Australian Wastewater Analysis Shows Record Highs In Ice, Cocaine Use
The latest wastewater report by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) revealed that 22.2 tonnes of methylamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and MDMA (commonly known as ecstasy) were consumed from August 2023 to August 2024.
This represented a 34 per cent increase from the previous year, driven by increases in consumption of methylamphetamine, also known as ice or meth, with 12.8 tonnes. That amount was a 21 per cent year-on-year increase and the highest level ever recorded by the programme, which started in 2016.

Cocaine and heroin use also saw record highs, with the former jumping up 69 per cent year-on-year to 6.8 tonnes, and heroin 14 per cent to 1.1 tonnes. MDMA use was up 49 per cent to 1.4 tonnes.
The estimated street value of the four drugs dropped from A$$12.4 billion (US$8.06 billion) in 2022-23 to A$$11.5 billion in 2023-24.
According to the ACIC, the increase in consumption of these illicit drugs in part is a reflection of their recovery following a slowdown during the Covid-19 pandemic.
"This is the first time over the life of the Programme that 3 drugs have been consumed at record high levels simultaneously and illustrates the long term resilience of these markets and their ability to recover from significant decreases in consumption caused by the COVID pandemic movement restrictions and hard border closures," said ACIC boss Heather Cook.
"ACIC data modelling suggests that the increases in drug consumption for methylamphetamine, cocaine and MDMA are likely to continue to 2027, though most likely not at the same rate observed during the year ended August 2024," Cook added.
The data covers 14.5 million Australians - about 57 per cent of the population - and is based on wastewater samples collected from across the country in August and October. The report tracks drug consumption for 12 substances, both licit and illicit.

SBC Medical Posts US$43 Mln Q2 Revenue, Net Income Falls 87 Pct
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- SBC Medical Group Holdings Inc (SBC Medical) reported second-quarter (Q2) revenue of US$43 million, an 18 per cent year-over-year (YoY) decline, as the company continues to realign its business around higher-margin services and scalable growth. (US$1=RM4.21) The revenue contraction was primarily attributed to the discontinuation of SBC Medical's staffing services, as well as targeted divestitures and a revised franchise fee structure introduced in April this year, according to a statement. Meanwhile, its net income fell 87 per cent to US$2.5 million, with earnings per share dropping to US$0.02, compared to US$0.20 in the same period last year. Operating income for the quarter was US$15 million, down 47 per cent YoY. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) also declined significantly by 46 per cent to US$15 million, with the EBITDA margin narrowing from 53 per cent to 35 per cent. Its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Yoshiyuki Aikawa said Q2 reflects the deliberate execution of its strategic roadmap, adding that the company has also signalled interest in further optimising its business model amid challenges in Japan's consumer discretionary sector, including trade restrictions and cautious spending. He noted that while revenue temporarily declined, the company is scaling its franchise network, exiting non-core operations, and shifting toward higher-margin services that will drive long-term value. Despite these financial setbacks, the company expanded its franchise network to 259 clinics, and the number of customers served in the past 12 months rose 14 per cent to 6.31 million. The company also maintained a high 72 per cent repeat visit rate. The company recently added JUN CLINIC to its network and acquired MB Career Lounge, aiming to enhance support services for its franchise partners. Headquartered in Irvine, California, and Tokyo, Japan, SBC Medical owns and provides management services and products to cosmetic treatment centres, primarily focused on providing comprehensive management services to franchise clinics.

Interim measures curb medical costs and insurance inflation in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Interim measures to manage rising medical costs remain effective, as ongoing initiatives will strengthen healthcare delivery and help curb medical insurance inflation, said Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour. He said that over the past three years, the government has implemented five key thrusts and 11 recommendations aimed at improving medical services, enhancing implementation, and addressing the rising cost of health insurance premiums. 'For example, we are revamping the medical and health insurance/takaful (MHIT) product. You may be able to see the base product. We are testing it as we go,' he told a press conference after announcing Malaysia's second-quarter 2025 (2Q 2025) gross domestic product (GDP) performance here today. The MHIT revamp involves a redesigned base product, to be completed by year-end and rolled out in selected areas next year. Abdul Rasheed said other initiatives involve strengthening the digital health system, expanding cost-effective healthcare options, leveraging primary care providers to reduce implementation costs, and transforming the primary care payment mechanism through digital tools. 'These efforts are expected to bring down payment costs and ensure a more sustainable healthcare system,' he added. Last December, BNM announced interim measures with the insurance and takaful industry to help policyholders facing premium revisions for their MHIT products, aimed at easing their immediate financial burden while preserving coverage. - Bernama
