Pastor, associate held: NHRC asks Ghaziabad DM to probe aide, says he availed SC benefits despite converting to Christianity

Indian Express28-06-2025
Days after the police acted on a complaint by a Bajrang Dal member and arrested a pastor and his associate for allegedly converting members of the Scheduled Caste (SC) to Christianity, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice directing the Ghaziabad district magistrate to conduct a thorough inquiry into the allegations against the associate, Premchand Jatav, and his family.
'The complainants alleged that Shri Premchand and his family, who were recently arrested by the Ghaziabad Police under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021, have continued to hold Scheduled Caste (SC) status and avail SC-specific government benefits despite having converted to Christianity,' read the notice issued on Thursday.
The two accused, Pastor Vinod Kunjumon (50) and Premchand Jatav (66), were arrested on June 15 following a complaint by a Bajrang Dal member, Prabal Gupta.
The NHRC bench, presided by Priyank Kanoongo, taking cognizance of the matter under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, directed the district magistrate to submit an action taken report within 15 days.
'The allegations made in the complaint prima facie seem to be serious violations of the human rights of the victim,' read the notice.
It added, 'The complainants requested the NHRC to launch an inquiry, revoke fraudulent SC certificates in the case, and conduct a broader audit of similar instances…'
When contacted, Ghaziabad District Magistrate Deepak Meena said the matter will be investigated. 'We have 15 days to submit a report. We will soon set up an inquiry into the matter,' he added.

Tensions flare in Indore after temple statues vandalised & thrown into Kanh river

Indore: Tensions prevailed near Sanjay Bridge in Indore after statues from a temple on the banks of the Kanh river were found uprooted and thrown into the water. The incident came to light on Saturday morning when locals arrived at the temple and found the statues missing. Upon learning of the incident, Bajrang Dal activists and locals began a search in the river, where they managed to retrieve some of the vandalised statues. The recovered statues were washed and cleaned by the community members. Following the discovery, the activists proceeded to Kotwali police station to demand that an FIR be registered. The protesters' anger was fuelled by the fact that this was not the first time the temple was targeted. Just a day earlier, on Friday, a similar incident occurred at a Lord Shiva temple on the banks of the river, where cattle remains were allegedly found. Kotwali station house officer Ravindra Parashar assured the protesters that the culprits would be apprehended within a week. The police have taken an application regarding the statues being thrown into the river and have launched an investigation. The repeated incidents of vandalism at the temple have left the local community deeply angered, demanding immediate action from the authorities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "We have registered a case under section 299 (which deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) and 331 (1) of BNS (lurking house-trespass or house-breaking). Varanasi: A Dalit girl NEET aspirant from Jaunpur district, staying at a private hostel in Durgakund area under Bhelupur police station, was sexually harassed allegedly by the hostel owner. According to reports, he also attempted to target her roommate on Saturday. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Bhelupur Gaurav Kaumar said that on receiving complaint from the girl's father, Bhelupur police lodged FIR against the accused hostel owner under sections of BNS, Pocso and SC/ST Act. An investigation into the matter had begun and proper action would be taken based on its outcomes, he added. On Friday, he alleged, the hostel owner harassed her classmate too, who somehow pushed him away and ran to her room, locking herself inside. Failing to target her, the hostel owner started harassing his daughter.
