Visual Intelligence – and then see if Google can find it online Credit: Sean Keach 13 You can find the cheapest prices or lookalike alternatives for loads of products, including clothes and furniture Credit: Sean Keach But it also works just fine on clothes or furniture that you like too. The AI will identify what it's seeing, and then show you a load of places that you can buy it online. You can then find the best price for the exact item you're looking at. And it'll usually also surface similar-looking items if you snap clothes or furniture, so it's a clever way to find cheap 'dupes' of expensive items that you like.

China cautions tech firms over Nvidia H20 AI chip purchases, sources say

Aug 12 (Reuters) - Chinese authorities have summoned domestic companies including major internet firms Tencent ( opens new tab and ByteDance over their purchases of Nvidia's (NVDA.O), opens new tab H20 chips, asking them to explain their reasons and expressed concerns over information risks, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) and other agencies also held meetings with Baidu ( opens new tab and smaller Chinese tech firms in recent weeks, said one of the two people and a third source. The Chinese officials asked companies why they needed to buy Nvidia chips when they could purchase from domestic suppliers, the sources. Authorities also expressed concerns that materials Nvidia has asked companies to submit for U.S. government review could contain sensitive information including client data, one of the sources said. However, the people, who declined to be identified because the meetings were not public, said the companies have not been ordered to stop buying H20 chips. Nvidia said on Tuesday the H20 chip was "not a military product or for government infrastructure". "China has ample supply of domestic chips to meet its needs. It won't and never has relied on American chips for government operations, just like the U.S. government would not rely on chips from China," the statement said. Baidu, ByteDance, Tencent and the CAC did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Earlier on Tuesday, Bloomberg News reported that Chinese authorities have urged domestic companies to avoid using Nvidia's H20 chips, particularly for government-related purposes. Several companies were issued official notices discouraging the use of the H20, a less-advanced chip, mainly for any government or national security-related work by state enterprises or private companies, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. In a separate report, The Information reported that ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent had been ordered by the CAC in the past two weeks to suspend Nvidia chip purchases altogether, citing data security concerns. The CAC directive was communicated at a meeting the regulator held with over a dozen Chinese tech firms, shortly after the Trump administration reversed the export curbs on H20 chips, according to the Information report. Reuters could not immediately confirm the reports and Alibaba did not respond to a request for comment. Top contract chipmaker SMIC ( opens new tab rose 5% on Tuesday on expectations of rising demand for locally-produced chips. But even without an outright ban, the concerns expressed by Chinese authorities could threaten Nvidia's recently restored access to the Chinese market as Chinese companies look to keep in step with regulators. Nvidia designed the H20 specifically for China after U.S. export restrictions on its more advanced AI chips took effect in late 2023. The H20 had since been the most sophisticated AI chip Nvidia was allowed to sell in China. Earlier this year, U.S. authorities effectively banned its sale to China, but reversed the decision in July following an agreement between Nvidia and the Trump administration. Last month, China's cyberspace regulator summoned Nvidia representatives, asking the company to explain whether the H20 posed backdoor security risks that could affect Chinese user data and privacy. State-controlled media have intensified criticism of Nvidia in recent days. Yuyuan Tantian, affiliated with state broadcaster CCTV, published an article on WeChat over the weekend claiming H20 chips pose security risks and lack technological advancement and environmental friendliness. The scrutiny threatens a significant revenue stream for Nvidia, which generated $17 billion from China sales in its fiscal year ended January 26 - or 13% of total revenue. China has accelerated work on domestic AI chip alternatives, with companies, such as Huawei ( developing processors that rival the H20's performance, and Beijing urging the technology sector to become more self-sufficient. However, U.S. sanctions on advanced chipmaking equipment, including lithography machines essential for chip production, have constrained domestic manufacturers' ability to boost production. On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that he might allow Nvidia to sell a scaled-down version of its advanced Blackwell chip in China, despite deep-seated fears in Washington that Beijing could harness U.S. AI capabilities to supercharge its military. China's foreign ministry said on Tuesday it hoped the U.S. would act to maintain the stability and smooth operation of the global chip supply chain. The Trump administration last week confirmed an unprecedented deal with Nvidia and AMD (AMD.O), opens new tab, which agreed to give the U.S. government 15% of revenue from sales of some advanced chips in China. China's renewed guidance on avoiding chips also affects AI accelerators from AMD, Bloomberg also reported. It was not clear, however, whether any notices from Chinese authorities specifically mentioned AMD's MI308 chip. AMD did not respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours.
