Classy field at Tambalang tracks

The field of eight starters all have declared ambitions to finish first amongst equals. The magnificent Ratu First is in fabulous form this season and must be closely watched. Vastly experienced Water Princess is a proper runner that can throttle hard in the last furlong. Beautiful Princess, always prepared well by RX Stable, has a decent chance of topping this race. Do not disregard Dedek Beauty, a quality and hardworking-type, who will start the race at gate 2 advantage. Race 4 (Novice) over 1100m sandtrack has four runners fighting for first position. The smart Mamboo enters this race as favourite. Finishing a close second on 6 April, he can go one better. Honey Prize is well-tuned and always try her best. The consistent Ria Novilla is proven quality and can put up a title challenge as well. Last but not least, Delilah is expected to excel at this level. Today (Saturday), Royal Sabah Turf Club's Sabah Star and Kinabalu Light are expected to improve from their previous outings at Selangor Turf Club. Scheduled at Race 4 (Class 4B) over 1020m, Sabah Star is competitive at this level and has a place chance. In Race 11 (Class 5A) over 1600m, Kinabalu Light can compete for first place but he has to overcome a strong field of Run Buddy Run as favourite, Flying Warrior and Dragon Whisperer. Saturday also includes two exciting Group 2 races from Australia's Eagle Farm track. Race 7 (Group 2) over 1600m features Australia's brightest three-year olds competing for a total prize money of A$350,000. Shangri La Spring is early favourite with Wonder Boy, Boomtown Boss, Our Benefactor going all in. Race 8 (Group 2) over 1200m sees Coleman going head on with a freshened Golden Mile. New Zealand bred Jedibeel will have a crack at these two favourites. Look out for Hidden Wealth with an excellent record of four wins in his last six outings. The local totalisator pools for Australian races are commingled into larger Australian pools which is well-received by local race-goers. Race goers can visit the Tambalang Racecourse, RSTC's off-course centres in Tanjung Aru or Keningau to watch 'live' Australian (Eagle Farm and Hawkesbury) & Selangor races this Saturday, and local, Hong Kong & Selangor races on Sunday. Penang striker Dylan rocks Hang Jebat Stadium with a brace
PETALING JAYA: Dylan Wenzel-Halls stole the show at the Hang Jebat Stadium as the Australian striker struck twice to fire Penang to a 2-0 victory over Melaka in their FA Cup round-of-16 first-leg clash on Sunday (Aug 17). The 27-year-old thought he had broken the deadlock in the first half with a superb curling effort from Bosnian winger Danilo Sipovac's pass. But after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, the goal was chalked off as Sipovac was judged to have fouled Melaka midfielder Nizaruddin Jazi in the build-up. Wenzel-Halls' frustration boiled over, and he was shown a yellow card by referee Nawal Mohd Zubir for his protests. But there was no denying him after the break. Just three minutes into the second half, he calmly slotted home from Ivorian striker Tchetche Kipre's pass to give Penang the lead. His celebration was filled with emotion as he made the VAR gesture before embracing fans in the stands. He doubled his tally in the 69th minute, latching onto a clever through ball from Wan Zack Haikal Wan Noor and firing a low shot that slipped past Melaka goalkeeper Jun Badelic. Penang will now take a healthy advantage into the second leg, with Wenzel-Halls' brace proving the difference on the night. Earlier, Sabah hammered Bunga Raya 6-0 while Immigration stunned Terengganu 2-1 in other round-of-16 fixtures.

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuching City coach Aidil Sharin Sahak said he would lose money if he spoke his mind about the referee in their match today. Aidil admttied he had much to say about the match officiating after his team lost 3-2 to Brunei's DPMM at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in the FA Cup round of 16 first leg. In another match, newcomers Immigration FC had everyone talking about them following their shock 2-1 win over last year's FA Cup semi-finalists, Terengganu. As for the action in Brunei, much of the post-match chatter centred not on the goals, but on the referee's calls. Aidil said there were moments he wanted to speak his mind about the referee, but he decided not to. "If I comment, my pocket will be gone (coaches get fined for criticising referees) to the MFL," he said. "So why waste my money? But of course, things have to improve because the league is getting more professional. "For me, after I looked at a photo from my media, it's very clear… but in the end, it's over, we have to move on." DPMM captain Azwan Ali Rahman opened the scoring in the fourth minute, before Wanja Ronaldo Ngah levelled for Kuching just before the break. Kuching's James Okwuosa fired the visitors ahead seconds into the second half, but Miguel Oliveira struck back quickly for DPMM. Substitute Jordan Murray's 79th-minute goal gave the hosts the lead. Kuching had a chance to eqaulise in the dying minutes when the referee awarded a penalty. But Gabriel Nistelrooy Tamin's shot was saved by Kristijan Naumovski. DPMM coach Jamie McAllister said: "The boys showed great character and spirit. We're new to the league, still adapting, but we battled, and that's what fans want to see." At the Batu Kawan Stadium, newly promoted Immigration left favourites Terengganu red faced. Though the Turtles took the lead in the 50th minute through Yann Mabella, Immigration equalised four minutes later via Rafael Holstein. Brazilian Joao Pedro then struck the winner in stoppage time to seal a remarkable win for Immigration. At the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium, Sabah crushed A1 Semi-Pro League team Bunga Raya 6-0. On target for Sabah were former national striker Darren Lok (10th minute. 47th, 53rd penalty), Fergus Tierney (18th), Jafri Chew (45+1 penalty) and Ajdin Mujagic (80th minute penalty). At the Hang Jebat Stadium, Australian Dylan Wenzel-Halls emerged as Penang's hero in their 2-0 win over Melaka FC, scoring in the 48th and 83rd minutes.

‘No 2026 Grand Slam Track till athletes paid'

PARIS: The financially troubled Grand Slam Track circuit will not take place in 2026 until athletes awaiting prize money for this year are paid, its founder Michael Johnson said on Friday. Johnson admitted in a statement 'we are struggling with our ability to compensate' athletes from the three meetings that took place in 2025 in Kingston, Jamaica, Miami and Philadelphia. The four-time Olympic sprint gold medallist said he had taken the decision to cancel the fourth and final meeting in Los Angeles 'to avoid further losses and start the lengthy process of stabilising the company to get back on track. 'But unfortunately, we saw circumstances change in ways beyond our control,' he said. He added: 'The 2026 season will not happen until those obligations are met—and that is my #1 priority.' Johnson said he had held talks with new investors and he remained 'confident' about the future of Grand Slam. 'We're not done yet. Not even close,' he said. Johnson launched Grand Slam as an alternative to the Diamond League series of international meetings with an important difference—it would only feature track events and no field events. He promised a more concentrated format with more head-to-head races between the world's best athletes. However, while the series was able to recruit stars such as US Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas and 400m hurdles world record holder and double Olympic gold medallist Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, it failed to recruit a host of top sprinting talent including the reigning men's and women's 100m champions Noah Lyles and Julien Alfred. The series offered athletes prize money of up to $100,000 for their overall standings after participating in two races at each meet. Athletes were pictured holding up giant cheques showing how much money they had won. However, while the competitors expressed enthusiasm for the series, there were clear signs it had failed to capture the imagination of fans.
