Prudence Sekgodiso on the podium again at Eugene Diamond League
Sekgodiso pushed eventual winner Tsige Duguma of Ethiopia all the way to the line, equalling her personal best of 1:57.16 to take the runner-up spot. Duguma narrowly held on to secure victory in 1:57.10, six seconds ahead. African athletes swept the podium as Halimah Nakaayi of Uganda held on to finish third in 1:57.89.
It was Sekgodiso's third podium finish thus far in the 2025 Diamond League series, having taken second place in Rabat and third in Stockholm.
Bayanda Walaza, the only other South African athlete competing in Eugene, took sixth position in the men's 100m race on his Diamond League debut. The 19-year-old sprinter clocked 10.04 seconds in a fast race that saw four men dipping under 10 seconds.

Why Kaizer Chiefs fans should be excited about the arrival of Asenele Velebayi
Got their man Asenele Veebayi has recently completed his move from Cape Town Spurs to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs. Photo: Kaizer Chiefs on X Image: Kaizer Chiefs on X After one of the longest transfer sagas in the history of South African football, Kaizer Chiefs have finally got their man and confirmed the signing of Asenele Velebayi. While Cape Town Spurs will continue to fight, Velebayi joins Chiefs on a free transfer after the Western Cape side were relegated from the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the end of last season. His arrival also comes at a time when Chiefs are entering a second season under Nasreddine Nabi, a coach who demands energy, bravery, and creativity in the final third. Nabi's sides play with purpose and attacking intent, constantly looking to stretch defences and create overloads in dangerous areas. That philosophy aligns perfectly with Velebayi's natural game – a willingness to take risks, drive at opponents, and create opportunities out of nothing. Next Stay Close ✕ Chiefs Welcome Velebayi to Naturena We would like to announce the signing of Asanele Velebayi. The Cape Town-born winger has signed a long-term contract with the Club. Welcome to the Kaizer Chiefs family!#WelcomeVelabayi #Amakhosi4Life — Kaizer Chiefs (@KaizerChiefs) August 12, 2025 So, what can the 22-year-old from Philipi in Cape Town offer the Soweto giants? First of all, despite his young age, he is mature, and has been playing professionally for five seasons. He is also comfortable in multiple attacking roles – primarily a right winger, but equally effective on the left or in an advanced midfield role. Chiefs have been desperate for attacking spark, and Velebayi brings exactly that – a creative, unpredictable presence who can beat defenders, excite the crowd, and unlock stubborn backlines. His speed, and ability to take on defenders will also come in handy. Over the last couple of seasons, Chiefs have not had unpredictable players who can wow the crowd and leave defenders flat-footed. Another area where Velebayi thrives is his productivity during games. He is able to put the ball on a plate for strikers to score, something the club have been struggling with of late. And, because he was entrusted with the captain's armband by his former club, he is also a good leader on the pitch. This is a signing that Amakhosi's scouting department got right for once. If he hits the ground running, Velebayi could become a game-changing force on the wing, leaving defenders scrambling and transforming Chiefs' frontline under Nabi's fearless, attack-minded approach – finally giving the Amakhosi faithful the unpredictability they've been craving. WP to wear black armbands in honour of Dawie Snyman
The Western Cape rugby community is in mourning following the death of Dawie Snyman, one of Western Province's most iconic rugby figures. A former Springbok utility back and highly decorated coach, Snyman passed away at the age of 76 after a short battle with leukemia. Snyman's legacy in South African rugby is deeply woven into the fabric of Western Province's golden era. As head coach, he steered the team to a record five consecutive Currie Cup titles from 1982 to 1986 – a feat that remains unmatched in WP history. Before donning the famous blue and white hoops, Snyman made his Springbok debut in 1972. Equally adept at flyhalf and fullback, his tactical nous and leadership laid the foundation for his later success on the sidelines. Snyman's influence extended beyond the pitch. He mentored generations of rugby talent and played a pivotal role in shaping the identity of Western Province Rugby during a transformative era for the sport in South Africa. 'He will go down as one of the true legends of Western Province,' a statement from the union said. In honour of Snyman's legacy, the Western Province team will wear black armbands during their Currie Cup clash against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday, 16 August. Snyman's rugby pedigree runs deep. His brother, Jackie Snyman, also represented the Springboks during the 1970s. Jackie's son, Dawie Snyman jnr, currently serves as an assistant coach for the Stormers, continuing the family's contribution to South African rugby. As tributes continue to pour in, Snyman is remembered not only for his accomplishments but for his humility, sharp rugby mind, and enduring influence on South African rugby. Unstoppable style: Giovanna Barbosa transforms football discipline into fashion power
From Coventry City FC's pitches to the global fashion scene, Giovanna Barbosa blends athletic discipline, legal smarts and creative flair into a boundary-breaking career. From the disciplined pitches of Coventry City FC to the high-gloss world of international fashion, Barbosa has fused athletic precision, legal acumen and creative daring into a career that defies convention. South African-born Giovanna Barbosa doesn't just break moulds - she reinvents them. As the visionary behind the bold 'Miss Unforgettable' campaign, she's proving that presence, authenticity and fearless storytelling aren't just qualities for the runway - they're a way of life. Barbosa is an international fashion model and creative director, celebrated for merging high-concept visuals with emotional storytelling. Her editorial work challenges traditional norms of beauty and femininity, crafting campaigns that prioritise authenticity, power and aesthetic depth. Yet, her journey to the creative spotlight was far from linear. Before fashion became her stage, Barbosa was a professional footballer for Coventry City FC. 'Football taught me discipline, resilience and the value of teamwork - qualities that are invaluable in modelling and creative work,' she explained. 'It also taught me to perform under pressure, to read situations quickly and to adapt. On a shoot or when directing a campaign, every second counts - just like on the field.' Transitioning from football to fashion and creative direction stemmed from a lifelong affinity for aesthetics. 'Even as a child, I was drawn to self-expression,' Barbosa said. 'After football, I wanted a career that allowed me to combine creativity, storytelling and impact. Modelling and creative direction gave me the freedom to explore those passions while challenging myself in entirely new ways.' Her academic background in law also informs her creative process. 'Studying law sharpened my analytical skills and attention to detail,' she noted. 'From contracts to project execution, I learned how to balance creative vision with practical implementation. Creativity without structure doesn't last.'
