Two arrested in connection with failed bomb plot at Lady Gaga's mega-concert in Rio de Janeiro

Brazilian police said Sunday they arrested two people in connection with a foiled plot to bomb Lady Gaga's packed mega-concert in Rio de Janeiro.
Rio's civil police force said that together with the ministry of justice it "prevented a bomb attack that would have occurred at Lady Gaga's concert in Copacabana" on Saturday night.
Officials said the superstar's huge free gig on the beach, her first concert in Brazil since 2012, drew up to two million people.
Writing on X, Rio police said it had arrested an adult who was "responsible for the plot" as well as a teenager in the operation codenamed "Fake Monster" -- a reference to the US pop diva's pet name for her fans, "Little Monsters."
It said they had recruited people online to "carry out attacks using improvised explosives" and Molotov cocktails as "a collective challenge" with the aim of "gaining notoriety on social media."
The police added that the group behind the alleged plot "spread hate speech" and promoted radicalization and self-harm online.
Police carried out raids across Rio de Janeiro state as well as in the states of Sao Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, and Mato Grosso.
"The police acted silently and without creating panic... We acted surgically to prevent the crime from happening," Felipe Curi from Rio De Janeiro's Civil Police said in a statement.

'Scared sick'
Lady Gaga's concert was the second million-strong show on Copacabana beach in a year after a huge concert last year by Madonna.
Security was tight, with some 5,000 officers, drones and both surveillance and facial recognition cameras deployed.
The 39-year-old star's fans reacted with shock to the news of the foiled plot.
"THANK GOD. This would have had an impact on over 2 million people," posted the LadyGagaFansTogether Instagram account, which has 307,000 followers.
Writing on the same account one fan said he was "scared sick about her (Gaga) being safe at all times."
Lady Gaga on Sunday thanked her fans in Brazil on social media for "the biggest crowd for any woman in history."
"Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you," she posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night's show—the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil. The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I… pic.twitter.com/KCXvMxakZx — Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) May 4, 2025

Emtee responds to leaked messages with public apology to 'Big Brother' star Mshini Lekwadu
Emtee publicly addresses the controversy surrounding leaked messages with former Big Brother Mzansi contestant Mshini Lekwadu. Image: Instagram Emtee has addressed the controversy surrounding leaked private messages between himself and former 'Big Brother Mzansi: Umlilo' contestant Sphesihle 'Mshini' Lekwadu, taking to Instagram to issue a public apology. In two screenshots from his notes app, posted on Tuesday with the caption 'I am sorry', Emtee shared a lengthy statement in which he exempted himself from the way the messages surfaced online. He said he does not know Mshini personally, but, like many viewers, watched her on 'Big Brother' and noticed how she supported his work. According to Emtee, it is rare for him to see such genuine support because he is often unsure of where he stands with people. He admitted he is 'not perfect' but stressed that his intentions were to meet her in person to thank her and possibly collaborate, given her public profile and work ethic. Video Player is loading. The award-winning rapper also apologised directly to Lekwadu, her team and her loved ones, saying he would never deliberately reveal their private conversations or jeopardise her safety. 'I would never intentionally expose our conversations and put her safety at risk as I prioritise safety as well,' he said. Emtee further insisted that he was not responsible for making the screenshots public, adding in capital letters, 'I DID NOT POST THE CONVERSATIONS.' This comes after his wife, Nicole Kendall Chinsamy, shared screenshots of his private chats with multiple women, including Lekwadu, sparking cheating allegations. This led to Lekwadu issuing a statement to clarify the private conversation she had with the rapper. Both Emtee and the reality star have since maintained that their exchanges were nothing more than professional.

Art heist: R1 million worth of sculptures stolen from Pringle Bay gallery
One of the pieces stolen at the Fomo Fine Art Centre sculptured by by Anton Smit Image: Supplied A brazen overnight theft at the FOMO Fine Art Gallery in Pringle Bay has stripped the space of seven sculptures worth more than R1million and left an even greater sentimental wound. The stolen works, by celebrated South African artists Anton Smit and Janko de Beer, are not only of significant financial value but also irreplaceable cultural treasures. 'The theft took place during the night of Tuesday 5 August or the early hours of Wednesday 6 August. I was at the gallery until early Tuesday evening and returned at around 09:00 on Wednesday morning, when I immediately noticed that several sculptures were missing and one of our security cameras had been broken,' said de Beer, co-owner of the gallery and a celebrated visual artist and sculptor. 'Later, we also discovered that the camera positioned at the entrance to Pringle Bay, at the main intersection, was not functioning. We cannot confirm whether this was damaged during the incident or was already out of order. 'This does not appear to have been an opportunistic crime. The sculptures are large and somewhat heavy, so the thieves would have needed a suitable vehicle, the right equipment, and enough people to move them. All indications suggest it was a planned and targeted theft.' According to de Beer, seven sculptures were taken in total: six by Anton Smit and one by Janko de Beer, with a combined value of just over R1 million. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The Janko de Beer Sculpture was also stolen Image: Supplied However, the emotional and cultural loss is far greater. These works are unique and instantly recognisable to those familiar with South African sculpture, making them difficult to sell openly without raising suspicion. 'This theft is not only a personal blow to the gallery and the artists involved but also to the broader South African art community.' Despite damaged security equipment and no confirmed leads, police have been actively investigating de Beer. Three of these Anton Smit sculptures were stolen Image: Supplied 'The Kleinmond SAPS have been extremely proactive and supportive, but at this stage we are not aware of any solid leads,' de Beer said. Efforts to recover the artworks began immediately. 'We immediately posted details and photographs of the stolen works on social media, which have been shared widely. Our network of collectors, reputable auction houses, and fellow galleries has also been alerted, and we are grateful for the solidarity and support. Because of the distinctiveness of these works, it will be challenging for the thieves to sell them without someone recognising them. 'We are asking members of the public, collectors, and galleries to remain vigilant and report any attempt to resell or transport sculptures that match these descriptions. There is no reward currently on offer, but our focus is on mobilising the art community and the public to help recover the pieces.' In total 7 sculptures were stolen Image: Supplied De Beer said the incident has been deeply felt by all involved. 'The impact is both financial and deeply personal. For the artists, these sculptures represent months of creative effort, skill, and inspiration, and their theft is profoundly discouraging. For us as a gallery, our sculpture garden is something we are proud of. It brings joy to our community and to visitors, and we have always believed that showcasing art outdoors was worth the inherent risks. Until now, we never felt this kind of targeted theft was a likely threat. 'While the incident is disheartening, it will not stop us from doing what we love. We have already strengthened our security measures and remain committed to making art accessible to the public.' He urged the public to act swiftly if they encounter any of the stolen works. 'Please contact Kleinmond SAPS immediately, or get in touch directly with FOMO Fine Arts. Quick action is vital in recovering these works and holding those responsible to account.' Weekend Argus
