Microsoft shuts Pakistan office after 25 years amid global overhaul
Microsoft, while closing its office in Pakistan on Thursday after 25 years, cited global restructuring and a shift to a cloud-based, partner-led model.
The move came as the tech giant cut roughly 9,100 jobs worldwide (or about 4 per cent of its workforce) in its largest layoff round since 2023.
Jawwad Rehman, former founding Country Manager of Microsoft Pakistan, urged the government and IT minister to engage with the tech giants with a bold KPI (Key Performance Indicators) driven plan.
He said the exit reflected the current business climate. Even global giants like Microsoft find it unsustainable to stay, he posted on LinkedIn.
Former Pakistan president Arif Alvi, in a post on X, also expressed concern over Microsoft shutting down operations.
It is a troubling sign for our economic future, he wrote.
He claimed Microsoft once considered Pakistan for expansion, but that instability led the company to choose Vietnam instead by late 2022.
The opportunity was lost, he wrote.
Jawwad explained that Microsoft didn't operate a full commercial base in Pakistan, relying instead on liaison offices focused on enterprise, education, and government clients.
Over recent years, much of that work had already shifted to local partners, while licensing and contracts were managed from its European hub in Ireland.

The exact number of affected Xbox employees remains undisclosed. Reports indicate that over 70 staff members at Turn 10 Studios, the developer behind Forza Motorsport, will be let go, affecting the "vast majority" of the studio's personnel. Major game projects face setbacks The impact on Xbox's game development ecosystem is severe, with multiple studios and projects reportedly hit: Rare and Everwild: British developer Rare has seen its highly anticipated game, Everwild, canceled, as per Gamespot. AP pilots Denmark tech for durable roads
Kurnool: Several roads in Andhra Pradesh are going to get new look and pothole-free as the state government started using Danish Asphalt Reinforcing technology of Denmark as per the directions of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to give priority for roads network. As part of the initiative, minister for roads and buildings B C Janardhana Reddy launched the pilot project of Danish Asphalt reinforcing technology for a road from Mudigedu to Sanjamala in Banaganapalle constituency in Nandyal district. The minister said that the new technology is being used for noted projects world-wide, including airports, metro and motorways. He said that the new technology will help in ensuring long life of roads and able to bear heavy loads without sinking and potholes. He said if the pilot project is successful, the same technology will be used throughout the state. The minister said this innovative approach, combining bitumen with aramid and polyolefin fibers, ensures roads that are 50 per cent more durable and resistant to potholes and floods. R&B ENC Ramachandra said that the road project was taken as a pilot project by Danish Fiber company of Denmark as a trial run and if it is successful, it will be used throughout the state. Danish firm's representative Jose Sebastian expressed delight over partnering with the Andhra Pradesh government, noting the technology's proven effectiveness in European infrastructure projects, including Heathrow Airport and the Dubai Metro. Other dignitaries present included NDB CEO M V R Vivekananda Reddy, R&B SE Maheshwar Reddy, EE Sridhar Reddy, DE Subbaraidu, and Danish team members Michael, David, and Jose Sebastian.
