Matheus Cunha transfer 'rows' at Man Utd jeopardise club's summer negotiations
All signs suggest Matheus Cunha is set to join Manchester United this summer, but there have been some hiccups in negotiations threatening to unravel the transfer
Alan Shearer has expressed worries about the "rows" between Manchester United and Wolves concerning Matheus Cunha's potential transfer to Old Trafford. It's been indicated for some time that the Brazil international will be joining United, but recent hiccups have emerged that could jeopardise the move.
Talks accelerated this week after United triggered the £62.5million release clause in Cunha's contract. However, Sky Sports reported Vitor Pereira's team had rejected the Red Devils' offer to split the payment across five instalments.
Ruben Amorim has been braced to enter his first summer transfer window at the United helm with limited resources. And funding is sure to suffer further after their defeat against Tottenham in the Europa League final, leaving the club with no European football next season.
United now need to sell certain players before they can afford to spend any significant sums. And Newcastle legend Shearer raised doubts regarding United's prospects of securing Cunha amid recent developments.
"Who they sell, I don't know. If they need to raise funds then they have a couple of options to do that," he told Betfair. "It looks as if the Cunha deal is going to happen albeit I saw that there's rows in terms of how payments will be made."
The transfer saga seems to have taken a positive turn after United agreed to shell out the £62.5m fee in three payments spread over two years. Cunha is now poised to have his medical at Carrington, potentially marking United's most significant acquisition of 2025.
The former RB Leipzig and Atletico Madrid attacker has an impressive record of 33 goals in 92 games for Wolves and offers much-needed versatility up top. Meanwhile, Shearer has cautioned that there's still a hefty amount of squad rebuilding necessary before United can dream of fighting for a top-six finish again.
He continued: "Man United need an overhaul but it won't happen in one or two transfer windows and that's why, as a player, you have to think long and hard about needing or wanting to go there because it's going to take two or three years to get anywhere near the levels to challenge for the top six again.
"If funds are going to be tight due to PSR then their assets in [Alejandro] Garnacho and [Bruno] Fernandes may have to be sold to bring funds in. Nothing surprises me with Man United on or off the field anymore because they've been an embarrassment over the last 12 months."
Cunha himself has dropped a big hint he's preparing to leave after seemingly bidding farewell to his Wolves supporters. The club's official Instagram account featured a clip of the Molineux faithful serenading the star following their last game of the campaign, and Cunha's response seemed to indicate plans for departure.
"I can't thank you enough for so much," he wrote in the comments section. And many have interpreted his words as an indication his tenure in the midlands is nearing its conclusion.
Garnacho, 20, has been placed on the transfer list following a fallout with Amorim, who excluded him from the squad that beat Aston Villa on the final day of the season. There's talk United are aiming to bag up to £70m for the youngster, although their negotiating stance seems frail.
United will undoubtedly be keener to cling on to captain Fernandes, who was previously rumoured to be on the radars of Barcelona and Real Madrid. Meanwhile, a move to Saudi Arabia now appears to be the most probable outcome if he were to depart.

Liam Delap's huge Chelsea contract details as forward agrees terms on transfer
Chelsea are finalising the signing of Ipswich striker Liam Delap, who's set to snub interest from Manchester United in order to join Enzo Maresca's side for £30million Chelsea have agreed personal terms with Liam Delap on a six-year contract after beating Manchester United to his signature. Delap, 22, was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford but he's chosen to join Chelsea, where he'll work with former coach Enzo Maresca. The Ipswich striker played under Maresca during his time in Manchester City's academy and the Blues boss has used his personal touch to help get the £30million deal over the line. Chelsea's qualification for the Champions League also had an impact, with United having missed out on European football altogether. Delap will undergo a medical on Monday before signing a deal which runs until June 2031, the Athletic report. It's a relatively usual contract length for a 22-year-old compared to the ones handed out throughout Todd Boehly's cash-happy regime. Enzo Fernandez penned an eight-and-a-half-year contract when he signed for Chelsea, as did Mykhailo Mudryk. The Blues implemented this structure in order to write off the cost of a player over a longer period (the length of their contract). Delap won't break records at Chelsea, with his £30m release clause becoming active after Ipswich were relegated from the Premier League. Maresca is a big fan of the England youth international, who's set to play at the under-21 European Championship this month, and wants him to challenge Nicolas Jackson for a starting place at Stamford Bridge next season. "To compare Liam with Harry Kane and Erling Haaland, I think it's a bit early," the Chelsea manager said in April. "But for sure, in terms of style he's that kind of player. They are all real nines. They are No. 9s inside the box. "But we also have a good No. 9 [in Jackson]. He's doing well since we started. Unfortunately, we've missed him, and sometimes you need to miss players to realise how important they are for you. "With Nico, we are a completely different team compared to when he was injured. We are happy with Nico as our striker." Will Liam Delap be a success at Chelsea? Give us your prediction in the comments section. Maresca did, however, praise Jackson, who missed a chunk of the season through injury before making his return in the spring. "My perfect No.9 is exactly Nico Jackson," he added. "We already have a No. 9. It's not summer now. "If we can have a copy of Nico, it's okay. I have said many times, and you can see as well, with Nico we are a better team. Nico is the one we need. "Last season, he scored goals without penalties. This season he scored goals until he was injured. Now, hopefully he can score more goals without penalties."

King issues Rangers word of caution amid 'domiant force' vow
However, King also wiped out any hopes of a wild spending spree upon arrival at the club as he insisted progress will be made in a "disciplined, stable manner". The former chairman remains convinced that the new majority owners are the right people to drive the club forward but urged a word of caution to supporters expecting a canter to the league title or guaranteed European qualification in the first year. Read more: 'I think I've said it before, and I'm going to say it again just so there's absolute clarity,' King said to The Rangers Review. 'I would not be introducing Andrew and the 49ers if I did not believe they were the right people to take the club forward. I would regard that as a failure by me in terms of my judgment as well. I really do believe they are the right people to take the club forward. 'Where I would caution is, they're going to do it in a disciplined, stable manner. So, if the supporters have got a sense that all of a sudden they're going to come in and spend vast amounts of money and you're going to have a team that runs away with the league next year and qualifies for Europe, then I think that's over-ambitious. 'I think what we should start seeing is a coherent plan. I think you should expect to see better communication with supporters, where people are aware of what the plan is, what's happening. It won't be like a black hole from an information point of view. 'And they are coming in with a commitment not to win a league title, but to make Rangers the dominant force in Scotland. That is what this project is about. It's not about winning one or two titles. It's about the next ten, 20 years and I think that's why I'm excited about it, because I think they are the right people.'

King issues Rangers word of caution amid 'domiant force' vow
The former chairman and majority shareholder - who sold his stake to Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises consortium last week - is confident Rangers will be run with a "coherent plan" as he backed the new board to find success in Glasgow.
