Prudence Sekgodiso on the podium again at Eugene Diamond League
Sekgodiso pushed eventual winner Tsige Duguma of Ethiopia all the way to the line, equalling her personal best of 1:57.16 to take the runner-up spot. Duguma narrowly held on to secure victory in 1:57.10, six seconds ahead. African athletes swept the podium as Halimah Nakaayi of Uganda held on to finish third in 1:57.89.
It was Sekgodiso's third podium finish thus far in the 2025 Diamond League series, having taken second place in Rabat and third in Stockholm.
Bayanda Walaza, the only other South African athlete competing in Eugene, took sixth position in the men's 100m race on his Diamond League debut. The 19-year-old sprinter clocked 10.04 seconds in a fast race that saw four men dipping under 10 seconds.

First of all, despite his young age, he is mature, and has been playing professionally for five seasons. He is also comfortable in multiple attacking roles – primarily a right winger, but equally effective on the left or in an advanced midfield role. Chiefs have been desperate for attacking spark, and Velebayi brings exactly that – a creative, unpredictable presence who can beat defenders, excite the crowd, and unlock stubborn backlines. His speed, and ability to take on defenders will also come in handy. Over the last couple of seasons, Chiefs have not had unpredictable players who can wow the crowd and leave defenders flat-footed. Another area where Velebayi thrives is his productivity during games. He is able to put the ball on a plate for strikers to score, something the club have been struggling with of late. And, because he was entrusted with the captain's armband by his former club, he is also a good leader on the pitch. This is a signing that Amakhosi's scouting department got right for once. WP to wear black armbands in honour of Dawie Snyman
The Western Cape rugby community is in mourning following the death of Dawie Snyman, one of Western Province's most iconic rugby figures. A former Springbok utility back and highly decorated coach, Snyman passed away at the age of 76 after a short battle with leukemia. Snyman's legacy in South African rugby is deeply woven into the fabric of Western Province's golden era. As head coach, he steered the team to a record five consecutive Currie Cup titles from 1982 to 1986 – a feat that remains unmatched in WP history. Before donning the famous blue and white hoops, Snyman made his Springbok debut in 1972. Equally adept at flyhalf and fullback, his tactical nous and leadership laid the foundation for his later success on the sidelines. Snyman's influence extended beyond the pitch. He mentored generations of rugby talent and played a pivotal role in shaping the identity of Western Province Rugby during a transformative era for the sport in South Africa. 'He will go down as one of the true legends of Western Province,' a statement from the union said. In honour of Snyman's legacy, the Western Province team will wear black armbands during their Currie Cup clash against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday, 16 August.
