The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has initiated the process to acquire nearly 3,500 acres in Wadsa taluka of Gadchiroli district for JSW Group's proposed steel plant.As per TOI, the development follows JSW Group chairman Sajjan Jindal's announcement in February to set up an integrated steel facility in the Maoism-affected district with an investment of ₹1 lakh crore.The plant is expected to have a production capacity of 25 million tonnes per year—doubling JSW's current capacity and surpassing the 18 million tonnes produced by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).A source familiar with the matter said this would be the largest land acquisition in the district. "The process has been initiated. A formal proposal is close to finalisation," the person said, adding that most of the land is privately owned with some forested patches.Once the proposal is approved by the state government, a notification will be issued, followed by local intimation and joint land measurement. No formal communication has yet been made to villagers.Since some of the affected villages fall under the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act (PESA), resolutions from gram sabhas may also be required, the source added.The state government has identified Gadchiroli as a potential steel hub. Other companies with planned investments in the district include Lloyds Metals and Energy, which recently received clearance to expand iron ore mining, and Surjagad Ispat, which has proposed a plant in southern Gadchiroli.

To make city slum-free, all slums to be surveyed by year-end
Mumbai: The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) is working on completing the survey of all slums in the city by the end of this year, with an eye on creating a reliable databank for future slum rehabilitation projects and curbing the emergence of new, illegal slum settlements. The survey, incorporating biometric details of slum residents and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, will help make Mumbai slum-free, said officials. (Hindustan Times) 'We have set a target of completing the survey of all slums in Mumbai by December 31,' said Dr Mahendra Kalyankar, chief executive officer, SRA. The authority will rope in specialised agencies over and above two agencies it currently relies on to complete the work on time, he added. The decision to finish the survey this year was taken during a review meeting chaired by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on June 12, wherein he directed officials to accelerate the exercise. The SRA had, via a drone survey in 2021, identified 2,597 slum clusters across Mumbai, which were differentiated into 13,79,086 slum settlements. Till Thursday, Pioneer Foundation Private Limited and Saar IT Resources Private Limited – two agencies which conduct surveys on behalf of the SRA – had conducted door-to-door surveys in 5,75,136 slum settlements while another 8,03,950 slum settlements remained to be surveyed. 'Since over 8 lakh slums have to be surveyed in about five months, we will appoint more agencies by floating a tender,' said an SRA official. Around 1.4 lakh of the settlements that remain to be surveyed are located on plots owned by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and both agencies are conducting separate surveys as well, the official mentioned. 'Once completed, our survey will provide comprehensive information about all slums in the city and prevent any new addition,' the SRA official told HT. Slums that spring up after the survey can be identified easily, which will help in initiating punitive action, he said. 'It will also prevent any attempt by developers to add fake tenants in SRA projects,' he added. According to the Maharashtra Slum Areas (Improvement Clearance and Redevelopment) Act, 1971, residents of slums built until January 1, 2000 must be provided free rehabilitation tenements when they are evicted. In May 2018, during Devendra Fadnavis' first term as chief minister, the cut-off date for rehabilitation was extended to January 1, 2011, but it was mandated that those residing in slums built between 2001 and 2011 would not be eligible for free rehabilitation, following a Supreme Court decision.

HC upholds gratuity benefits for contract workers at Air India facility
Hyderabad: In a significant victory for contract workers, the Telangana high court has upheld the orders directing Air India to pay gratuity benefits to 13 workers engaged through a contractor at its central training establishment in Ferozguda, Secunderabad. A division bench comprising Justices Challa Kodanda Ram and Nagesh Bheemapaka dismissed a batch of writ petitions filed by Air India challenging the rulings of the Controlling Authority and the Appellate Authority under the Payment of Gratuity Act . Both authorities had held Air India liable as a 'model employer' for the workers engaged in its facility. Air India contended that the workers were employed under a works contract through a third-party firm—MKR Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Works—and not through a manpower supply arrangement, and hence were not eligible for gratuity benefits. The airline sought to quash the 2018 orders of the Appellate Authority. Rejecting this contention, the high court emphasised that Air India, as a public sector undertaking, is expected to uphold constitutional values, including the dignity of labour. The court held that gratuity, being a social welfare benefit, should not be denied on technical grounds, particularly when the workers had rendered long and continuous service at the establishment. Accordingly, the court upheld the authorities' findings and dismissed Air India's petitions, directing the airline to pay the gratuity dues to the 13 contract workers.

Kerala told to start land acquisition with its 50% project cost: Vaishnaw on Sabarimala rail project
Land acquisition for the long-pending Angamali-Sabarimala Railway line, also called Sabari Rail project, is likely to begin soon as recent discussions between Kerala government and Railways Ministry indicate a renewed push to implement the project. In a written reply to questions from Congress's Jebi Mather Hisham in RS Friday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that in a recent meeting with CM Pinarayi Vijayan, the state government has been requested to begin land acquisition by using its share of 50% of the project cost. Vaishnaw said that once land acquisition by the state starts, work can proceed further. The 111-km Angamali-Sabarimala railway line project via Erumeli was sanctioned in 1997-98. It is among the crucial railway projects in Kerala, which is expected to cater to the pilgrims visiting Sabrimala temple. Erumeli is the gateway to the famous hill temple. However, only the work on Angamali-Kaladi (7 km) line and long lead works on Kaladi-Perumbavoor (10 km) were taken up so far. Vaishnaw said that further works could not be taken up due to protests against land acquisition and fixing of alignment of the line, court cases against the project and inadequate support from the state government. The project's estimated cost has been revised to `3,801 crore by Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL) and submitted to Kerala government in December, 2023. In August 2024, the Kerala government gave its conditional consent to the estimate. Later, the Railways Ministry asked the state government to give unconditional consent for sharing the cost. The ministry also asked the Kerala government to enter into a tripartite MoU among the state government, Ministry of Railways and RBI for the project. 'However, in a memorandum submitted by Kerala government to the Railway Minister on June 3, 2025, it has been intimated that the Kerala government does not agree to enter into tripartite agreement,' Vaishnaw said. An MoU was inked between the state and the Railways Ministry in January 2016 but work could not be started due to ambiguity over financing and sharing of total cost.
